CHAPTER 115: Not anymore

Hurt. Pain. Betrayal from a loved one. I had experienced them all. But nothing had pierced as deep as what I was feeling as I was looking at those photographs. The pictures trembled in my hands, my eyes devouring them with a disbelief that quickly dissolved into something very sharp and cutting, something that felt very much like betrayal. I had suspected that something like this could happen; was happening. But to see proof of it was harder to digest.

My throat tightened as though a hand was clamped around it, strangling me, making it impossible to breathe. There he was, Zachary, my husband, my tormentor, my heartache and my salvation, my undoing, entangled with another woman, with Julia.

Mary’s gasp echoed beside me, soft, sharp but filled with a mixture of shock and something else… hesitation, disbelief. I was so lost in anguish and pain that I had not registered the moment she leaned in and glimpsed the pictures in my grip. She leaned closer now, squinti

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 117: Off-balance

CHAPTER 117: Off-balance The last of the clients filed out of the private dining room, their voices still echoing faintly in the corridor as though the deals struck between us had not struck their hold with them. The door had barely clicked shut behind them when I leaned forward, pressing my fingers hard against my temple. A dull throb pounded behind my eyes, sharper than it should have been. I remained seated, one leg crossed over the other, and one hand pressed loosely against the armrest of the leather couch, the other holding the now half-empty glass of wine I had sipped from cautiously during the course of the meeting. Usually, I never favoured anything other than a glass of water during work meetings, but today was different. The room was quiet again, save for the faint clinking of cutlery being cleared away by the waitstaff and the occasional shifting of my guard near the doorway. I pulled my phone from my pocket and scrolled through the contacts. I got to the number I was lo

CHAPTER 116: Cold resolveMary disagreed. “Hush now, child. You shouldn’t—”I cut in, shaking my head, “You tried to warn me to be careful, to guard myself, because it might not end well with me chasing after someone like him. And you were right, Mary. You were right. I should have listened to you instead of following my stupid girlish fantasies.”I know that Zachary and I only got married because of what happened with Vance. But I knew deep down that it was all a chain reaction that was triggered off because of my infatuation with him. After that night, I resented him and wanted to forget him and also do something rebellious that would get his attention. Hence, I accepted to date Vance. It was also partially the reason I had accepted the speed wedding with him. If only I had taken Mary’s advice, then I wouldn't be feeling the pain I was now.“You couldn't have predicted it better, Mary. Look at me now. What has all of this brought me but endless pain, heartache, and misery? What's mo

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 114: Poison photographs

CHAPTER 114: Poison photographs Mary tilted her head, clearly unconvinced. “And you are his wife. He shouldn't be too busy to inquire how you've been. Too busy to send you a word? A call?”Her words reopened the wound I’d been trying to cover. I pulled my hand back gently, forcing another smile. “Please, Mary. Don’t worry about me. Truly. I’ll be fine. I probably just caught a bug. A few more days, and it’ll pass. And if it doesn't, then I'd go see a doctor. Please, don't worry too much. It's really nothing.”But she still did. Her gaze lingered on me, carefully scrutinising me with a strange look in her eyes. Her attention was suspicious, almost maternal. It was both comforting and unbearable to be under her scrutiny. Before she could press me further, one of the younger maids hurried into the room, a small, neatly wrapped package in her hands. She looked nervous, her eyes darting between me and Mary as she extended it. I was nervous too. I thought it was another anonymous letter.

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 113: Seafood disaster

CHAPTER 113: Seafood disaster It turned out that Zachary had been right. I might have to go to the hospital. I had been telling myself for days now that I was fine, that the nausea and fatigue that had slowly but surely crept up on me and plagued my body for days, was nothing more than a stomach bug that would soon pass. However, when I stepped into the kitchen that morning, and the heavy, briny scent of seafood rushed toward me, I knew at once I was fooling myself. I might have to take that trip to the hospital. My stomach rolled, twisting sharply as if it wanted to rebel against me, my stomach heaved, my gut rolled, and I had to press a hand against the counter for balance.Mary, who was standing beside the maid supervising breakfast preparations, turned her head sharply. Her eyes were sharp, she was obviously surprised to see me out of my room where I had holed myself up since Zachary’s departure three days ago. Her shrewd eyes, so used to noticing the tiniest details in this hou

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 112: Loving Zachary

CHAPTER 112: Loving Zachary I was still asleep on that quiet morning, when it arose with merciless insistence and dragged me out of sleep. My body jolted, and before I could even open my eyes to register the soft light spilling through the curtains, my stomach twisted violently. My eyes shut open and I pressed a hand over my mouth, stumbling out of bed, my nightdress tangling around my thighs as I hurried toward the bathroom. The bitter taste had already climbed up my throat, and I barely managed to reach the toilet before everything I had eaten the night before came back with a force that left me shaking.Behind me, I heard the sound of heavy footsteps, and a voice that made my blood run cold and hot all at once.“Madelyn?”I lifted my head from where I was crouched over the toilet bowl hurling out the contents of my stomach, and my heart pounded at the unmistakable sound of Zachary’s voice. Tucking my hair behind my ear, I turned my head sharply and there he was, standing in the d
