MasukViktor left me staring at the contract. My fingers were too frozen to flip past the first page.
What would ‘the’ Viktor Douglas want from a girl like me? A girl without anything tied to her name?
The conflicting thought lingered a while until I decided to steer to the brighter side. It was promising and clearly the only thing I could do at the moment. If anything, he didn't seem as cruel as the papers painted him. What's the worst that could happen?
But I knew better than judging a man's character by a few displays of respect in a single evening yet it didn’t seem like I had another choice now.
I decided I needed to hear a third voice, maybe to hear something convincing. So I dialed Naomi.
The moment my best friend's voice came through, my composure cracked.
Layla.. you're not calling to cry about that slimeball of a husband right?
Relax Naomi... it's not Julian. It's something else.
Better. So what now? Did Chloe fall down a flight of stairs?
That cracked me up real good. So good that I doubted if the laughter was from me. I didn't think I still had it.
No, it's the CEO of Glaz firm, Viktor Douglas. I said , making sure the last two words came out as slow as possible.
The devil-in-tuxedo Viktor Douglas? What about him?
Yes him. He proposed. I said, swallowing hard after saying it.
Naomi let out her usual dramatic laugh. "I pray for your sake that this man proposed a partnership or funeral service, if they actually propose that. Don't play with me Layla."
"It's a contract marriage Naomi. It's not even that serious. "
Okay. Now I can say that you've officially lost your mind. I've got no words for you.
At this point, I had to let Naomi rant so I kept quiet.
Layla.. She broke the brief silence. Listen to me, I've said it numerous times and I don't mind saying it once more. Marriage is bad news. Didn't I tell you don't say 'I do' to Julian? But you went ahead and built yourself the most miserable cell possible and now? You want to go all the way from prison to solitary confinement with the devil himself?
Naomi...
No, don't interrupt me! Are you cursed? Why would you want to sign yourself to another man after what just happened. You clearly don't need marriage. You need therapy!
I covered my face, torn in between tears and laughter. Naomi's outrage was ridiculously comforting.
Then I whispered slowly, thank you so much baby. Really , but I promise you, I'm taking the direct opposite of everything you advised.
Then the call went click!
Naomi hung up but I didn't know why I kept laughing.
Then a suffocating silence followed afterwards. Naomi has never been able to sway me in the past years, maybe that was why I called her, because I know she wasn't capable of changing my mind.
My phone buzzed. A single text popped up from Viktor , What do you sat?
Reality revisited once more. I stared at my glowing screen while making my final decision. I had nothing, no money, no job, no name or a roof that felt like home. Then u whispered into the empty room.
I'm doing this.
The following day, I walked into Viktor’s office ignoring all the stares from the hallway. Then I dropped the papers on his desk. I've signed it.
I watched his expression soften immediately like I just handed him a trophy. He opened the folder and scanned through it quickly then closed it and rose from his chair and took my hand.
My breath hitched when he raised it to his lips and pressed the most beautiful kiss I've ever felt. Then he said, "You'll thank me later."
I don't know why the confidence in those words scared me so much.
I had a mix feeling of salvation and damnation .
At least it was something. Something to pick me up from the floor Julian left me.
The relief lasted about two days before the tabloid explosion took over.
Headlines read: DISCARDED WIFE MARRIES RUTHLESS CEO.
FROM TRASH TO TREASURE.
I nearly dropped my coffee when I saw my face splashed across the newsstands.
Shortly after, at noon, Julian stormed I into Viktor’s office and fell on his knees.
Sir, I'm believing this was a mistake ,Demotion? To junior assistant after five years of work?
Viktor spared him no glance or response.
I stood at the corner watching with a bit of shock. I hadn't expected Viktor to go as far as humiliating him like that. In front of his colleagues, stripping him bare of his pride.
Julian's eyes caught mine. I could feel the bloodshot from a distance. His glare was venomous. One that didn't talk but said everything.
It stirred something in me. Fear.
I wondered if Viktor’s form of protection had just painted a target on my back.
Layla's POVA month passed by quietly after Caleb flew back to America. He still called sometimes, checking in on me with his usual calm. But every time , I kept my answers short. I wasn't trying to be cold, I was just confused. About how I was starting to feel... about him. That Sunday evening, the gold sun settles across the pool. I sat by the edge with a chilled glass of squeezed juice, my legs stretched out, my eyes were fixed on the slow moving water.Naomi wad was splashing loudly on the other side , laughing like she owned the world."You should come in, girl! The water is perfect and the baby would love it. " Naomi called out."I'm fine." I replied, swirling the juice lightly. "Just... watching.""Watching what? Watching as I live your life for you?" She teased and filled her hair back before diving under.I rolled my eyes but I was smiling. And then it hit.A sharp tearing pain stabbed through my lower waist.I gasped, loud, harsh and uncontrollably. The glass slipped f
Layla’s POVNaomi’s face was the first thing I saw when the car window slid down. Her hair was sticking in ten different directions, like she’d sprinted out of the house.“Jesus, Layla. What are you people doing here? A board meeting?” She demanded.Caleb’s hand dropped from the window control, and the second Naomi’s eye landed on my face, I saw the confusion hit her, her expression softened.“Why do you look like you cried?” She asked, stepping closer.I forced a small smile and opened the car door.“I’m fine,” I said quickly. “We just… talked.”Naomi narrowed her eyes at me like she didn’t buy that for a second, but Caleb stepped out at the same moment and gave her a polite nod.“I’ll head out now,” he said. “Ava, call me if anything changes.”I nodded. “Yeah. Just… let me know if anything else comes up.”Caleb held my gaze for a second, long enough for me to read whatever unspoken warning he was holding back, then he got into his car.The engine started, the tall-lights glowed and
Layla’s POVThe world came back to me in fragments.Cold air, Caleb’s voice somewhere far, my own breath shaking. And that photo, the face that ripped open the door in my head.I blinked hard, trying to steady the spinning inside my skull.Caleb sat completely still beside me, like he was scared one wrong move would shatter me again.“Layla,” he said quietly, “breathe, talk to me. What did you see?”I swallowed and my mouth was dry.“I… I know that face,” I whispered. His jaw tightened, but he didn’t interrupt.“It was fast at first,” I said, pressing my fingers to my forehead. “Just a flash. But then… it started forming. It started making sense.”Caleb waited, his eyes locked on mine. He wasn’t pushing, but he wasn’t letting me hide either.“It’s my uncle,” I finally said. His expression didn’t change. But I felt the shift in the air.“Stanley Backwood,” I added. “My dad’s brother.”Caleb’s eyes narrowed slightly, like that confirmed something he had already suspected.“I remember…”
Third person’s POVLayla barely had time to inhale before Caleb’s voice hit her ear like a cold splash.“ I'm in town.need to see.” No greetings whatsoever then he added, “I’m already driving to your house.”Layla closed her eyes, letting her head fall back. The exhaustion pressed into her like gravity.Of course he was already coming. Caleb always showed up five steps ahead, like he lived with a map of her life no one else had access to.Those were the angry thoughts in her head.“Caleb…”“Five minutes,” he cut in.The line ended.Layla exhaled and dropped her phone on the couch. The room still smelled of jasmine and new furniture, but she didn’t even get the chance to settle into it.Naomi’s head popped around the corner like a nosy sitcom neighbor.“Your face looks like you just found out rent has doubled. Oh wait, you don't pay rents…What happened?”Layla rubbed her eyelids. “Caleb wants to see me.”Naomi’s mouth dropped. “Now? As of now?”Layla nodded.Naomi flung her hands dram
Third person’s POVMilton drove with the calm focus of someone trying very hard not to get distracted by the chatter behind him. Drew sat in the passenger seat, stiff as a soldier, glancing back every few seconds to check on Layla.Naomi and Layla, however, were in their own world.Naomi leaned forward between the front seats. “Start talking, everything, I want the full gist. Every single thing I missed. All the drama, all the details, all the…”“Naomi,” Layla laughed weakly, resting her head on the seat. “Let me breathe first. I’ll tell you everything when we settle in.”“I have been gone for months, Layla. Months.” Naomi clutched her chest dramatically. “Do you know how many nights I cried? I cried so much that I think my tear glands relocated.”Milton choked on laughter but covered it with a cough.Layla glanced at him. “Let’s turn here.”Milton nodded and turned, while Naomi resumed her endless chatter.“You need to tell me everything girl, I’m serious. How is the baby? How is th
Third person’s POVCaleb stood by the wide glass window of his penthouse in Manhattan, the city light reflecting off his face like scattered sparks. His suitcase lay open on the bed behind him, half- packed. His jaw was set. His movements were sharp and controlled, the way a man moves when he’s fighting the urge to panic. He dialed his private investigator.“Sir,” the man answered almost immediately.“I’ll be out of America in a few days,” Caleb said, slipping a file into his suitcase. “But continue with everything we discussed, no delay. And I want reports sent to me the minute you uncover anything.”“Yes, sir.”“And listen…” Caleb paused for a moment, rubbing the back of his neck. “If anything is linked to Ava… I want to know immediately.”“Understood sir”Caleb dropped the call. His breath shuddered once, the only sign of the storm churning inside him. Then he scrolled through his phone… and dialed Naomi. The call rang twice.“Hello?” Naomi’s voice sounded confused. “Who…”“It’s C
