"You found the letter, didn't you?"

Vivian's blood turned to ice. She spun around, her heart slamming against her ribs. Damian stood in her bedroom doorway, his tall frame silhouetted against the dim light of the hallway. His silver-grey eyes were fixed on her face, unreadable and cold.

She opened her mouth to deny it, but the papers in her hand betrayed her. The birth certificate. The photographs. The letter she'd pulled from his jacket pocket when he wasn't looking. She'd been so careful, so certain she'd done it without him noticing.

"I can explain," she said, her voice shaking.

Damian stepped into the room, his movements slow and deliberate. He closed the door behind him with a soft click that sounded like a gunshot in the silence. "I told you not to open that door, Vivian. I warned you."

"What's in this letter, Damian?" She held it up, her fingers trembling. "Why does it say 'To my real daughter'? Who is Emilia?" She pulled out the photograph of the dark-haired girl. "Why do I look like her?"

His expression didn't change, but she saw something flicker in his eyes. Pain. Regret. Fear. "You've been digging through the attic," he said, more statement than question. "You found things you weren't meant to find."

"I found my birth certificate." She thrust the paper toward him. "My name isn't Carrington. My parents weren't the ones who died in that crash." Her voice cracked. "Who am I, Damian? What did you do?"

He was quiet for a long moment. The clock on the mantel ticked loudly, marking each agonizing second. Then he crossed the room and sat on the edge of her bed, his shoulders slumping in a way she'd never seen before.

"Please sit down," he said.

"I don't want to sit down. I want answers."

"Sit down, Vivian." His voice was soft but firm. "This is not a story you can hear standing up."

She sank onto the chair by the window, the papers clutched to her chest like a shield. The night pressed against the glass, dark and silent, a mirror of the secrets filling the room.

"I never planned to tell you this," Damian said, staring at his hands. "I wanted you to live your whole life never knowing. It was supposed to protect you."

"Protect me from what?"

"From the truth." He looked up, meeting her eyes. "From the fact that I am not your brother. That I never was."

Vivian's stomach dropped. The words hung in the air between them, heavy and terrible. She wanted to scream, to cry, to run. But something kept her rooted to the chair, waiting for more.

"The letter was addressed to me," Damian continued. "To the daughter I lost before I found you."

"Before you found me?" Vivian's voice rose, sharp and incredulous. "What do you mean, before you found me? I've been here my whole life. You raised me. You're my brother."

"I'm not your brother." The words came out flat, emotionless. "I never was. And I didn't raise you from birth. I brought you here when you were much older. You simply don't remember."

She shook her head, trying to process his words. "That's impossible. I remember—"

"You remember what I told you to remember." He met her gaze, his eyes unblinking. "Memories can be shaped, Vivian. I gave you a new name, a new history, a new family. I gave you everything you thought you knew."

"Then who am I?" she whispered, the words barely audible. "Who was I before you found me?"

Damian was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "A child from an orphanage. A child who had no one. Who was waiting for someone to choose her? I saw you, and I knew you would be perfect."

"Perfect for what?"

"To fill the void." His voice cracked. "After I lost my sister, I was empty. I couldn't bear it. So I found someone who could replace her." He paused. "You looked just like her. The same hair. The same eyes. The same way you smiled. I told myself I was saving you. I told myself I was giving you a home, a family, a future."

"You stole me," Vivian said, her voice hollow. "You took me from my family and made me believe you were my brother."

"You didn't have a family," he said sharply. "Your mother gave you up. She didn't want you. I gave you everything. A home, a name, a life of comfort and privilege."

"Everything except the truth."

She stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor. The papers crumpled in her hand, but she barely noticed. "You took me away from everything I could have been. You made me into a ghost of your sister. You made me pretend to be someone else's daughter." Her voice cracked. "Did you ever love me at all, or was I just a placeholder?"

Damian's expression shifted. Something dark flickered in his eyes. "I love you more than you will ever know," he said, his voice low and controlled. "But there are things you don't understand. Things you don't need to know."

"Then tell me." She stepped toward him, her hands trembling. "Tell me who I really am. Tell me why you chose me. Tell me the truth, Damian."

He looked at her for a long moment, his gaze weighing her, measuring her. Then he shook his head. "I can't."

"You won't."

"Both." He stood, walking toward the window. "Some truths are too dangerous. They would hurt you. They would destroy the life we've built." He turned back to face her. "I have given you everything. I have protected you. I have loved you. That is all you need to know."

Vivian stared at him, a cold realization settling in her chest. He wasn't going to tell her. He would never tell her. The truth was something he wanted to keep hidden. Something he was willing to protect at any cost.

The papers in her hand felt heavier. The birth certificate. The letter. The photograph of a girl who looked like her. These were the only fragments of truth she had.

And she was going to find out the rest on her own.

"Fine," she said, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. "You won't tell me. I'll find out for myself."

Damian's eyes narrowed. "Vivian—"

She stepped toward the door. "I'm not staying here. I'm not going to be your replacement, your placeholder, your perfect little sister. I'm done pretending."

"You can't leave."

"Try and stop me."

She opened the door and ran.

The forest swallowed them whole.Vivian ran until the mansion disappeared behind the trees, cold air burning her throat while branches scratched her bare arms. Elena stayed beside her, stumbling over roots but refusing to stop.Behind them, something cracked, and they both froze. For one terrifying second, Vivian heard nothing except her heartbeat before another branch snapped somewhere in the darkness.Someone was following them. "Move," Vivian whispered, and they ran again. The moon barely showed through the thick canopy, and every tree looked identical while every shadow seemed to shift. Vivian kept one hand around the small flashlight she had taken from the safe house, but its weak beam did little against the darkness. She didn't dare look back if Damian's men were close, she feared her legs would stop working. Elena suddenly caught her arm and pointed ahead."There!" A narrow path appeared between two rows of trees, and Vivian followed without asking questions. They pushed throug

"We need to leave. Now."Elena's voice cut through the silence of the cabin, sharp and urgent. Vivian looked up from the photograph, her heart lurching. The four words on the back still burned in her mind. Find me. I'm waiting."What's wrong?" Vivian asked, already reaching for her bag."I saw something. A car. Parked down the road." Elena's face was pale. "It wasn't there before."Vivian's blood ran cold. She crossed to the window, peering through the dusty glass. A black sedan sat at the edge of the tree line, its engine off, its windows dark. No one got out. No one moved. But someone was in there. She could feel it."Get your things," she said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her chest. "We're leaving."They moved quickly, gathering their few belongings. Vivian stuffed the photograph, the letter, and the paper with the name Riverside into her bag. They slipped out the back door, disappearing into the thick woods behind the cabin. They didn't stop until the cabin was no

"You came."The voice came from the shadows of the old church, soft and trembling. Vivian stepped through the creaking wooden door, her heart pounding against her ribs. The building was dark, lit only by the pale moonlight streaming through stained glass windows. Dust motes danced in the thin beams of light, and the air smelled of old wood and forgotten prayers. She'd come alone, just as the note instructed. Elena had wanted to follow, but Vivian had refused. She didn't know who was waiting for her. She didn't know if it was a trap. But she had to take the risk."Who's there?" she called out, her voice echoing through the empty pews.A figure emerged from the shadows near the altar. Small. Hunched. An old woman with silver hair and eyes that held a lifetime of secrets. She wore a faded coat and clutched a worn leather bag to her chest. She moved slowly, her joints stiff with age, but her gaze was sharp, missing nothing."You look just like her," the woman said, her voice crackling lik

"Run."Elena's voice was barely a whisper, but it cut through the night like a blade. Vivian didn't hesitate. She grabbed Elena's hand and pulled her away from the edge of the pier, her heart pounding so loud she could barely hear anything else. The wooden planks groaned beneath their feet as they sprinted toward the shore.Damian's silhouette stood motionless at the end of the pier. He didn't move. He didn't speak. He just watched them, like a predator waiting for its prey to make a mistake. The moonlight caught his face, illuminating the cold smile that spread across his lips. He knew they were running. He knew they had nowhere to go.They reached the end of the pier and veered left, disappearing into the thick brush that lined the shoreline. Branches scratched at Vivian's arms, drawing thin lines of blood across her skin, but she pushed through, pulling Elena with her. The pain was nothing compared to the fear clawing at her chest."Where are we going?" Elena gasped, her voice ragg

"You came."The voice drifted out of the darkness, soft and trembling. Vivian spun around, her heart slamming against her ribs. The old pier stretched out before her, wooden planks weathered by years of wind and salt. Moonlight spilled across the water, casting silver ripples on the surface. She'd come alone, just as the note instructed. She didn't know who she was meeting. She didn't know if she could trust them. But she had to know the truth. The note had been too specific, too personal, to ignore. Whoever sent it knew about the orphanage. Knew about Damian. Knew about the life she'd been running from."Who's there?" she called out, her voice echoing across the empty water.A figure emerged from the shadows beneath the pier. Small. Wrapped in a worn coat that hung loose on her thin frame. Dark hair falling across a pale face that looked like it hadn't seen sunlight in years. She looked young, maybe eighteen or nineteen, with wide eyes that held a lifetime of fear. Her hands were cla

"You look like you've been through a war."Chloe's voice was gentle as she dabbed antiseptic on the scrapes covering Vivian's arms. The motel bathroom was small, the light flickering overhead, but the warmth of her friend's presence made it bearable. Vivian winced as the cotton touched her skin, but she didn't pull away."I feel like I have," she admitted, her voice hoarse from exhaustion. "Every part of me hurts."Chloe finished cleaning the wounds and wrapped a bandage around Vivian's wrist. "You need rest. Real rest. You've been running on empty for days.""I can't rest. Not while—""Not while what?" Chloe cut her off, her voice firm but kind. "Not while you're bleeding and exhausted and barely able to stand? You're no good to anyone like this, Vivian. You need to heal."Vivian wanted to argue, but the words died in her throat. Chloe was right. She was running on fumes, her body screaming for rest. She'd been so focused on finding the truth that she'd forgotten to take care of hers
