"You look just like her."

Damian's voice was soft, almost reverent. He stood in the doorway of Vivian's bedroom, his silver-grey eyes fixed on her face with an intensity that made her stomach tighten. She'd been packing her bag, preparing to leave, when he'd appeared without warning.

"Like who?" she asked, though she already knew the answer.

"Emilia." He stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. "The same hair. The same eyes. The same way you tilt your head when you're confused." He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I thought I was losing my mind when I first saw you. I thought she'd come back to me."

Vivian's grip tightened on the bag. "I'm not her, Damian. I never was."

"I know that now." He walked toward her, slow and deliberate. "But when I first found you, I convinced myself you were a gift. A second chance. A way to undo what I'd done."

"What you'd done?" She stepped back, her spine hitting the wall. "What did you do?"

He stopped a few feet away, his expression unreadable. "I told you. Emilia died because of me. I killed her. And then I spent years searching for someone who could fill the void she left behind." He paused. "I found you in that orphanage. You were sitting in the corner, reading a book, completely alone. You looked up at me with those eyes, and I knew."

"You knew what?"

"That you were meant to be with me." His voice dropped, low and intimate. "Not as a replacement. As something I could keep. Something that belonged to me."

Vivian's stomach turned. The way he said it made her feel like an object, a possession he'd acquired. There was no warmth in his words, only ownership. "I'm not a replacement for your dead sister."

"No." His gaze flickered. "You're not. You're something else entirely."

She didn't want to know what he meant by that. She didn't want to know anything else about the dark places in his mind. All she wanted was to leave, to escape this house and the man who'd stolen her life.

"I'm going to bed," she said, her voice steady despite the fear curling in her chest. "I'm tired."

Damian studied her for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "Of course. Rest well, Vivian."

He turned and walked out, closing the door behind him. She heard his footsteps fade down the hallway, and only then did she allow herself to breathe.

---

She didn't sleep that night.

Instead, she sat on the edge of her bed, the letter from the attic spread across her lap. She'd read it a dozen times, trying to piece together its meaning. The words were faded, written in a hand she didn't recognize:

My dearest daughter, I hope this letter finds you safe. I was forced to give you up, but I never stopped loving you. I have watched you from afar, and my heart breaks every day knowing you don't know who I am. Please, if you ever read this, know that I wanted you. I never stopped wanting you. I will never stop wanting you.

There was more, but the page was torn. The bottom half was missing, leaving only fragments of sentences and a signature she couldn't read.

Vivian pressed the paper to her chest, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. Somewhere out there, her real mother was searching for her. Somewhere out there, a woman had written this letter, hoping it would reach her.

And Damian had hidden it. He'd kept it from her. He'd built her entire life on a foundation of lies.

She pulled out the birth certificate, studying the name printed at the top. The ink was smudged, the letters blurred and faded. She could make out a few shapes—the first letter, maybe a "R"?—but the rest was impossible to read. Time had worn it away, or someone had deliberately obscured it.

Her real name was lost to her now. Just like everything else.

She thought about what he'd said at dinner the night before. "You look just like her." The way he'd said it, with something like hunger in his eyes. She'd been his replacement, his doll, his perfect little sister. But she'd never been herself. Not once.

She looked at the birth certificate again, searching for any clue. The address led to an orphanage she'd never heard of. The parents listed weren't the ones who'd died in that plane crash. She had fragments, pieces of a puzzle she didn't know how to assemble.

But she had one thing. The certainty that she wasn't who she'd been told she was.

She was someone else. Someone who had a past, a history, a family that had been stolen from her. And she was going to find out who that person was.

No matter what it took.

Vivian did not go to the storage room that night. She could not. The note might have been from Marcus, but it might also have been a trap. So she stayed in her room, locked the door, and waited for morning.Marcus never mentioned the note. For three days, he passed her in the corridors without a word, without a glance. Whatever the note had meant, he had decided not to act on it. And Vivian had decided not to ask.On the third night after the note, she made a mistake.---She had not meant to go back to the west wing. She had told herself she was finished with it. But the last time she had searched Emilia's room, she had found the hidden drawer beneath the desk. There had been something beneath it—a thin false panel she had not had time to open. She needed to see what was behind it. And she knew that if she waited much longer, Damian would seal the entire wing for good.So she slipped out of her room after midnight and made her way through the dark corridors.---She reached Emilia's

Marcus was summoned to Damian's study on the fourth morning.Vivian did not know about it until later. She was in the kitchen when she heard two servants whispering near the pantry. "The master called for Hale this morning." "He looked furious."Vivian kept her head down and continued washing dishes. But her hands had gone cold. Damian had summoned Marcus. Damian was angry. And she had no way of knowing what had happened behind that closed door. She spent the rest of the morning moving through her tasks mechanically. By midday, she had still not seen him.---Marcus did not appear in the garden that afternoon.Vivian waited by the hedge, pretending to gather herbs, but he never came. She waited until the sun began to set, until the air grew cold, until she could no longer justify staying outside. Then she returned to the servant's quarters with a knot in her stomach. She excused herself early from the evening meal and retreated to her room. She sat on the cot with her back against the

Vivian returned to the mansion before dawn. She had spent the night in the city, wandering through streets she did not know, trying to decide whether to run or return. In the end, she had chosen to come back. Not because she wanted to. But because leaving meant abandoning Marcus, and she could not do that. The service tunnel was still unlocked. She slipped through it and made her way back to the servant's quarters, her heart pounding with every step. No one saw her. No one stopped her. She reached her room and locked the door behind her.But as she sat on the cot, she thought about the footsteps she had heard in the tunnel. Someone had followed her. Someone had seen her leave. And she did not know who.---The morning passed in a blur.Vivian moved through her tasks mechanically, her mind elsewhere. She carried trays. She folded linens. She avoided eye contact with everyone she passed. But she felt watched. She felt the weight of unseen eyes on her back.By midday, she understood why.

  • THE FAKE HEIRESS and Her OBSESSIVE BROTHER   Chapter 50: The Warning

Two days passed without a word from Marcus.Vivian counted the hours. She counted them while she scrubbed the kitchen floors, while she folded linens in the laundry room, while she carried trays to rooms she was not supposed to enter. She counted them until the counting itself became a kind of prayer. On the first day, she told herself he was simply being careful. Marcus had contacts to meet, evidence to hand over, people to warn. These things took time. On the second day, she began to worry.By the evening of the second day, she was standing at her window, staring out at the darkened grounds, searching for any sign of movement. There was none. The garden was empty. The gates were closed. The house was silent.Marcus had promised two days. The two days were almost gone.---That night, Vivian did not sleep. She sat on the cot with her back against the wall, the key to the service tunnel clutched in her hand. She had not let it go since Marcus had given it to her. It was the only thing

  • THE FAKE HEIRESS and Her OBSESSIVE BROTHER   Chapter 49: The Cage Returns

The days that followed passed like a slow poison.Vivian noticed the changes immediately, though they were so small that anyone else might have missed them. The doors to the west wing were locked now every single one. The corridors she had learned to move through so easily were sealed off, one by one, like a house slowly closing its eyes. She tested each lock in the quiet hours before dawn and found them all the same. New locks. Heavy and cold.---The garden was next.Five days after Damian's confession, Vivian was sent outside to gather herbs and found the gate at the eastern wall padlocked. She stood there for a long moment, staring at the metal chain, and felt something cold settle in her stomach. She had used that gate before. She had stood at that gate with Marcus and whispered about evidence and plans and the night they would break into Richard's study. That gate had been her way out. Her way to breathe. Now it is closed.---The servants noticed nothing. They still gossiped in

  • THE FAKE HEIRESS and Her OBSESSIVE BROTHER   Chapter 48: The Confession

Vivian did not sleep that night. She could not stop thinking about the photograph Damian had shown her. The garden. The roses. The places she used to hide. Whatever Damian knew about her past, he had known it long before she realized he was watching. But she had not broken. She had not given him what he wanted. And that was something. The next morning, Vivian rose before dawn. She dressed quickly and made her way to the kitchen, her mind still churning. She needed to act normal. She needed to be invisible. But as she stepped into the corridor, she saw him. Damian stood at the end of the hallway, waiting."Sarah." His voice was calm. "Come with me."Vivian's heart pounded. She wanted to refuse. She wanted to run. But she couldn't. She had to play her part. She followed him.---He led her through a series of corridors she had never seen before, past rooms that had been sealed for years. Finally, he stopped in front of a door. "This was Emilia's room," he said.Vivian's blood ran cold.
