Episode 4: Hurtful Mockery

last update Huling Na-update: 2026-01-14 00:57:53

“Out!” Tardrain screamed, stamping his palm on his wheelchair armrest, his chest rose and fell in rage.

Ivana stood frozen in place, her legs refusing to move. The shocking discovery sent her mind reeling, struggling to grasp the truth.

Ivana’s feet rooted to the floor. The shock still buzzed in her veins, he was crippled. No one had warned her. Not Lilico. Not Gladdis. Not even Davis. Did they hide it on purpose? Her mind spun. ‘Davis wouldn’t lie to me… would he?’

But the irony hit harder. The untouchable Tardrain Brooklyn, The New York’s golden monster, the man who crushed empires with his successful company—reduced to this shadowed room, hiding his broken body while the world believed he was conquering abroad.

He had an accident, amnesia. A secret kept from the world.

Well, damn, she thought, a dark thrill curling in her belly. This just got interesting.

“Why the stare?” His voice dropped lower, colder, those piercing brown eyes locking onto hers like a predator sighting prey. Even seated, he dominated the space.

He wondered how a total stranger got into his room, and her face wasn’t familiar to any of the servants he knew.

Strangely, Ivana found herself staring back. Despite the fear she should have felt, she gazed at him calmly, her thoughts running wild. Lilico’s words flashed through her mind and she regained her composition;

‘Act brave and don’t be scared of him.’ Lilico’s words echoed in her head.

Ivana let out a soft chuckle and stood upright. “You’re not what I’d expected,” she said, her voice lancing with mockery,  focusing on his face to avoid looking at his wheelchair, regardless of his cold glare.

Tardrain scoffed, his dark eyes flickering with amusement. “Disappointed?” He wondered where her audacity came from to stare into his eyes, with that mockery gaze of hers.

“Just didn’t expect our proud peacock to be sitting in a wheelchair,” she retorted, her gaze drifting away from his, to his wheelchair, a hint of a smirk playing on her lips.

Tardrain’s face turned beet red with anger and he snapped his fury gaze at her. That was a huge punch to his guts, as his hands tightened around his wheelchair.

‘Damn! Where did the courage come from?’ Ivana was also shocked by her words.

Tardrain’s jaw slightly dropped, a mixture of outrage and shock etched on his face. His gaze locked onto hers, then his expression darkened. He slammed his clenched fist on his wheelchair armrest.

“You’re fired!”

Ivana scoffed, as all the fears she was once feeling within disappeared, and she felt more brave and was enjoying every bit of it.

“You didn’t hire me. Do I look like your maid?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. She slowly paced around the lavish room, dark room.

His spacious room was large enough to accommodate ten people, with a huge quality couch. She carefully avoided the broken flower vase glass scattered on the floor even in the dark.

“Get out!” Tardrain yelled angrily again, his fingers clenching the armrest, rage surging through his veins as he stared at her as if he’d eat her alive for not shivering in fear or running out crying just like the others.

‘Why should I?’ she thought. ‘I’m here for the money… and maybe a little revenge on men who think they own the world.’

Ivana leaned in, her face inches from his as he sat in his wheelchair, his chest straining against the constraints. His messy dark curly hair framed his face, accentuating his sharp jawline. His piercing brown eyes bored into her soul as he glared.

Her heart raced while her mind jumbled with thoughts. A surge of adrenaline ran through her veins as she wondered what she’d do next. Retreat or stand her ground?

How can someone this beautiful be such a disgusting bastard? Her heart slammed against her ribs. A traitorous pulse throbbed low in her belly.

Tardrain’s cologne hit her nostrils, a complex mix of bergamot with a hint of Tom Ford Noir, lingering on his two-piece baggy pajamas.

She held his glare, her heart pounding. “Or what, Tardrain? Stand up and drag me out with your crippled legs?”

The words landed like a slap. His eyes widened in shock, then pure, molten fury. His chest rose and fell faster, the fabric of his pajamas stretching tight across defined muscle.

“Who the hell are you?” Tardrain snared between gritted teeth.

He felt humiliated that she was called him crippled, without any hint of fear which made his blood boil like a hot volcano ready to burst.

Ivana let out a short chuckle, overlooking his angry face. “Tardrain Brooklyn, I'm your loving wife.” she whispered.

Tardrain’s eyes widened in shock. Without waiting for a response, she sauntered out of the room, holding her breath until she escaped the suffocating tension.

Outside Tardrain’s room, Ivana closed the door behind her and slumped against the wall. Her chest heaved violently, her trembling hands pressing against her ribcage as if trying to trap her runaway heartbeat.

‘Damn! Where did that courage come from?’ A shaky smile split her lips, pride swelling in her chest. ‘I stared at him. Looked straight into his eyes.’ She giggled, half-hysterical, as she stumbled downstairs, her legs still wobbly with adrenaline.

Lilico stepped into the hall, her sharp eyes narrowing as she yanked Ivana into a pastel-pink bedroom. The door slammed shut. “How did it go?”

Ivana nodded, her shoulders sagging as she collapsed onto the bed. “I did as you said. I was bold and wasn’t intimidated by him.” Her voice wavered, betraying the fear she’d buried beneath bravado.

Lilico’s gaze widened, her painted lips parting in disbelief. This wasn’t the response she’d expected.

“You… actually did that?” A slow, predatory grin crept across her face. “Wow. You’re getting professional at this.”

Their laughter rang hollow, Ivana’s fraying nerves masked by forced humor. Suddenly her phone buzzed, and she fumbled to check it. A notification glowed: $2,000,000 deposited.

“Two million dollars? Who sent this?” she gasped, her voice cracking.

“I did!” Lilico waved her phone, smugness oozing from every pore.

“Why? What for?” Ivana exclaimed, as all color drained from her face.

“For doing a wonderful job today.” Lilico responded, smiling calmly.

“I didn’t do much,” Ivana muttered, shying away, her cheeks flushing with uneasy pride. She was already thinking of how to send it to Davis to pay off some of the debtors.

Lilico flopped onto the bed beside her, draping an arm over her shoulders. “Nobody walks into that room and comes out the same. You either see them crying or begging. You survived.”

“Why?” Ivana eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

“Because Tardrain treats everyone like trash, even his mother and me, his sister.” Lilico’s voice sharpened, her smirk twisting into something venomous

“Thank God, someone who hated him as much as I did tampered with his car before he left for the airport. Now he’s disabled forever.” Triumph glittered in her eyes as if she’d carved her name into a trophy.

Ivana stiffened, a cold knot tightening in her stomach. ‘She’s the real devil.’ Ivana stared at Lilico in amusement, as she kept racking her brain, thinking about what might be the root of this rivalry between siblings.

Lilico sprang up, ran into her closet, and rolled out a sleek designer suitcase, “These are your new clothes. I selected them myself,” She rolled the suitcase to Ivana and thrust a crisp paper into Ivana’s hands. “His rules.”

Ivana scanned the list, her blood turning to ice. “Don’t breathe too loud. Don’t make a sound while walking. Your head always bowed. I hate noise. Don’t sleep while I’m awake. Your hands are my table…”

“The hell is this?” Ivana exclaimed, wondering how could Tardrain be so inconsiderate about the people around him.

“There’s more.” Lilico tossed another sheet at her, laughter bubbling inside of her, watching Ivana’s expression.

Ivana’s throat closed as she read. “And I’m supposed to follow these?” She waved the paper in the air.

“Or you’ll be fired!” Lilico sing-songed, collapsing into giggles, already enjoying Ivana’s company, and saw how reliable she was. Lilico was so relieved to find someone who actually matched her brother’s energy without stress.

“How did he react when you talked back?” Lilico sat beside her as she leaned in for the gist.

Ivana scrunched her face to demonstrate Tardrain’s furious expression. “Out!” she barked, mimicking his voice.

Lilico cackled, doubling over. “I bet he almost ate you alive!” They both roared into laughter. Ivana gradually felt comfortable around Lilico, and she didn’t miss noticing how pretty Lilico looked and even more prettier when she smiled.

Set aside Lilico’s scheming and cunning personality, she’s also sweet and easy to be around with. Ivana was already seeing that side of her in her words and gestures, and planned to get even closer to her to find out more of her hidden agenda.

Ivana nodded, her laughter brittle as she stared at the papers again, ‘Tardrain, let’s break your shield before making you fall in love.’ Her fingers tightened around the rules, resolving hardening beneath the dread.

“Why did he go there?” Lilico pressed, eyes narrowing like she could see straight through Ivana’s skin.Ivana’s pulse spiked as she forced the words out in a rush. “Uhm… because I forced him to.”Both Lilico and Davis blinked in unison, staring at each other before averting their gaze back to Ivana.“Wait—what?” Lilico gasped, leaning forward. “You forced Tardrain?”“How?” Davis’s voice cracked with disbelief. He remembered her panicked call days ago, how nothing was working, that Tardrain was a wall of ice. Now this? Tardrain actually listening to her? The thought twisted something new in his chest.Ivana felt her heartbeat begin to steady. They were buying it. She could see the curiosity swallow their suspicion. She turned to Lilico with what she hoped looked like casual confidence.“I used the method you two taught me,” she said, shrugging one shoulder. “I took good care of him, and told him I wanted us to go out. He refused at first, obviously, but I kept pushing. Eventually he ga

Mrs. Gladdis stepped fully into the room, the door clicking shut behind her. Her fists were clenched so tight, as she crossed the space in three deliberate strides and stopped onto the edge of the bed. She fixed her eyes on Tardrain. She stared at him down, from his hair, over the loose white shirt still clinging slightly from the shower, all the way to his bare feet resting on the wheelchair footrests. Hate rolled off her in waves, thick and suffocating. Every second she looked at him, the anguish in her chest swelled bigger, hotter. It was getting harder, so fucking hard, to wake up every day knowing he was still breathing under her roof. The fake-marriage lie had worked like a charm so far. Everyone believed Ivana was his wife, the perfect shield to keep the Tardrain away from the inheritance. But this man? He wouldn’t stop. Even when everyone thought he didn't care, his eyes still tracked every property, every account, every piece of his father’s empire like it still belonged to

  • THE CRIPPLED BILLIONAIRE IS MINE TO KILL   Chapter 28: UNEXPECTED VISIT

Tardrain stirred under the duvet, eyes fluttering open to the soft gray light filtering through the curtains. It's morning already. He pushed the covers off slowly, sat up on the edge of the bed, and let his gaze drift around the room His face fell, just for a minute. Everywhere was empty. No trace of anyone else, except him.“She’s not here?” he muttered, staring at the door like it might answer him. “I thought she was…” The words trailed off, hanging in the quiet room. He frowned, confused by his own half-formed thought. Strangely, he’d felt her presence, a warmth, a weight beside him, maybe the faint brush of hair against his arm, but it had slipped away the second he woke. He shook his head sharply, trying to clear it. ‘It was probably just a dream.’ That was the easiest explanation. He reached over to the nightstand, and grabbed his tablet, his fingers brushing the cool surface.‘Since when do you start to dream about her?’ The voice in his head was sharp, almost mocking. He p

  • THE CRIPPLED BILLIONAIRE IS MINE TO KILL   Chapter 27: The Pull

Ivana walked up the staircase that led to Tardrain’s room, hands shoved deep into the pockets of her sweatpants. Each step felt heavier than the last. When she finally reached the top, she stopped right in front of his door, heart thudding loud. She stood there, frozen, running every possible scenario in her head. So many thoughts crashed together at once.‘Will he be furious that I left the restaurant and never came back home?’ The question looped, sharp and guilty. She shook her head quickly, side to side, trying to push it away, but her mind was already a complete jumbled mess, exhaustion, hurt from Davis, dread about Tardrain all tangled up.She pulled her phone out of her pocket, glanced at the screen and saw that it was 10 p.m. Tardrain was probably asleep by now. Part of her hoped he was, while another part of her dreaded facing him even more if he wasn’t.She didn’t knock. Instead she reached for the handle, twisted it gently, slow, careful, trying not to make a single sound.

  • THE CRIPPLED BILLIONAIRE IS MINE TO KILL   Chapter 26: GOING TO HIS ROOM

Ivana heard the jingle of car keys, the rustle of an umbrella being grabbed, the slam of a door. Then the sound of an engine starting, tires screeching as Lilico zoomed out of the mansion driveway before ending the call.Ivana wrapped her arms tight around her body, trying to hold in what little warmth was left. Her teeth chattered, lips trembling from the cold. She lifted her head, eyes scanning Davis’ window one last time.Hoping, stupidly, to see him there, watching her, maybe regretting everything. But the curtains were drawn, the light off, the window shut tight like he’d already closed her out for good. A hard lump rose in her throat and she swallowed it down, but the tears came anyway, hot, fast, mixing with the rain running down her face. The downpour got heavier, relentless. Just when she thought she might break right there on the sidewalk, headlights cut through the dark. Lilico’s car pulled up sharp at the gate.Lilico’s jaw dropped the second she saw Ivana, soaked to the b

  • THE CRIPPLED BILLIONAIRE IS MINE TO KILL   Chapter 25: Heated Argument.

“Ehm… mhmm.” He cleared his throat, and shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “I have cleared just two people.”“Just two?” Her eyes slowly widened, voice rising in shock. It sounded insane. Like..after all the money she’d been sending, huge amounts and just only two people had been paid?Davis nodded, casually. “Yeah, babe. The money didn’t go far. It was too little.”“Little?” Her voice dropped, almost a whisper, full of disbelief. “What happened to all the money Lilico gave the first time she came to see me?” she asked, finally voicing out the question that had been eating at her for days now.Davis swallowed hard. His eyes darted away for a second, nervously. “I used some of it to clear our rent… and I bought a few new clothes for myself.”Ivana let out a short, bitter scoff. Her boyfriend never stopped surprising her, and not in a good way this time. “Paying rent is understandable… but new clothes? That wouldn’t even cost much. So where’s the rest of the money?”Davis shot up from h
