KYLA’S POV

"The marriage will be held in four days, on Vivica's eighteenth birthday!"

"My Luna, are you serious?" Vivica squealed.

"Yes, my dear. At the rate you two are going, I know I'll be a grandmother soon, so why wait and risk you getting pregnant out of wedlock?"

Cheers erupted and Vivica glowed like a star while Tormund grinned like a king.

"I can't wait for you to become Mrs. Moonveil," Tormund purred as he kissed her knuckles.

The Alpha called for more wine. I hurried forward with the decanter, but my eyes were focused on Tormund. My gaze slid downward, catching what no one else seemed to notice.

His hand was hidden under the table, between Vivica's thighs. His fingers moved, and Vivica's blush deepened.

The scent hit me, and I could tell my father and the Alpha smelt it too, but they didn't mention it.

I swallowed hard. My hand trembled, and the wine spilled across the Alpha's lap.

"What the hell!" the Alpha growled. "You clumsy girl!"

The room went deathly silent.

"You stupid girl!" Claudia's voice shattered the silence. She leapt from her seat and struck me hard across the face, then she yanked the decanter from my grip. "Why can't you do anything right?"

"You ugly bitch! You've ruined my engagement dinner!" Vivica cried.

"This is a Danny Wolfe original," the Luna said. "This is coming out of your wages."

"But..." I began to protest.

"You dare back answer your Luna?" Tormund roared.

"I'm sorry." I lowered my head.

"Out of my sight, you useless burnt face monster!" Claudia barked as she slapped me again.

My cheek burned, but the ache in my chest was worse. I lifted my eyes just once, hoping, begging for my father's gaze. For him to look at me with the love he used to have.

But he didn't.

I wondered why, since the dinner began, my father had not looked at me.

"Father?" I whispered.

"Go clean the gutters!" he barked, still cutting into his steak. "You're not needed here anymore."

I bowed my head. "Yes, Father."

"Apologize to the Alpha and Luna and then get out of our sight," Claudia hissed.

"Please forgive me, Alpha. Luna." I bowed, my pride bleeding out of me like water from a cracked cup. With tears in my eyes, I fled from the scene.

******

The next morning, my wolf, Gemma, woke me before dawn.

‘Wake up, Kyla.’ Her sweet voice rang inside my head.

My wolf had always been with me since I was thirteen, but Gemma rarely spoke. And ever since the fire, she had never shown herself around people. She didn't trust anyone... not a soul. Only me and Wynona.

‘What is it, Gemma?’

‘I heard suspicious footsteps... followed by a window opening.’

I groaned and rubbed my eyes. I checked the time on my clock. It was 2 a.m., just three days before Vivica's eighteenth birthday and wedding of the century.

‘It's not even light out. I'm going back to sleep.’

But Gemma forced me upright, jerking my body until I had no choice but to move with her.

‘We are going downstairs to see what this is about.’

"Ahh," I scoffed aloud.

I tiptoed down the stairs, my bed slippers dragging over the wooden floor as I stifled a yawn with my palm. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until I saw the curtain to the living room window fluttering. It was my job to close up at night, and I was positive I had closed this window before going upstairs to bed.

"What the hell?" I mumbled as I went to close the window.

My eyes darted to the tree line just in time to see Vivica in her nightgown running into the woods.

‘See, Gemma? It's only Vivica sneaking out to go meet with her fiancé again,’ I hissed bitterly.

Vivica had been sneaking out every night for the last week after she went to that party across town at another pack.

‘Hmm,’ my wolf hummed. ‘Something still feels off to me.’

‘Gemma, please forgive me. But I'm too tired to be having this conversation now. Can we talk about this tomorrow?’

‘Fine,’ she growled.

I dragged myself back upstairs, collapsed into bed, and fell asleep.

******

Around 8 a.m., the battle horns were being blown. I shot from my sleep only to see that my house was in chaos.

"What's happening?" I asked the first servant I saw when I opened my room door.

"Didn't you hear? The Alpha's son is hurt."

"Hurt?" I gulped. Then I ran downstairs to see my stepmother sitting on my father's lap, crying.

"Father," I bowed, my voice trembling. "What happened to Tormund? And where is Vivica?"

His face darkened, and Claudia began to snarl.

"Get away from us, you ugly bitch. This is your fault. This is all your fault."

I staggered back. "What did I do?"

"You're the reason she's gone! You threatened her! Told her she wasn't Albert's real daughter. You pushed her to this. She couldn't take it anymore, so she said she was going to kill herself!" Claudia's finger stabbed the air at me.

"No! I never—"

"She left a suicide note," my father’s voice was steel. "Now just leave. I don't want to see your face right now."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was madness. The servants began to whisper about me. Vivica's wedding to the future Alpha was supposed to be the event of the decade. Everyone was looking forward to it.

Soon there was a loud bang, and the front door was kicked off the hinges as Alpha Morgan stormed in.

"WHERE IS SHE? Where is that filthy daughter of yours?"

I gulped as I stood planted to the floor.

"Alpha! Please... calm down," my father said. He pushed his wife off his lap and walked in front of me protectively.

The Alpha's wicked gaze landed on me. "I am going to kill you and then let my wolf eat you down to the bone."

I gulped. "What did I do to deserve this, Alpha?"

"What did you do? What did you do?" The Alpha chuckled darkly.

Just then, the Luna stumbled inside, pale and broken. Her knees buckled, but Alpha Morgan caught her before she could fall to the floor.

"Luna Tabitha! What happened?" my father demanded.

"It's... Tormund." Her lips quivered.

Alpha Morgan hugged her tightly.

"What happened to the future Alpha?" Claudia asked.

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   173: Team Kyla

KYLA'S POVThe peace of the mountain was shattered by a sound that made my hair stand on end. Before I could even reach for the silver light in my palms, a pack of rogue wolves burst from the underbrush. These weren't the noble shifters of the Peak; they were mangy, wild-eyed, and foaming at the mouth, driven mad by the lingering scent of being wild and untamed. "Get back!" Lowell roared, his voice already vibrating with the gravelly timbre of the beast. He moved like a blur of lethal muscle, meeting the lead wolf mid-air and snapping its neck with a sickening crunch. Beside him, Cyrus was a whirlwind of steel and red hair, his daggers flashing in the moonlight as he carved through the rogues with a terrifying, graceful efficiency. Even Derick joined in, his massive broadsword swinging in arcs that sent fur and dark blood flying into the dirt. The fight was fast, brutal, and over as quickly as it had started. I stood in the center, ready to do my thing, but the brothers hadn't left a

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   172: Team Lowell

KYLA'S POV"I hate this, Kyla," he whispered, sitting down on the dirt a safe distance away. "I hate that I'm a weapon against you.”"It's not your fault, Cyrus," I said, clutching the blanket tighter. "It's the bond. It's the mountain. It's... everything.""Is it?" He tilted his head, the firelight dancing in his red hair. "Or is it just that Lowell and I are two halves of a whole that were never meant to be split? Derick was right. We nearly broke the world once because we couldn't share. And here we are, doing it again."Again? I wondered, but I was in too much pain to press the matter. "You're not sharing a toy, Cyrus. You're talking about a woman," I reminded him, my voice gaining a bit of its old bite.He smiled, that lopsided, heart-melting grin that usually preceded some kind of trouble. "I know that. Believe me, I know. You're the Wolf Mother. You're the one who survived the fire and the frost. You're... you're everything I didn't know I was looking for in those ten years of

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   171: The Dual Bond

KYLA'S POVThe moment came where we had to travel to Cyrus's stronghold. I kept feeling this pain inside me that I couldn't cipher. It started as a dull throb in my chest, right where the silver scars met my collarbone, but as the hours ticked by, the sensation began to split. It was like a tug-of-war was happening in my very soul. To my right, Lowell walked with a steady, heavy grace, his presence a constant hum of earth and deep forest. To my left, Cyrus moved like a shadow, his energy sharp and electric. And I was the rope they were pulling on."You're limping," Cyrus said, suddenly appearing at my side. He didn't touch me, but I could feel the heat radiating off him. "Or at least, you're walking like your boots are made of lead. Do you need a break?""I'm fine, Cyrus," I snapped, though the words felt like they were coated in sandpaper. "It's just the incline.""The incline is barely a five-degree slope, Kyla," Lowell rumbled from my other side. He stopped walking, forcing the re

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   170: You Blew It

LOWELL'S POVThe morning sun was doing its best to be cheerful, but my head felt like a pack of rogue silver-claws was using my brain for target practice. Shifting back into my human skin always left me feeling raw, but doing it after a night of war and whatever psychological warfare the lagoon games had provided was a new level of exhaustion.I leaned against a sturdy oak, watching the camp come to life. Beside me, Cyrus was picking dirt out from under his fingernails with a stray dagger, looking far too relaxed for a man who had been exiled for a decade. Derick was pacing nearby, his eyes drifting—not for the first time toward the medical tents where Sofia was currently fussing over a very hungover Charles."You blew it, Dee," Cyrus said, not even looking up from his task. His voice had that annoying, singsong quality he used whenever he was about to poke a bruise. "Seriously. You're staring so hard I'm surprised her clothes hasn't caught fire. So stop looking at her like that."Der

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   169: History Repeating

KYLA'S POV"You are not a freak, Kyla. You are a catalyst," Wynona said, her voice dropping to a low. "But this situation with Lowell and Cyrus is more dangerous than you realize. They are twins, two halves of the same royal coin, and the mountain is reacting to the instability of your choice. You are the anchor, but if you don't choose, the anchor will drag everyone down into the depths.""How can I choose when I feel pulled in both directions?" I asked, my voice cracking with the weight of the confession. "Lowell is the man I met when I was lost, the one who made me feel seen for the first time. And Cyrus... Cyrus is the one who stayed when everything went to hell. He's the one who fought for me when I couldn't fight for myself."Wynona looked away, staring out at the golden ripples of the honey lake as if she could see through time itself. "It is a cruel position to be in, and I do not envy you the burden. But you must understand that the stakes are higher than your own happiness.

  • THE BURNT FACE LUNA   168: The Impossible

KYLA'S POVSofia's words kept replaying in my head. I needed to talk to Wynona. I found her sitting on a weathered stone bench near the edge of the ancient willow, her hair catching the early light like spun silk. She looked regal and timeless, yet there was a weariness in her eyes that hadn't been there when she first arrived to save us from the dark witches.I approached her slowly, my boots crunching softly on the grass, and she didn't even look up before she spoke. "I knew you would find me eventually, Kyla. You always did have a way of seeking out the truth when the world started to get too loud for you.""I have a lot of questions, Wynona," I said, my voice steadier than I felt as I sat down beside her. "And I think I deserve some straight answers for once."She finally turned to look at me, and her expression softened into something deeply maternal and pained. She reached out, covering my hand with her own, and her skin was surprisingly warm. "Before we dive into the mysteries
