AIYANA

"Your father is dead. It was Eryx who killed him."

"Why?" I managed to ask, my voice faltering. "Why lie to me?"

Vardam shrugged, as if the weight of it affected him not at all. Even as my body began to grow lethargic, I could feel the anger flowing like thorns, cutting from the inside out.

"Because it was easier. Because it was useful. And, honestly… it was fun to see how much you trusted someone you’d just met, just because he said he was your daddy."

I couldn’t feel the ground beneath my feet. I didn’t hear the wind among the trees. All that existed was that sound.

His voice.
His laugh

  • THE CHOSEN ONE   Chapter 93

AIYANASilence fell between us, heavy as the night. Vardam no longer looked at me. He stood there, back turned, hands caked with earth, the spell pulsing beneath our feet."He died in the arms of the brother who destroyed her…" I whispered, still clinging to the earlier version. He shook his head slowly."No," his voice came low, as if it were hard to say. "Synx did not die. Not yet. When she awoke from the illusion… when she saw that it was not Romã but Helion… she sank into desolation."My brows knit. The air felt thin."He didn't kill her?"Vardam closed his eyes for a moment."Helion scorned her. After getting what he wanted, he abandoned her. Not before creating a prison of his own. A dimension between the world of the living and the dead. A timeless, lightless limbo… where only he had access. And it was there he kept her."I swallowed hard."He imprisoned her?"Vardam nodded, a cold bitterness in the motion."Yes."It wasn't just forbidden magic. It was a distortion of reality.

  • THE CHOSEN ONE   Chapter 92

AIYANAThe morning breeze was cold and damp, carrying the perfume of the garden flowers, too sweet, almost nauseating. With each step, the grass beneath my feet seemed thicker, heavier, as if something below wanted to keep me from moving forward. The back garden was the quietest part of the mansion, with flowerbeds so carefully tended it was hard to notice what lay beneath them.Graves.Bodies buried under the flowers.Vardam was there, his back to me, hands hovering over a circle of stones covered in moss. The surrounding air vibrated with energy, and the petals of the flowers trembled as if alive. He murmured words in an ancient tongue, the spell glowing in shades of purple and gold."Wh

AIYANAThe door clicked shut behind Meredith, and for a moment no one said anything. The bathroom felt larger than it should, filled only with Max’s heavy breathing and the sound of old pipes vibrating in the walls."Are we really going to listen to a witch who’s the lover of a killer?" Max growled, running his hands through his hair. "This was a waste of time. Let’s get out of here.""Wait," my voice came low but firm. "What if she’s right?"Max shot me a surprised look, but it was Icarus who crossed his arms and leaned against the wall, jaw tight."You’re actually considering believing her?"

  • THE CHOSEN ONE   Chapter 90

AIYANAThe hallway to the bathroom felt longer than it should, and the muffled sound of music behind me made everything feel more intimate. More dangerous. When I pushed open the women’s bathroom door, she was already facing the mirror. Watching her own reflection as if analyzing someone else’s soul."You knew I’d come," she said before I could speak. Her voice was deep, warm, rough like old wine."Who are you?" I asked, without hesitation. She turned slowly, her golden eyes now more intense in the dim light. She stepped closer, and I didn’t move. I couldn’t. There was something about her that demanded attention. Obedience. As if she carried a piece of the old

AIYANAGetting out of the house without Vardam noticing was almost a miracle. Or a well-choreographed act of insubordination on our part.Icarus siphoned a bit of the magical barrier with his gift, creating a small gap for us to slip through. Max bribed the garage lock with meticulous breaking and entering. And me? I just followed silently, feeling the blood sing in my veins. That kind of euphoria born when you break rules that could cost your life, yet somehow feel completely worth it.Arkan’s car smelled of smoke and old leather. An older model, with cracked black leather seats and arcane symbols nearly erased under the dashboard. The steering wheel had the cold metallic touch of a forgotten artifact. I sat in the back, the place where I felt least exposed, least vulnerable, and drew the sheath of the knife Max had given me, positioning it within reach of my hand."Relax," Max said, glancing in the rearview mirror with that crooked smile. "If anyone tries to touch you, they lose a h
