.

“Morning.” I mumbled my voice still husky from sleep.

He glanced at me, just briefly and smiled, well almost smiled. “Morning Ive got a full day. Meeting, calls , more meetings.”

I sat up, hugging the sheets to my chest. “I was thinking..maybe I could go outside today? Just a walk. By myself.”

His brows lifted like I’d just suggested robbing a bank. “No.”

“Jake.”

“No,” he repeated, this time softer but still firm. “Not alone.”

I huffed, looking away. “Im not a child. I can handle myself.”

“Im not worried about you being a child,”he said picking up his watch and fastening it.

“Im worried about ..other people. This only works if it’s

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE MIDNIGHT TENSION

The gala ended in a blur of glitter, champagne, and fake smiles. But David’s words clung to me long after the music faded. Quinn. Ask Jake. They echoed in my head like smoke I couldn’t clear away. Even as we left the ballroom, even as cameras stopped flashing, even as Jake’s hand slipped from mine once we were inside his sleek black car the words followed me.The ride home was silent. Jake scrolled through his phone with the same cold focus he always carried, while I stared out the tinted window. The city lights blurred into golden streaks, but my thoughts stayed sharp, circling the same fear over and over.I wanted to ask. I wanted to turn, demand the truth about what David had said. But something inside me hesitated. Asking might shatter the fragile, careful thread tying Jake and me together. When we reached the penthouse, Jake stepped out first. He didn’t wait for me. Inside, he shrugged off his jacket, loosened his tie, and walked straight into his study without a single word.I

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE REMEMBERING WEEK

The remembering week was held annually. It was like a gala. And gala was not just a party it was the event of the year. For weeks, the city’s society pages whispered about it, speculating on the guest list, the fashion, the deals that would be struck in corners of the glittering ballroom. Invitations were rare, almost sacred. Politicians, foreign leaders, and the richest of the rich fought for a chance to attend pretending they care about Arthur Wolfe and what he did , but they didn’t. It was an excuse for them to show off and network for their businesses. Everyone loved it,except me.For me, it was another test. Another stage where I had to play the part of Chloe Mackenzie, Jake Wolfe’s perfect fiancée. Rosa had prepared everything for me hours before. The gown she laid out shimmered like midnight sky, a deep-blue silk that clung to me as if it had been sewn onto my body. The neckline dipped low, daring yet elegant, transforming me from a waitress into someone who belonged in Jake’s

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    A LOCKED DRAWER

The mansion felt alive at night. It didn’t just stand in silence it breathed, like some giant creature whose heart beat behind the walls. Sometimes, when I lay awake, I swore I could hear it. A creak in the corridor, a faint sigh from the wooden beams, the whisper of the wind pressing against the glass.Sleep never came easy to me in this house. Too many shadows, too many thoughts that circled my mind without rest. That night was no different. I tossed and turned until the sheets tangled around my legs, until frustration pulled me from the bed. Wrapping myself in a robe, I stepped into the hallway. My bare feet made no sound on the polished floor.Jake’s study sat at the far end of the corridor. Usually, the heavy oak door was closed, but tonight a thin strip of golden light spilled out, cutting into the darkness. I paused, my breath catching. He wasn’t supposed to be here ,he’d texted earlier about a late meeting, one that would “drag on.” Which meant the house, for now, was mine al

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE CAUTION

The café smelled like burnt espresso and cinnamon scones, a world away from the sterile, marble perfection of the Wolfe mansion. It was a welcome shock of the familiar. I hadn’t been here in weeks, and the ordinary noise the hiss of the milk steamer, the clatter of ceramic mugs, the low hum of conversation, and the tap-tap-tapping of college students hunched over their laptops was almost a comfort. It was the background noise of a normal life, a life that suddenly felt a thousand miles away.Pamella slid into the booth across from me, her eyes sharp and searching, not bothering with a hello. Her gaze swept over me, missing nothing. “You look exhausted,” she said. It wasn’t a question.I laughed weakly, the sound hollow even to my own ears, wrapping my fingers around the paper cup. The warmth was a small comfort. “That’s one way of putting it.”“You look gorgeous but there’s sadness in your eyes ,” she continued, leaning back with her arms crossed, her expression a mixture of concern

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE WHISPERS

When it was the time of the year, the whole family, the Wolfe family, moved to their parental house to remember their deceased father. Jake asked me to go with him but it was beyond a question. It was a must and by not making everyone question about my absence as à fiancee i had to be there for Jake. I wasn’t comfortable with being in the same house with them but i had to do it.The Wolfe mansion was never truly quiet. Even in the stillness of morning, the place hummed with life maids passing through the hallways, the faint clink of silver trays being carried to the kitchen, the distant growl of Jake’s favorite car warming up in the garage. Yet beneath all that order, I often felt the weight of silence pressing down on me, thick and watchful, as though the walls themselves carried secrets they weren’t ready to share.I rolled over in bed, the silk sheets cool against my skin. Jake had left early, before dawn. His absence had become a rhythm of its own the soft rustle of cufflinks, th
