LOGINMaya's POV
My thumb hovered over the screen. My half-sister who had been missing for three years, presumed dead, stood on the edge of the Red Leaf border.
She was leaning toward a silver-clad figure, whispering into his ear while armed men shifted behind them in the pine trees.
Before I could speak, the video froze. The screen flashed red and then I lost signal.
Merikh’s phone buzzed violently. He snatched it from his pocket, answering on the first ring.
"Speak," he commanded.
Thomas's voice bled through the speaker, tight and rapid. "Sire, we have a breach on the southern perimeter. System blackout across sectors two and three. We're blind on the eastern ridge."
"Lock down the perimeter," Merikh said, his body going rigid. "I'm on my way."
He didn't offer an explanation. He gave me one sharp look, turned on his heel, and sprinted down the hallway.
Behind me, Liam burst into tears. The harsh strobe of the emergency lights and the sudden blare of the alarm sent him into a panic. He curled into a ball on the rug, his small hands clutched over his ears.
I dropped the tablet onto the chair, knelt on the floor, and pulled him into my lap.
"Shh," I whispered, rocking him back and forth. "You're okay. I've got you."
He buried his face in my neck, his tiny frame trembling against mine. I swayed on the floor, humming a low, wordless melody I used to sing to Leo when the night terrors took over.
I pushed thoughts of Selene, the security breach, and Merikh out of my head, focusing entirely on the rise and fall of the boy's chest. Slowly, his breathing leveled out. His grip on my shirt slackened and his eyelashes fluttering shut as fatigue overtook his fear.
I carried him to his bed, tucked the blanket around his shoulders, and set a heavy wooden toy near his hand so he would see it when he woke up.
Stepping out into the hallway, the silence of the pack house felt unnaturally dense. The alarm had stopped ringing, leaving only the sound of the backup generators. I walked toward the main entrance, needing to find out if the breach was connected to the image of my sister.
Near the front doors, a guard stood at the security desk, staring down at a heavy wooden crate lined with steel bands. He held a clipboard, his face pulled into a deep frown.
"What is that?" I asked, approaching the counter.
The guard jumped, turning to face me before bowing his head slightly. "Luna. It's a delivery. It just passed through the outer gate before the system went dark."
"Who sent it?" I asked, looking down at the wooden crate.
"It arrived by courier from the Red Leaf territory," he said, checking his sheet. "Addressed directly to the Lycan palace. I believe it is for Sire."
My skin went cold as the mention of Caleb's pack made me uneasy. "Open it."
He shifted, looking uncomfortable with the idea. "Sire said—"
"Open it," I repeated, my tone leaving no room for argument.
He hesitated, then pulled a combat knife from his belt and sliced through the industrial tape securing the lid. He pried the wood back, stepping aside.
Inside was a royal scroll and my father's seal. I read through the royal scroll and it was not peace making, but a demand for Merikh to give up half of his land in exchange for my father's seal. It was a bold move, a sign that he was getting arrogant after being fully in charge of my father's pack.
Footsteps echoed from the courtyard. Merikh was returning, flanked by two senior guards, his face dark with fury.
"It was a distraction," Merikh called out as he marched through the doors. "A rogue unit tripped the wire on the south border to draw our patrols away from the primary grid. They were testing our response time."
He stopped when he saw me standing by the crate, his eyes dropping to the open box on the counter.
"What is that?" he demanded, his gaze narrowing. He moved closer, staring into the box and at the royal scroll in my hands. “That scroll belongs to Red Leaf, what is it doing here?”
I handed the scroll to him and after he was done reading it, he clenched the scroll in his hand. Then his eyes moved to the seal. “Whose seal is that?”
“No one's," I said, my voice steady, masking the terror roaring in my chest. "Just Caleb sending mind games to mark his territory. Old documents from Red Leaf."
Merikh stared at me, his sharp eyes searching my face for any sign of a lie. "You shouldn't be handling unvetted packages."
I looked away, the thought of Caleb easily moving on after what he did made my burn in rage. How could he? After everything he did to me yesterday? No, I couldn't let him easily move after everything. He had to pay for everything he put me through.
Merikh watched me for a while and then he spoke. “There'll be a grand ceremony to crown you as my Luna in a week and you can decide whoever you wish to invite.”
My mind reeled with several ways to use this ceremony as an opportunity to take one step closer to my goal.
“If that's the case, then I wish to invite Caleb,” I said with clear certainty. “And it would be the start of my revenge and the beginning of his downfall.”
Merikh’s POVThe doctor’s words hit me immediately like a blow to the gut. My knees almost buckled beneath me, but I forced my legs to lock into place, refusing to break down."Can I see her?" I asked, my voice strained. Before the doctor could answer, the doors clicked open again, and nurses wheeled Maya out into the hallway. Maya lay motionless on the mattress, her face pale and a bandage wrapped around her head."You may visit her," the doctor said, watching me closely. "Since you are her husband, I will grant you access to her private ward. However, only one person is permitted inside at a time to keep the environment quiet."I didn't answer as I followed the medical team down the hall, standing back as they transferred her to a bed inside a private room and hooked up her IV lines. When the nurses finally left, the room fell into a suffocating silence.I stood frozen in the doorway. Seeing her lying so helpless, her head wrapped and her wrist bandaged, tore through my composure. I
Merikh’s POVCold river water flooded my lungs, shocking my system back into consciousness and I struggled to keep myself from drowning. The SUV was upside down in the deep current, sinking deeper into the river, and the darkness swallowed us.Air bubbles surged upward as the impact was sudden. I wiped the blood from my eyes and immediately reached into the passenger side, my hands searching until my fingers caught Maya’s arm.She was completely unconscious, her body limp in the seat. And her hair danced in the water.
Maya's POV."Drop the gun, Maya," Merikh commanded, taking another measured step toward me.My knuckles turned white as I tightened my grip on the handle. "Stay back!"His eyes narrowed into slits. "Liam was poisoned."Silence fell over the ridge. I kept the barrel leveled at his chest, my chest heaving, but I didn't utter a word.Merikh’s face hardened as he registered my lack of shock. "You knew," he said, his voice dropping into ice. "You knew my son was fighting for his life, and you still left him exposed to whoever poisoned him.""Did you not hear what I just said?!" I snapped, tears burning my eyes as my voice broke with desperation. "My son is in that laboratory! Leo is breathing right now in that room! I am going to save him!""And how do you plan to do that?" Merikh asked, his voice too calm. "You pull those tubes, you unplug that life support without a portable medical transport crew, and he dies instantly on that concrete floor. What was your backup plan, Maya?"The words
Maya's POVThe steel pressed against the base of my skull, but my instincts took over before my mind could register the fear.I ducked beneath the guard's arm, driving my elbow back into his solar plexus. He grunted, stumbling back, but recovered fast, lunging with his knife. I caught his wrist, twisted it inward until his joint snapped and slammed my knee into his jaw.The blade clattered onto the ground. As he went down, I wrapped my arms around his neck, applying a chokehold until his struggles ceased completely.Breathing heavily, I dragged his limp body off the path and into the woods. As I pulled his collar to check for a pulse, a mark on the side of his neck caught my eye under the moonlight. I leaned in closer with my blood running cold. Inked clearly into his skin was the official crest of the Lycan pack territory. My brow furrowed in confusion. Why was a soldier guarding black-market facility wearing the mark of Merikh’s inner guard? Was he a double agent? A spy planted by M
Maya's POVMy mind was spinning so fast that I barely registered Thomas telling Merikh that someone was at the door. Before I could process his words or step back, the door opened exposing me to both of them.I offered an awkward smile, clutching my hands together. "I... I was looking for Merikh."Thomas offered a brief nod and excused himself, closing the door behind him. The air in the office immediately felt heavy as I stood from across Merikh.Merikh watched me closely, taking in my stiff posture while I avoid his gaze. I could see the soft concern in his eyes, he must be thinking that my distance was the result of grieving my lost son and carrying the guilt over Liam's condition.I didn't correct him. Letting him believe that lie was easier than admitting the truth."Come with me," Merikh said quietly. "You need fresh air."He led me out of the castle and into the grounds behind the pack house. We walked in silence until we reached a massive, ancient tree standing near the edge o
Maya's POVMy hands shook violently as I picked up the burner phone and pressed redial. My heart pounded against my ribs as it rang for a while before it connected."I was wondering when you would call, Maya," Caleb’s voice boomed softly through the speaker, filled with arrogant delight. "I knew you wouldn't keep me waiting long.""Is Leo really alive?" I demanded, gripping the phone until my knuckles turned white. "Why did you fake his death, Caleb? Why put me through that agony?"Caleb let out a cold laugh that made my stomach churn. "Your questions are utterly hilarious. Do you honestly think I wanted a weak, sickly child like Leo attached to my name? He was a complete insult to my public image. I wanted the boy dead, Maya. I truly did."He paused, a smug breath passing through the line. "But I changed my mind. I felt a small flicker of sympathy for him. He is my flesh and blood, after all. My first child.""Sympathy?" I scoffed, a bitter edge cutting through my voice. "You felt sy
