CHAPTER THREE : RIVAL

last update Last Updated: 2025-07-22 14:22:41

Then their chants changed to what they called me—“Rival, Rival, Rival.”

What the fuck was this man thinking giving me that goddamned name?

But it sounded cool.

They didn’t have to take it too far to call me an enemy.

I just stood there, ready to take in whatever it was that they were preparing for me.

Not less than thirty minutes, the chant died down and I looked back and there stood who I knew very well was my opponent. No need to tell me who he really was. Then the stupid announcement was made again and they chanted his name—“Nikita... Nikita... Nikita.” The chant went on and on, and he was just jumping from one end of the ring to the other. Hmm. He really was enjoying it.

The chants died down, giving the announcer the opportunity to talk.

“Fighting rules, boys: first to kill wins... and first to die loses,” he said.

The crowd started cheering.

This is so cruel and am not a boy Jesus.

I turned my gaze to who I was to challenge, and I prayed secretly to my parents that they should personally accept my soul when it arrives.

No need to beat around the bush, they clearly knew who was gonna die, and that was me.

Don’t be mad at me. I’m proud to say that.

The announcer gave the signal and they blew the trumpet, signaling that it was time for the fight to start.

I just stood there and took one last gaze at the crowd. Then I turned to see my opponent and something hit my face and I lost balance and fell down immediately.

“Ouch.”

That was kind of painful, low-key.

The crowd immediately went wild chanting his name—“NIKITA... NIKITA... NIKITA.”

He turned to show off, like acknowledging them.

I used that opportunity and ......nahhh, I didn’t venture towards him.

I’m not that dumb.

I used the opportunity and breathed in back the oxygen that escaped my mouth when I was almost hit to a coma.

I used my hand to support myself up and I stood immediately, but my leg was visibly shaking.

All this effect was just from a blow, one more and I swear I might visit the world underneath us.

The man standing before me looked like someone who ate three square meals before coming here.

I gave him time to be done with his show-off.

To be sincere, I really appreciated the crowd. At least that was the little they could do to help me, and I noticed that was the only way to distract him.

When the chant finally died down, he turned his gaze right back at me and started smiling.

What the fuck is he smiling for right now?

Bro, just take me down and save yourself the stress.

He immediately ran towards me to hit me down, but I was fast to move to the other side of the ring and he hit the floor.

Ouch, that must have hurt ‘cause I was sure I heard him wince.

So much for being called NIKITA.

I didn’t say it loud, though.

And I might not be a boxing-boy kind of person, but I knew one thing for sure that you don’t venture to take down your opponent by the waist when they are alert.

Maybe he never thought of that.

I gave him time to breathe, and he stood up immediately and straightened his shoulder.

Oh no. I think he’s gonna knock me out real good.

I didn’t attack. I watched him.

One thing I was good at is that I can learn anything by just watching it.

I know it might sound crazy, but it would really help me this time.

He took slow and steady steps close to me.

I stood on my ground. I didn’t move a muscle.

I wanted to see what he got, though the first blow was enough to teach me a lesson.

He slowly turned his hand into a fist and came up to me and I dodged it.

Ha. Don’t be surprised. I’m really good at defendi..

Ouch.

This guy just hit my nose.

Ahhh.

I can’t even wish this pain on my enemies.

So much for someone who was shouting back at a lawyer.

I staggered backwards and used my hand to support myself first.

I wasn’t breathing through only my mouth, but my ear was inclusive, it can’t be generally useless.

I looked up at him and he was standing at the top of the ring showing off to the crowd.

This is so not legal.

That was when I noticed something drip and fall to the floor.

It was dark red in color.

You got to be kidding me.

I looked at the ceiling of the ring to know where that fell from.

Yeah. Almost forgot it was open.

And I touched my nose... oh my God..

Jesus, please don’t tell me that was my blood.

Uhh c’mon.

I can’t be losing blood when I’m hungry.

I stood there for some moment, at least regain my posture.

I can’t be standing zigzag when I’m fighting.

I mean, at least to save myself the pieces of dignity I didn’t bother to pick up when he hit my nose.

The chant died down and he turned to look at me.

His face didn’t have any expression on, like he was ready to take me out once and for all.

One of the things I could vividly remember from the time my parents were still alive, they once said, “Living is already a risk... you got to risk to still like it.”

It’s not like I’m saying they were wrong.

I mean, they had that particular mindset when they started working for the mafia.

And that particular stuff is what I’m gonna do just now.

Nikita, as he was called, ventured towards me and tried to hit me again.

This time I targeted right, yeah, his ribs and struck it, and he staggered backwards and cursed.

And I looked around...

Then I heard the chants of my name....

“Rival... Rival... Rival...”

Oh my God, that feels so good.

  • THE HIDDEN RIVAL   CHAPTER ELEVEN : JUST NOTICE.

RIVAL’S POV Something snapped inside me the moment I walked out of Boris’ office, it was not panic or not fear, fear was the last thing I was feeling now, what I felt now is Focus, The kind that kicks in when you realize you’ve stepped onto a battlefield, and there’s no backing out. The only way out is through it and to even know that your enemy was watching your every single move. But for me to focus first, I needed to know what the fuck I was actually dealing with, I wasn’t going to kill anyone blindly, not even if it meant Boris would personally break every bone in my body, nah am kidding but I needed leverage, a plan or at least a truth I could twist into armor. So I waited until the next shift change when guards switched duty post, and When they got sloppy. When the lights dimmed, and most recruits passed out from fatigue or hunger, and when am sure the CCTV camera are turned off for thirty minutes like they do daily. Shadow had dozed off, blade still half-hid under his pi

  • THE HIDDEN RIVAL   CHAPTER ELEVEN : BIG STEP

RIVAL’S POV I woke up to the sound of someone screaming but it was not mine or that of Shadow’s,it was Someone else, Someone outside maybe a person they were torturing. The sound drilled through the concrete walls like a dying animal choking on its last breath. For a second, I thought I was dreaming. But Shadow was already sitting up on his slab, tying his laces like he expected this shit. “What the fuck—” I started. “Quiet.” I pinned my mouth immediately. He moved to the door, pressed his ear against the metal, eyes narrowed. “They’re dragging someone,” he muttered. “along the Left corridor.” Another scream tore through the silence, and I got off the slab slowly, my heart was already beating abnormal. “Why?” “They probably broke rule three,” Shadow said, straightening, like this was a normal thing.... father Lord what did I get myself into.... “What’s rule three?” I asked him. “Don’t talk to ghosts.” I blinked at him. “Come again?” But he didn’t answer me Instead, he

  • THE HIDDEN RIVAL   CHAPTER NINE: OBSERVE

RIVAL’S POV : The next morning slapped harder than a belt on wet skin. The metal door creaked open like it was groaning in pain, and before I could ask what now, a thick boot kicked against the bars. “Get your ass up.” Yeah, ‘good morning’ would’ve been too polite. I blinked, still lying on the cold concrete slab they called a bed, My whole body ached from the last match even my soul was limping, you don't wanna know how I walked like, But somehow, hearing my name chanted the other day was still litting a beautiful spark in my chest. Shadow was already up, lacing his boots like he’d been waiting since midnight. “Where the hell are we going?” I asked, voice scratchy from sleep and disuse. “Class.” I scoffed. “Class? What the hell is this? Murder University?” Shadow didn’t laugh, just stared at me, of course he didn’t. “They’ll teach you how to survive. Whether you listen or not is up to you.” He stood and tossed me a shirt. “Wear that and be fast we’re late.”

  • THE HIDDEN RIVAL   CHAPTER EIGHT: SETUP

Rival’s POV : I swear if I spent one more hour staring at Shadow doing fucking squats in the corner like a prison monk, I was gonna bash my own head in. “This place is sucking the life outta me,” I muttered, kicking a bottle cap across the floor. It clanged against the bars like even it wanted out. Shadow didn’t flinch. Just kept going. Like he was built from silence and suppressed rage. “No fights today either?” I called over, mostly out of desperation. He didn’t respond. Cool. So I was stuck in the cage with a mute ninja. Great. The boredom was eating me alive. I needed something. Anything. Movement. Noise. Even a slap to the face would’ve been nice. So naturally, I did what any curious bastard would do. I got up and wandered. Shadow didn’t stop me. He didn’t even glance up. Just muttered, “Don’t poke the wrong hornet’s nest.” “Noted,” I said, already halfway down the hallway. The base was quieter than usual. No fights. No drills. Just murmurs and footstep

  • THE HIDDEN RIVAL   TOO FUCKING LATE

Rival’s POV You ever get your name screamed like a war chant and feel like you just made it to the damn Olympics? Yeah man...That was me last night. “RIVAL! RIVAL! RIVAL!” Still gives me chills. And not the bad kind, The kinda chills that make you puff your chest a bit when no one’s looking. But then morning came like a slap to the face. I blinked up at the ceiling of the cage they call a “room,” arms sprawled, one leg over the edge of the thin-ass mattress that felt like it was stuffed with broken bricks. Shadow was already up, Guy doesn’t sleep, I swear. Just crouched by the window, hood over his face like a gothic gargoyle. He tilted his head a bit and muttered, “You're awake.” “No shit,” I groaned, dragging myself up. My ribs still ached from last night’s ass-whooping, but I was alive. That counted for something here. “No fights today,” Shadow said like he read my mind. “Use it well.” “Use it how?” “To survive longer.” I stared. “Damn, you always gotta so

  • THE HIDDEN RIVAL   CHAPTER SIX : WAIT WHAT CAGE ?

Ughh… my brain was a fuckin’ cement mixer. I blinked once nope twice actually. The lights above me were flickering like they were powered by regret. I groaned and sat up, only to realize.... oh, come on, was I in a damn cage? A real, actual cage after fighting that monster the least they could do was give me a nice bed but nope. No mattress or even a pillow. Just cold concrete and rusted iron bars like I’d just been tossed into a zoo for mentally unstable badasses. I rubbed the back of my neck, wincing. My entire body felt like I had been hit by a truck, then dragged fifty miles by its tires. Every inch of me screamed from that fight with Natalya. That man fought like a demon with rabies. Pretty sure I saw Satan tapping out in the corner halfway through. But… I won. Didn’t I? That flash of the crowd screaming, the blood in my mouth, the sound of his body hitting the ground… then everything went black. Now, here I was. Caged like an animal, dehydrated, starved, sore and
