Laylas POV

"What do you want?"

The words left my mouth before I could stop them. The room was silent except for the faint hum of the phone on speaker and everyone was watching me.

The distorted voice on the other end didn't rush to answer. I'm sure he deliberately didn't answer immediately to stretch the silence.

"Cooperation," he said finally. "In seventy two hours, you have a psychiatric evaluation scheduled."

My fingers tightened around the phone. "And how did you know that? Is this Jasper?

Layla’s POVI quietly did the three blocks walk with my chest in my mouth. It turned out all the blocks from the place I was dropped belonged to Chen, and he was dreaded greatly around there.Marcus Chen’s office was inside a modern glass building on an eerily quiet street.I checked the time as I stepped inside, exactly on time. The receptionist greeted me politely before leading me upstairs.Marcus Chen was waiting inside a conference room when I entered, he stood up immediately. He was tall, probably in his early forties, with sharp eyes that seemed to scan every detail of the room in seconds.“Miss Layla,” he said calmly, extending a hand.“Yes.”His handshake was firm but professional.“Please,” he said, gesturing to the chair across from him. “Have a seat.”I sat down and took a steady breath.“I’ll get straight to the point,” I said.“That would be helpful.”I pulled out my phone and opened the photo of Caleb bound to a chair, bruised and injured.Marcus leaned forward slightly

Layla’s POVAt some point during the night, exhaustion finally forced me into sleep, but peace didn’t come with it at all. Then I had a dream that felt so real it was almost cruel. In the dream I was standing in a bright living room, sunlight poured through wide windows, everything looked warm and safe.Drey was in my arms, giggling as he tugged at my hair, across the room, Viktor stood by the couch watching us, he looked… relaxed and happy, a smile tugged at his lips as he walked toward us.“Careful,” he said softly. “He’s going to pull all your hair out.”I laughed. “Your son is the one doing the damage.”“My son?” Viktor raised a brow with a teasing grin.Drey clapped his tiny hands and squealed, the sound filled the room with warmth, for a moment, everything felt perfect, like we were a normal family, like none of the chaos existed, then the front door slammed open, the sound shattered the moment like glass.A figure stepped inside, my heart lurched, I couldn’t see the person’s f

Layla’s POVI rushed to the door and yanked it open, the hallway outside was quiet, and the waiter was gone.I hurried down the hall toward the elevator, my pulse pounding in my ears. The elevator doors slid open just as I reached them, it was empty.I stepped inside quickly and pressed the lobby button, glancing around like the man might magically appear beside me and there was nothing. When the doors opened again, I rushed out and checked the hallway leading to the stairwell, I pushed the heavy door open and leaned over the railing, looking down the winding stairs, it was totally silent.Whoever had delivered that message had disappeared completely.A cold feeling settled in my stomach, I headed straight for the reception desk. The young woman behind it looked up and gave a polite smile. “Good evening, ma’am, how can I help you?”“I’m looking for one of the waiters,” I said quickly, still catching my breath. “He just delivered room service to my room.”She frowned slightly. “Do you

Layla’s POVI ran back inside my room, and shot the door behind me, tears rolled down my eyes.Suddenly…The ringing of my phone dragged me out of the storm in my head, I quickly wiped my cheeks with the back of my hand, I had not even realized I was crying again, I glanced at the screen, it was Naomi, a video call.My chest tightened, we had only spoken a few times since I arrived, everything had been chaotic, I hadn’t even had time to sit down and breathe properly, let alone have a real conversation with my best friend or my child.I rushed to the bathroom, splashed cold water on my face, and stared at my reflection, my eyes were swollen.I patted my face dry, forced my lips into something that looked like a smile, and answered the call. The moment Naomi’s face appeared on the screen, my heart felt lighter, and then I saw my baby.He was sitting in his high chair, cheeks full, eyes bright… the second he saw me, his whole face lit up, he started laughing and hitting the screen wit

Layla’s POVPregnancy? Her words still echoed in my head.So this strange woman wasn’t just claiming to be Viktor’s fiancée… she was claiming to be carrying his child, for a second, I couldn’t breathe, I felt it again, that sharp, humiliating sting of betrayal, and I hated myself for it.I straightened my shoulders, it wasn’t my business, Viktor could marry ten women and have twenty children for all I cared, I didn’t care, I didn’t, but the tightness in my chest disagreed.I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at the woman again.“Whatever problem you have with him,” I said sharply, “it doesn’t give you the right to disturb everyone here.”She glared at me.“If you want to call him out, do it privately, stop causing a scene.”“Oh, now you’re giving orders?” she shot back.“If you keep screaming,” I continued calmly, “I’m calling the police.”Her eyes darkened, she stepped closer to me, invading my space.“Why are you so defensive?” she asked quietly, her tone shifting. “Why are you

Layla’s POV“Yes”“Yes?” The word barely made it past my lips, for a second, I thought I’d imagined what Detective Morrison had said, my grip tightened around my phone.“The shooter mentioned the name Viktor,” he repeated. My heart skipped, actually skipped, I hated that it skipped that much.A part of me, an embarrassing stubborn part, had hoped Viktor had been telling the truth this morning, that he hadn’t betrayed me yet again, that he hadn’t stood in that hotel suite, looked me in the eyes, and lied another time.My shoulders sagged before I could stop them. Why does that hurt?“Ms. Backwood?” Morrison’s voice sharpened slightly. “Are you still there?”“Yes,” I forced out. There was a pause on the line, then he exhaled quietly.“Actually...”I shot impatiently, “What?”“The Viktor mentioned… is in danger.”My eyes open wider. “I’m sorry?”“He’s a target,” Morrison said calmly. “The shooter claimed Viktor is on Arthur Carter’s list.”I pushed off the wall behind me. “Repeat that
