The sun rose gently, golden light twining across the sanctuary like a soothing balm. Emereah stood beneath the tall arch of the observatory, Lunareth sleeping lightly against her chest. The baby's weight anchored her—but her eyes were elsewhere.

Down below, in the courtyard, Vladimir knelt in the dirt, sleeves rolled high, smudged face black with soot, the three children huddled round him. They were no longer afraid of him. Not quite. One reached out and pulled his hair.

Vladimir didn't jump back. Instead, he gave the smallest girl a carven fox and showed the oldest boy how to tie a sparring wrap.

A woman came to him—a widow of a baker, who had been quiet for so long since the Rebellion. She offered him a tray of warm flatbread. Emereah stiffened, his heart still.

But Vladimir accepted graciously with a nod of his head and offered the bread to the kids before dipping his own.

The woman said something to him that Emereah couldn't catch.

He responded with something.

She laughed.

From the cracks in the earth, a presence began to stir a slow, deliberate rise that shook the very ground beneath them. The air turned heavy, thick with a stench of rot and decay. The once-vibrant clearing where Emereah and Vladimir stood became suffused with a cold, unnatural fog, swirling around them like an insidious fog of death. The tendrils from the earth twisted and twined, thick as serpents, their blackness pulsing with a grotesque life of its own. They reached out, grasping at everything in their path—seeking, dragging, pulling. The land itself seemed to reject the daylight, suffocating it beneath the weight of the dark forces at play. And from the roiling mass, a figure slowly emerged, its form ghastly and grotesque. It was no longer a woman. No longer the semblance of flesh and bone, but something worse. The very earth around it had given birth to it an entity, a force, a being shaped from the hunger of time and the fury of the void.It towered over them, dark and bloated w

"Vladimir! Fight!" Emereah cried, stumbling towards him, her arms extended in supplication as the shadows writhed closer. But the night rolled in closer, curling around his arms, dragging him down to his knees. His breath was harsh and rasping, and the grunting of his fight was dulled by the thick press of the shadows."Emereah…" Vladimir's voice was harsh, crackling with fear and agony. "You must take Lunareth… Escape! You must.""Don't!" Emereah sobbed, her heart racing. "I won't go!" Her voice cracked on the final syllable, and she tried to stretch out a hand toward him, but the shadows knocked her back with such strength that she stumbled and fell, grabbing at the ground barely in time. The pressure of it forced the air from her lungs, but she was not going to retreat. She was not going to let him get away from her not now.She could feel the heat of Lunareth's existence increasing, feel the child power building with every cry. Lunareth's cries were a yelping scream, an animal sou

There was a slight tremble in Vera's voice, confusion in the tone of how she spoke. "I believed it's over since Morgane is no longer there? You said yourself she's done. You sensed it."Emereah didn't respond. Rather, she let her eyes roam across the black forest, fine as if tracing out something concealed just at the edge of light. Her own heartbeat throbbed within her, the pulse echoing in her ears, blended with the oppressive quiet surrounding them.I felt the same way, too," Emereah breathed, her voice far away, as if trying to reassure herself. "But this… this was never about her. Morgane was a symptom, not the disease.".The air around them was thickening. The quiet of the forest was weighing down on them, crushing, heavy with some malevolent evil. The shadows which had seemed to recede after Morgane's fall were spreading back in, creeping deeper, stretching further.Vera stood motionless, her gaze scanning frantically around them. "What are you saying? Emereah, we can't keep ru

"Is it over my lady?"vera asked."i think so it is over i can no longer feel morgane.".Emereah stood at the heart of the woods, her breathing still ragged, her body spent but unshakable. The fire encircling them, slowly dying, spat and snarled as if in response to what she was thinking. The weight of battle the terror, the disgust, the pain had been shed, but there was something else, something that hung in the air like a heavy fog."I think so," replied Emereah, her voice softer now, but firm. Her passion-filled eyes, which had previously shone so brightly, were now veiled by a mix of exhaustion and something deeper. Fear? Maybe. It was impossible to say. "I can no longer feel Morgane. The darkness has dissipated. I no longer feel her presence in the air."Vera, who was a pace or two behind her, crept forward tentatively, her face full of suspicion. She scanned the woods, but they were already falling back into stillness, their eerie quiet creeping back into the forest. The black sha

With that, Emereah's gaze frozen, her body coiling in wait for what was to come. The wind wailed its mournful melody through the trees, its ghostly cry a warning knell, and yet she did not move. At her side, Vladimir's white-knuckled clenched grip on his sword whitened, his eyes bulging with increasing comprehension of the storm that came. The air chilled, the trees themselves distorting as Morgane's hunger leaked out, a black corruption spreading down channels of land and tree.We have to move quickly," Emereah urged, her voice firm but with a catch of urgency. Her gaze pierced the darkened horizon. The trees lay like a hunter tracking its quarry, its once serene nature tainted by the malevolent presence of Morgane.Vladimir nodded wordlessly, his face black as coal. He felt it too—something evil was afoot, lurking just beyond the trees. The forest, once its sanctuary, had been a gestation ground for Morgane's malevolence, and the realization that such power turned against them made

The square was teeming with soldiers, mages, and civilians, waiting for the moment of the impending battle moment by moment. The air vibrated with tense emotions, soldiers' faces set in grim determination. Women and men stood back to back with frost on their faces, hardened as they managed to catch on to the scale of what they were about to experience. They had prepared for years for this day. But this… this was something else. The wind howled down the narrow corridors, thick with the scent of rain, smoke, and something darker. Something malevolent.Emereah felt it, deep in her marrow. The storm was no normal storm it was an evil, a portent of the ancient darkness awakening. The Keep walls groaned under the strain, as though the stone itself felt the disaster building."Emereah, you must stay here," Elder Kael said, moving forward with worry creasing his furrowed face. "The child—""She is not a child, Kael," Emereah cut through his words like a blade. "She is the fire. The only one w
