Rynna’s Pov

I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling, my phone clutched in my hand. Tomorrow was the talent show, but I didn’t feel excited. Everyone would be there with their parents cheering them on. Everyone but me.

I had called Mom earlier, hoping she’d changed her mind.

“Sweetheart, I really want to come,” she’d said, “but there’s an important meeting at the school tomorrow. I can’t miss it.”

Her voice sounded busy.

“It’s fine, Mom,” I’d lied, forcing a small laugh before hanging up.

Then I tried Aunt Camila. She picked up on the third ring.

“Rynna, sweetheart, I’m in the middle of something big, can I call you back?” she had said. She sounded breathless—probably working again.

I didn’t bother telling her about the show. “It’s okay, Auntie. I just wanted to say hi,” I said softly before hanging up.

I didn’t want to go with Grandpa or Grandma—they always made things awkward. So, I just lay there, hugging my pillow and feeling small.

Then I suddenly remembered him—the cute stranger

  • THE DEVIL'S MISTRESS   The waiting game: Shadows at the door

Marco’s PovRenz’s study was quiet the next morning.Too quiet.Sunlight spilled through the wide glass windows, painting the room in gold, but Renz didn’t seem to notice. He stood there, hands behind his back, staring out like the city below owed him answers.“Lord Bronco and his men will arrive in two days,” I reported calmly. “The cargo lands the same day.”Renz said nothing.I watched him from where I stood, wondering what war he was already fighting in his head.“I was thinking,” I continued, testing the silence, “maybe the men and I should wait until everything arrives.”Still no reply. Then his voice came out low but firm.“I’ll handle things here.”He turned slightly, just enough for me to know he meant it.“There’s no need for you to delay your movement,” he added. “Get ready. You’re taking the next flight.”I clicked my tongue, forcing a grin. “You’re not even looking at me. Afraid you’ll miss me too much?”That finally earned me a reaction.Renz glanced over his shoulder, u

I went towards my brothers’ room and stopped by the door.I hadn’t meant to listen. But their voices held me there.“I always wanted Renz to be strong,” James was saying. “To be protected. But somewhere along the line… I thought he was doing too much. Carrying too much.”He paused. “Now I see it clearly. He’s exactly where he’s meant to be. He found his purpose.”Leonard sighed. “This life suits him. But what we did—what we didn’t do—was unfair. We were careless with him.”“The business was heavy,” Leonard continued. “No one thought Renz could lose everything that fast.”James answered quietly, “Power twists things. Renz had influence… but he also had enemies. People who hated him more than we knew.”There was a short silence.“Thank God he survived,” James said. “Let’s hope things go as planned this time.”“But it couldn’t have been easy,” Leonard added. “Leaving your family.”I stepped in then.“Yeah,” I said calmly. “How are they doing?”Both of them turned fast.“Renz—” James brea

The table was full.James. Leonard.Bianca. Rob.For a second, I forgot how to breathe.I sat at the head of the table, hands steady, spine straight, while every pair of eyes stayed on me like they were staring at a ghost that refused to disappear. No one spoke. Even Marco was quiet. The air felt heavy—thick with shock, doubt, relief, fear.I cleared my throat.“Thank you for coming,” I said calmly. “I know it wasn’t easy. And as you can see… I’m alive and whole.”No one smiled. No one relaxed. They were still trying to convince themselves this wasn’t a trick of the mind.Rob leaned back first, eyes narrowing.“Honestly, Renz,” he said slowly, “I always knew I’d die before you. So you surviving doesn’t shock me.” His gaze dragged over me. “But you look nothing like the man I remember.”Leonard dropped his eyes.“I only found out recently,” he said quietly. “James told me. I’m sorry, Renz. I failed you as a brother.”James nodded, guilt written all over his face.“I tried reaching Marc

*Six Months Later*Renz's PovMarco stood across the table, calm as ever.“Everything’s moving,” he said. “Our guest will arrive soon.”I exhaled slowly, letting the breath steady the storm in my chest. Then I asked the only thing that mattered.“And Nyx?”Marco didn’t rush his answer. That alone told me enough.“She’s been found. Gabriel moved her to a quiet siren zone outside town. Heavy watch. He’s keeping her there. The words landed hard. I didn’t let it show.Didn’t tighten my jaw. Didn’t clench my fists. But inside, something dark shifted.I breathed slowly. “So. What’s the plan?”“I’m still working the entrance,” Marco replied. “Once I reach her, everything speeds up.”I turned away, staring at the far wall. Images pressed into my head—Nyx trapped, watched, breathing under another man’s roof.“I’m holding back because you asked me to,” I said quietly. “Otherwise, I’d burn that bastard’s world in one night.”Marco shook his head. “That won’t give you peace.”I looked at him.“Th

The study was quiet and Elena stood before me. Too quiet. The kind of silence that pressed on the chest. I leaned back in my chair and watched her face. “How is she?” I asked. Elena hesitated. That alone told me everything. “She barely speaks,” she said softly. “She doesn’t eat unless I beg her. She just… sits there. Staring. Some days, I’m not even sure she hears me.” I nodded once, slow. “She’ll come around,” I said. “Grief needs time.” Elena’s eyes lifted to mine, full of doubt. “With respect, sir… I’ve been there. I lost a child too. Living like this—” she shook her head. “It kills you slowly.” Her words landed, but I didn’t let them show. “Try harder,” I said calmly. “Don’t give up on her. Everything will settle with time.” She didn’t look convinced. I studied her for a moment, then spoke again, quieter. “You know what Nyx means to me now, don’t you?” Elena said nothing. “I intend to make this work,” I continued. “For real this time. She will wake up from this nigh

Gabriel’s PovThe place was a mess.I stood there with Sandro and a few of the men, staring at what was left...trying to understand what I was seeing. Drawers torn out. The safe empty. Blood dried into the floor like a warning carved in red.“How did this happen?” I asked.Sandro shook his head. “I got here the same way you did. Everything was already gone.”I stayed quiet for a moment, then asked, “Do you have anyone in mind?”Sandro hesitated. “Aside from our own men… only people close to Renz would know about that safe. His old allies.”I exhaled slowly. “Marco is still walking free.” My jaw tightened. “If he’s the one stirring this shit, he should’ve stayed hidden. I won’t miss him twice.”Sandro scoffed. “Or maybe”—he paused—“maybe Nyx isn’t as innocent as she looks. Maybe she—”I turned on him. “Nyx is mine to handle,” I cut in coldly. “Watch your mouth. I'll look into her myself. ”The air went tight. Heavy. Then my phone rang.Elena.“What is it?” I demanded the second I answ
