Cassandra woke to an empty bed.

The sheets beside her were cold. Dante had been gone for a while. She sat up slowly, her body still heavy with exhaustion, her mind already racing. The text from Marcus Kane. The necklace. The threat.

She found him by the window, his back to her, his phone in his hand. He was staring at the screen, his jaw tight, his shoulders rigid.

"You've been up for hours," she said quietly.

He didn't turn around. "I couldn't sleep."

She crossed the room, wrapping her arms around him from behind. Her cheek pressed against his back. She could feel the tension in his muscles, the weight he was carrying.

"Show me," she said.

He turned, his eyes searching hers. Then he handed her the phone.

You think you've won. But you've forgotten the most important piece. The necklace. I still have it. And I know how to use it.

Cassandra read the message three times. Her blood ran cold.

"He wants the necklace," she whispered.

"He knows how to use it." Dante's voice was flat. "He knows what's inside. He knows it can destroy him—and he'll do anything to get it first."

Cassandra's hand went to her throat. The pendant was still there, warm against her skin. Her mother's necklace. The only thing she had left of her.

"We can't let him get it."

"We won't." Dante pulled her into his arms. "I've already called Marco. He's bringing in a specialist. Someone who can extract the data before Marcus can get to it."

---

The specialist arrived within hours.

Her name was Dr. Sarah Chen—a cryptographer and data specialist who owed Dante a favor. She was small, sharp-eyed, with graying hair and a no-nonsense demeanor.

She examined the necklace under a magnifying glass, her brow furrowed.

"This is remarkable," she murmured. "The encryption is sophisticated. Multi-layered. Your mother was brilliant."

Cassandra watched, her heart aching. Her mother was brilliant. She was brave. And now her legacy rested in the hands of strangers.

"How long will it take?" Dante asked.

"Give me a few hours." Dr. Chen didn't look up. "I need to be careful. One wrong move and the data could be corrupted."

---

Cassandra drifted while Dr. Chen worked.

She found herself in the small bedroom of the safe house, staring at the wall. Her mind wandered to places she didn't want to go. Her grandmother. Her mother. The life she might have had if things had been different.

She closed her eyes.

The memory came unbidden. She was five years old, sitting on her grandmother's lap. Evelyn was humming a lullaby, her arms wrapped around Cassandra, her warmth seeping into her bones.

"Your mother left you something special," Evelyn said. "Something that will protect you."

Cassandra didn't understand then. She understood now.

The memory shifted. She saw her mother's face—not from photographs, but from a dream. A dream she'd had a thousand times. Grace was reaching for her, calling her name.

Emma. Emma.

Cassandra woke with tears on her face.

---

"Cassandra."

Dante was beside her, his hand on her shoulder. She blinked, disoriented.

"Dr. Chen is done."

Cassandra sat up, her heart pounding. She followed him to the main room.

Dr. Chen was standing by the table, a flash drive in her hand. Her expression was unreadable.

"I found something," she said. "The evidence is there—everything you need to expose Marcus Kane. But there's something else."

She handed Cassandra the flash drive.

"It's a message. From your mother."

Cassandra's hands trembled. "A message?"

"Text. Audio. Video. She left it for you."

Cassandra stared at the drive. Her mother's voice. Her mother's face. It was more than she'd ever hoped for.

---

She played it.

The screen flickered, and then Grace Hayes appeared.

She was younger than Cassandra had imagined—beautiful, with dark hair and warm eyes. She was sitting in a small room, the light soft, her expression serious.

My dearest Emma,

If you're watching this, I'm gone. But I need you to know—I didn't leave you. I fought for you until my last breath.

The evidence in this necklace will expose the men who destroyed our family. Use it. But don't let revenge consume you. Live your life. Be happy. That's all I ever wanted for you.

I love you. Always.

Your mother, Grace

The video ended.

Cassandra sat in silence, tears streaming down her face. Dante was beside her, his hand on her back.

"I never knew her," she whispered. "Not really. But she loved me. She loved me so much."

"She did," Dante said quietly. "And she'd be proud of you."

---

That night, Cassandra held the flash drive in her hands.

Everything she needed to destroy Marcus Kane was on it. Every crime. Every connection. Every proof.

She looked at Dante, her eyes red but determined.

"We're going to finish this," she said. "For her. For everyone he's hurt."

Dante nodded. "Together."
