"Wake up, you lazy sow!"

Kyla jolted awake as a bucket of icy water crashed over her face. It stung her nose and flooded down her throat, making her choke and cough violently.

She blinked through tears to see her mother-in-law towering over her like a vulture.

"Mistress Tabitha," Kyla rasped, shivering. "Wh-what are you doing here so early?"

“It’s 5 PM.” Tabitha let out a scornful laugh. "Plus, what a brainless question. Do I need permission to step into my own son's house? Or were you hoping to laze around all day and keep him away from his duties, you shameless leech?" Her lip curled in disgust. "Get up! You're a disgrace. Honestly, you're even uglier when you wake! How he can stand to look at you, I'll never know."

Kyla scrambled out of bed, her movements awkward and careful, but she kept her head ducked. She couldn't believe she had slept the day away.

"Stand up straight!" Tabitha barked. "Don't slouch like some mangy mutt. I want to see exactly what my son has been saddled with.

The driver pulled up to Kyla's father's estate, the wheels crunched over the gravel driveway causing her to have an even more painful headache. Albert had moved to a bigger house after he retired as beta. Something she knew was Claudia's idea. The rain had slowed to a drizzle, but the clouds still hung low and grey, mirroring the feeling in Kyla's chest. She sat stiffly in the backseat with her arms folded tightly over her belly. She was still trembling from the ride and from Tormund's relentless presence beside her.His cold eyes never left her, even as the chauffeur cut the engine. "Wake up and stop your daydreaming," he ordered sharply. "You will walk in there like you own nothing. Don't even think about pretending you're dignified."Kyla swallowed, her throat dry. She had tried to straighten her dress and smooth her hair, but the fabric refused to cooperate, and her eyes were red from tears. She glanced at Tormund, searching for something warm, but all she found was hatred and d

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   9: The Wolf’s Mother’s Bone

For the first year of their marriage, Tormund treated Kyla with coldness. He avoided her bed. He did not want her to bear his child. But after a while, his mother told him the pack needed an heir. So he had to turn to alcohol to give him the strength he needed to bed such a wicked and ugly woman. She had a nice body...he even thought it was nicer than Vivica's, but he couldn't get himself to look into her face.Last month, drunk and confused, he had mistaken her for Vivica. He slept with her when he walked in on her taking a shower. He had never been that horny before, and even though he whispered Vivica's name he was only thinking about Kyla in that moment, how good she smelt and how good her muscles felt around his girth. She was so tight, but the moment she whispered that she loved him he had to do something to shatter her, so he whispered Vivica's name out of spite. The next morning, shame burned through him. He thought Kyla had tricked him again. She must have been using her magi

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   8: The Truth About Vivica

Kyla froze, her lips parting in silence. Tears spilled down her cheeks. She shook her head, thinking how foolish she was believing that Tormund could ever have pity on her. This was the ugly truth. He hadn't sought the treasure for her... or anybody else. It was for Vivica. Everything was always about Vivica. Her chest heaved with silent sobs. She pressed a hand to her stomach protectively, as if shielding the tiny spark of life inside from Tormund's cruel words. She wanted him to hurt as much as she was hurting. For two years now she had known the truth. The wicked truth that Vivica wasn't dead at all.The memory struck her like a shadow creeping out from the past. Two years ago, during one of Vivica's memorial rites, Kyla sat alone by the cliff where Vivica had supposedly committed suicide. She cried quietly, her tears dripping onto the folded paper offerings she meant to cast into the wind over the cliffs for her stepsister, when Gemma spoke inside her mind.'You know Vivica's not

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   7: Dr. Mendez

"Please... I can't breathe... I'm in pain."Tormund looked at Kyla with disgust. "You're always so dramatic and desperate for my attention," he hissed, watching Kyla squirm on the ground as she gasped for breath. She weakly tried to pry his fingers from her neck, but he was too strong. "Pathetic!" He spat. His phone rang and he released her instantly. He clicked the screen and answered. "Alpha Tormund here. What do you have for me?"He listened, then spoke briskly. "What? Are you sure the Wolf Mother's Bone has been found? I'll be there right away."He pulled on his coat and moved toward the door."You can keep up the act a little longer, but soon, I'll have no use for you anymore," he mocked before leaving her on the floor.Moments later, the maid found Kyla unconscious and rushed her to the hospital. When Kyla woke, she was lying on a hospital bed. The bright lights burned her eyes, and her body felt like it had been drained of every ounce of strength. A woman's gentle voice reache

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   6: Where Is My Dinner?

The needle pricked Kyla's skin, and her blood flowed away, weakening her with every drop. Her vision blurred, her fingers trembled, and the room spun around her. She pressed her lips together to stop them from quivering. After the doctor drew the necessary blood, Kyla tried to stand, but her knees buckled. She swayed, clutching the bedpost."Luna!" Dr. Brando snapped. "You must take it easy now.""I know, but I need to see my husband.""You will soon. Just lay down for a bit. I'll go take the blood to the nurse for testing before the transfusion, and then I'll come back to give you a little check-up. In the meantime, please suck on this lollipop." He handed her the sweet."Thank you, doctor," she said weakly as she lay back down. The moment the door closed, the air shifted. Jason and Leroy slipped in, grinning."Our Luna is so devoted to Alpha Tormund," Jason said, almost mockingly. "You've taken care of him with such loyalty."Kyla managed a gentle smile. "He is my husband. I would d
