A MOTHER’S NAME

Kieran’s POV

The first thing I noticed was the date. It sat in the corner of the acquisition record, unremarkable at a glance, until I placed it beside the historical file Darius had pulled from our archive.

The company name appeared in both. That was the connection. Nothing more. The transactions around it were different, the account references did not match, and the documents had been created for separate purposes. A shared name could be a lead, but it was not proof.

THE QUESTION CAELAN AVOIDEDCaelan’s POVRiona’s response was waiting on my desk when I arrived.I opened the document expecting an explanation, perhaps a carefully worded attempt to defend herself or remind me of everything I had done. Instead, I found three paragraphs addressing the development record my legal team had requested. Every answer was precise, professionally structured, and limited to the questions asked. She identified the reference number, explained her involvement in the acquisition process, and pointed out a discrepancy between two versions of the property description. She also clarified that the final approval had not fallen within her responsibilities. There was no personal message. No accusation. Not even a single sentence asking me to reconsider what had happened between us.I read the response again, my expression tightening. After everything, she could still communicate with me as though I were simply another executive requesting information from a former emplo

A TRANSACTION WITHOUT AN OWNERKieran’s POVThe transaction had three names attached to it, and none of them appeared to own the property.I studied the records spread across my desk while Darius stood beside the screen, waiting for my assessment. The first company had acquired the development rights. A second entity appeared in the subsequent transfer, while a third was listed in the paperwork connected to the final transaction. Each change had been supported by corporate documentation, but the available records offered no clear explanation of who ultimately benefited. It was an arrangement designed to make a straightforward question unnecessarily difficult.“Have you identified the controlling interests?” I asked.“Not completely,” Darius replied. “The first two entities have identifiable directors, but the ownership information for the third is limited. Some of the available filings refer to intermediary companies.”“And the money?”“We’re still tracing the payment references. The

THE ACCOUNT THAT WAS’NT HERSRiona’s POVThe security alert remained open on my laptop when I woke the following morning.I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I pictured someone sitting behind a screen, moving through an account that had once belonged to my working life.I opened the alert again and recorded the details in my notebook: the date, the time, the unfamiliar device information, and the notification wording. I saved another copy of the notice and downloaded the available account activity. I did not click through unfamiliar links or attempt to trace the device myself. The account provider had an official support channel for reporting unauthorized access, and that was where I needed to start. After submitting the report, I received an automated confirmation and a reference number. I saved that too.Only then did I call my legal adviser.“Someone accessed the old Wrenhold account,” I explained. “I have the alert and the activity notice. I’ve reported it to the prov

THE STORY THEY TOLD ABOUT HERRiona’s POVThe first message appeared while I was making coffee.Someone had shared an article about me in a group chat I had not opened in weeks. I read the headline, then the first few paragraphs, and felt my stomach tighten.According to the story, I had become jealous when Caelan’s first love returned. I had attacked Melania, endangered her daughter, and then suffered a pregnancy loss under circumstances the writer described as suspicious. The article presented each event as though it had followed naturally from the one before it.There was no mention of the accusation being built on evidence I had not been allowed to examine properly. No mention of the hours I had spent trying to explain myself. Nothing about Caelan refusing to come when I was bleeding, or the divorce papers he placed before me afterward. The story had a beginning, a villain, and a grieving mother. It simply wasn’t my story.I closed the article, but the words stayed with me. By the

THE COST OF BEING USEFULRiona’s POVThe papers had begun to take over the room.My laptop sat open beside them, displaying a spreadsheet I had already reviewed twice. I had agreed to help because I needed answers.Every morning brought another request. I was beginning to resent how the investigation had pushed everything else aside, but stopping now was not an option. Could I explain why a property had been classified under one development category? Did I remember who approved a preliminary assessment? Had I ever seen a particular reference number? Now every detail felt dangerous. I had to be precise about what I remembered, what I had personally handled, and what I had only seen in passing. Even ordinary uncertainty made me uneasy. My phone vibrated.Kieran’s message was brief. He wanted me in the conference room downstairs. His team had organized another set of property-related entries and needed my interpretation. When I arrived, Kieran was standing beside a large screen. Two docu

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE HEADLINESMelania’s POVThe headlines were doing exactly what I had expected.Three different accounts had repeated the same version of the story. Riona Wren was the jealous wife. I was the frightened woman who had nearly lost everything, a mother trying to protect a sick child from a situation she had never wanted. The wording varied, but the picture remained consistent. People were arguing over Riona’s motives while offering sympathy to me.I read the comments with a cup of tea beside me, scrolling slowly through the familiar expressions of outrage. Some called her unstable. Others wondered how a wife could become so bitter over a man’s past. A few questioned why Caelan had tolerated her for so long. Those comments pleased me more than I cared to admit. It was easier to guide a story when people were already willing to believe it. I did not need to explain every detail. I only had to appear shaken, concerned for my daughter, and too exhausted to defend myself.
