Lia’s mind raced even as the lock clicked. How had she gotten here? Just hours ago she had been crying in her parents’ arms at the Laurent mansion, feeling the sting of Victor’s anger. Now she was trapped in a shady bar with two strangers who clearly had other plans. She thought back to the text messages. The promise of proof against Serena had seemed like the perfect solution. If only she could show Adrian and Victor real evidence, they would have to believe her. Adrian would see her loyalty.

  • THE BRIDE HE NEVER WANTED   Chapter 139- THE PRICE OF PRIDE

Nathan remained where he was long after Serena walked out of his office. The door had already closed. Her footsteps had faded. Yet his eyes stayed fixed on that same spot. The room was quiet. He slowly let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. Then he walked back to his desk and lowered himself into his chair. For a moment, he simply stared at the papers in front of him. He couldn’t read a single word. His mind was somewhere else. With her. He leaned back and closed his eyes. Every part of their conversation replayed in his head. Every pause. Every look. Every word. A faint smile crossed his lips before fading again. “Did I go too far?” he whispered. His fingers tapped lightly on the armrest. He remembered telling Serena that he wanted to marry her. He remembered promising that Lila and Elias would never feel like someone else’s children. He had meant every word. Not once had he lied. But maybe it had been too much all at once. He rubbed his forehead. “I probably s

His fingers stayed near my face a second longer than they should have. The soft brush of his hand against my cheek sent a strange warmth through me. I should have moved. I didn’t. Nathan’s eyes searched mine. “Serena…” His voice was low, careful. He stepped closer. Not rushed. Not pushy. Just close enough that I could feel the heat from his body. His hand slid slowly from my hair to the side of my neck. Gentle. Almost respectful. I finally found my voice. “Nathan, don’t.” He paused, but he didn’t pull away completely. “I’m not trying to force anything.” “Then stop.” He let out a quiet breath. “I just… I can’t keep pretending this doesn’t matter to me.” I shook my head and took one step back. The space between us felt necessary. “I’m not sure anymore.” His brows pulled together slightly. “Not sure about what?” “About any of this. About you. About me. About what we’re doing.” Nathan stayed still for a moment. Then he spoke again, slower this time. “I’ve never said this out

I arrived at Hale Corporation. Nathan welcomes me personally instead of sending an assistant. I noticed he seems happier than usual. Nathan led me into the conference room. Around ten people were already seated at the long table. Most of them were members of Hale Corporation’s investment board. A large screen displayed several charts, financial reports, and market trends. The moment we walked in, everyone stood. “Good morning, Ms. Voss.” I smiled politely. “Good morning.” Nathan gestured toward the empty seat beside him. “Please.” I took my seat. Nathan looked around the room. “Thank you all for coming. As you know, we’re reviewing our final decision on the Kellington Energy Stock. Before we vote, I’d like Ms. Voss here to share her thoughts.” Every eye turned toward me. One of the directors smiled. “We’ve heard a lot about your market predictions on the merger contract.” Another nodded. “We’re looking forward to hearing your opinion on the Killington stock.” I went through

The school playground slowly became quiet again. The children were still gathered around Adrian, but the teachers finally recovered from their surprise. The teacher who had stopped him earlier walked over with an embarrassed smile. “I’m… sorry, Mr…” She paused, realizing she didn’t even know his name. Adrian smiled gently. “Adrian.” “I’m sorry, Mr. Adrian. We didn’t know.” He shook his head. “You don’t have to apologize. You were only doing your job. If someone who's not registered came looking for my children, I’d expect the school to stop them too.” The teacher let out a relieved smile. “Thank you for understanding.” Adrian nodded. “I appreciate that you’re protecting them.” The tension between them disappeared. Nearby, Lila still refused to let go of his hand. “Daddy, come and see my classroom!” Elias quickly grabbed Adrian’s other hand. “And my drawings!” Adrian laughed softly. “One at a time.” The twins looked at each other before bursting into giggles. A few of their clas

The alarm rang earlier than usual. I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling for a few seconds before sitting up slowly. For one brief moment, everything felt normal. Then I remembered. The adoption papers. The envelope. The questions that had kept me awake almost the entire night.I closed my eyes again and rubbed my forehead. “I’ll deal with it later,” I whispered to myself. Right now… I had two children to take care of and a company waiting for me. Nothing else could come first. I'll look more into St. Mary's children's home later.I freshened up, changed into a cream-colored pantsuit, tied my hair neatly, and walked downstairs. The smell of breakfast welcomed me before I reached the dining room. Emma was already arranging plates on the table while Clara helped Lila and Elias with their school bags. The twins looked up the moment they saw me. “Mommy!” They ran over together. I smiled and bent down just in time to catch them. “Good morning.” “Morning!” they answered together.Lil

Both phones rang at the same time. I stood in the middle of my living room, keys still in my hand, staring at the two screens lighting up on the table. One showed Adrian’s name. The other showed Nathan’s. My heart jumped. I didn’t move at first. The sound filled my study. Lila and Elias were already asleep. The night felt heavy after what I just found out. I reached for Nathan’s phone. I had left him at the bar without a real answer. It felt wrong to ignore him now. I answered. “Serena?” Nathan’s voice came through soft, careful. “Did you get home safely?” “Yeah. I’m home.” He let out a short breath. “Good. Look… about earlier. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked you to stay the night like that. I don’t want to push you.” I sat on the edge of the couch. “It’s fine.” There was a pause. Then his voice dropped lower. “Serena… I…I want us to stop acting like friends.” The words hit me hard. I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. “Wha—” Before I could say anything, my other

The days before the wedding passed like a blur I couldn’t escape. People moved in and out of the house carrying fabrics, jewelry, flowers, and invitations while I stood in the middle of it all feeling completely detached. Measurements were taken and dresses were fitted. Every room was filled with

“There’s a family willing to help us,” my mother explained quickly. “Very powerful. Very wealthy. But they have conditions.”My stomach tightened. “What kind of conditions?” I asked. My sister let out a soft, shaky breath. “They want their son to be married so that they can get a grandchild out of

That night, I sat alone in the vast bedroom that wasn’t mine, wearing a white light robe they had given me after the wedding with no panties under. My hands were clenched so tightly in my lap that my nails left little crescent marks on my palms. I felt nervous. The door opened. He stepped in, jacke

I spent the morning trying to make myself useful. Anything to feel less like a shadow in this house. One of the younger maids was struggling with heavy flower vases in the main hall, so I stepped in to help carry one. Her eyes widened in surprise, but she gave me a small, grateful smile. We were ha
