When the old man who had been standing a few feet away suddenly moved with unusual speed.Kieran was startled. The old man straightened up immediately. And with swift motion, he brought a dagger. The steel flashed in the sunlight.Kieran had no time to react let alone pull out his own weapon. Stunned, he watched as the tiny sharp blade approached. The old man made a viper-like motion. As he lunged forward, Kieran's right knee was deeply pierced by the dagger. Kieran gasped as a searing, sharp pain erupted through his leg. It was a fatal blow. The old man swung the dagger with trained accuracy, cutting Kieran's horse's leg before Kieran could even start to comprehend the pain. The strong horse let out a fearful, high-pitched sound. The weight of the animal caused the leg to give out and buckle. The huge beast moaned horribly and fell sideways, hitting the ground with a heavy crash. Two weeks later The sun's golden rays shone on the broad dusty road as it stood high in the clear sky that afternoon. Alpha Kieran and his trusted men were on a very important mission. They had a long and difficult journey through the center of the region to get to the Elder's quarters. The only sounds were the creaking of a heavily loaded carriage and the steady thud of hooves on the ground. And the air was heavy with the smell of dry earth and pine. On his strong black horse, Kieran rode as the leader, a dominant presence. He was alert and his gaze was fixed on the surroundings. With grim and determined expressions, his men trailed behind him in a close formation. The sturdy wooden carriage at the center of their convoy was groaning under the weight of their valuable cargo. The gold pieces of the packs were gathered in one location. And the bags of gold pieces inside clinked and moved with each bump in the road. Marcus, the carriage driver, was a young broad-shouldered warrio

His habit of looking over his shoulder resulted from trying to observe his surroundings. He saw no one behind him and focused on the path ahead. When he left the Elder's quarters, the other warriors, the ones he now walked among as an imposter, hardly looked at him again. They thought he was part of them. And probably leaving for an important task.Their trust served as his shield and they only saw the man in the uniform. He thought of the warrior he had killed, the one whose uniform he was wearing now. A sharp, cold pang of regret tore through him. With the loud laughter and the chatter of some men, the tavern was a wild place.Daemon ignored them. His eyes were fixed on the tavern's double doors, which looked straight down on the elders’ council quarters.Even at this distance, he could see everything from the Elders’ council quarters. He could see those who passed through the council's entrance, every horse that came and went, and every man who entered and exited. The minutes passed slowly. It was starting to get dark as he waited patiently.Horses started to arrive, their hooves tapping the cobbles as their riders got off with a sense of dignity.Their cloaks and tunics, which were of a finer weave than those worn in the tavern, demonstrated their influence and power.
