CHAPTER 1: MY BIRTHDAY BETRAYAL

last update publish date: 2026-10-17 03:50:06

The night I caught my fiancé with my cousin, I was carrying the birthday cake I had made for him.

I had decorated it after my shift at the perfume boutique in SoHo, piping careful white flowers around the edge because Daniel used to say I could make ordinary things beautiful. I had imagined him laughing when he saw it, pulling me into his arms, promising that the next year would be better than the last.

I had not expected to find Vanessa in his apartment.

The door stood half open. My cousin sat beside Daniel on the sofa, her fingers curled around his wrist and his mouth pressed to hers. Champagne waited on the coffee table beside a small velvet box.

I knew that box. Two weeks earlier, Daniel had asked whether I preferred gold or silver. I had gone home that night and searched engagement rings until midnight, smiling at my phone like a fool.

He kissed Vanessa again.

The cake slipped in my hands. A little frosting smeared across the cardboard lid. I stared at that smear because it was easier than looking at them.

I pushed the door open.

They separated, but not quickly enough to hide the truth. Vanessa grabbed her glass. Daniel stood, his expression shifting from surprise to irritation, as if I had interrupted something inconvenient instead of discovering the end of five years.

"Elena," he said.

"Happy birthday to me," I said. My voice came out thinner than I wanted.

"Please let me explain," Vanessa said.

"Start with why you are wearing my red dress," I said.

Daniel sighed. "Please do not make this worse than it has to be."

"How long?" I asked.

"It is complicated," he said.

"No. It is a question."

He rubbed the back of his neck. "Three months."

I felt the floor tilt. "Did you ever love me?"

He looked away. "I cared about you. But things changed."

"What changed?"

"Vanessa understands the kind of life I want."

I glanced at the velvet box. "And I did not?"

"You make everything a struggle, Elena," he said. "I am tired of feeling guilty because you are always worried about money."

"I was trying to build a life with you," I said.

"And I do not want that life anymore," he said.

Vanessa reached for my hand. I pulled away so sharply her fingers closed on empty air.

"Do not touch me," I said.

"I never meant to hurt you," she whispered.

"You had three months to stop," I said.

Daniel picked up his jacket. "I will send your things back. We can talk when you are calmer."

He was ending five years and still believed he could decide when I was allowed to feel something.

"Keep the things," I said. "Keep the promises too."

I put the cake on the nearest table and walked out before either of them could say another word. The velvet box stayed behind me, a tiny promise that had never been meant for me.

My phone rang in the hallway. Mom.

I wiped my face with my sleeve. "Hi, Mama."

"Happy birthday, my girl." I heard the familiar clatter of trays from the bakery in Seabrook. "The doctor called again, Elena. They need the surgery deposit before they can confirm the date."

My throat tightened. Thirty thousand dollars. The number had followed me for weeks.

"I am working on it," I said.

"You are always working on something for somebody else," she said, trying to sound cheerful. "Promise me you are eating properly."

"I promise," I said.

It was a lie, but I could not add my heartbreak to everything she was carrying. When we hung up, I looked at my balance. Rent was overdue, groceries had to last until payday, and my landlord had warned me he would not wait another week.

At my Brooklyn apartment, I opened my laptop beside the rent notice. One email still gave me a reason to keep moving.

HART GROUP FINAL INTERVIEW - Monday, 9:00 a.m. - Executive Assistant Position.

The salary could help pay for the surgery. I could not let Daniel take my future along with my trust.

I stood before my cracked mirror. My eyes were swollen, my cheeks pale. I looked like someone who had begged to be loved and been told she was asking for too much.

I was tired of begging.

For one night, I wanted to feel wanted without proving I was worthkeeping. I wanted to remember I was still a woman someone could desire.

I changed into a simple black dress, brushed my hair, and took a cab to The Pierre. The bar was quiet, low lights and soft piano. I told myself I would have one drink and leave.

Then I noticed the man sitting alone at the far end.

He wore a perfectly fitted black suit. His dark hair was neat, his shoulders broad, and his grey eyes were cool enough to discourage questions. Yet something tired rested beneath his composed expression.

His gaze met mine. He did not look away.

I stood before courage could abandon me and crossed the room. Up close, he was even more striking. His attention settled on me without wandering, and for the first time that night, I did not feel invisible.

"Are you waiting for someone?" I asked.

"No," he said. His voice was low and measured. "Are you?"

"Not anymore," I said.

My hands were cold.

"One night," I said. "No names. No promises. We leave everything else outside that door."

He studied me. His expression did not soften, but his attention sharpened.

"Are you sure that is what you want from me?" he asked.

I lifted my chin. "Yes. One night. That is all."

He set his glass down, and the quiet between us changed. My heart was loud enough I was sure he could hear it.

I did not know his name. By Monday morning, I would discover that one night with him was only the very beginning.

The deadline was tomorrow. The words followed me into the kitchen. I kept calculating what we needed and how many hours remained before the hospital expected the deposit.Damian noticed me staring at the unpaid notice."Come here," he said softly."I am here," I said."Your body is. Your mind is somewhere else," I said.Flour dusted his wrist from helping with the morning rolls. Shame tightened my throat."I cannot let you solve every problem I have," I said."I am not asking you to hand me your problems," he said. He turned the notice facedown. "I am asking you to let me stand beside you while you decide what to do," he said.I trusted him when he spoke like that."I need to check something at the old house," he said. "My father left boxes there. I promised myself I would sort them while I was back in town," he said."Can I come?" I asked. His expression softened. "If you want to," he said.I wanted to understand the place that had shaped him.The house stood beyond a low stone wall,

I woke to the smell of coffee and the feeling of being held without having to ask.For several seconds, I stayed still. Damian lay behind me, his arm wrapped around my waist, his breathing warm against my neck. Rain tapped gently against the window, but the storm had lost its fury.I turned carefully in his arms. His hair was untidy, his face relaxed, and the hard lines that usually made him look untouchable had disappeared. Here, in my mother's small house, he looked like a man who had finally allowed himself to rest.I brushed a strand of hair from his forehead. His eyes opened."Are you inspecting me, Miss Rose?" he asked."Trying to understand how the terrifying Damian Hart sleeps with his mouth slightly open," I said.He caught my hand and kissed my palm. "Tell anyone, and I will deny everything," he said.I laughed against his chest."What?" I asked."I like waking up beside you," he said. The simplicity of his answer unsettled me. I was used to love arriving with promises that

Damian lowered my mother onto the bakery bench while I fumbled for my phone."Mom, stay with me," I said. I crouched beside her, my hands shaking so badly I could barely unlock the screen. "Please, look at me."Her eyes opened, unfocused at first. "I told you I was fine," she said."You fainted," I said."I sat down rather suddenly," she said.Even then, she tried to make me smile. It nearly broke me.Damian knelt on her other side. "Martha, can you tell me if you have pain in your chest?" he asked."Just pressure. It will pass," she said. His face tightened. "Elena, the doctor. Now," he said. When Mom tried to stand, he offered his arm. "Let us wait until the doctor gets here," he said. She eyed him. "You are very handsome to be giving orders in my bakery," she said."I was told not to give orders," he said."Then you are learning quickly," she said. The doctor arrived within fifteen minutes. After checking Mom, he said the episode could be connected to her heart condition and insist

  • THE HOOKUP THAT RUINED ME   CHAPTER 13: THE ROAD BACK TO SEABROOK

Damian had the car brought around before I finished packing.Thirty thousand dollars stood between her and the surgery she needed. The bakery stood between her and the life she had built. Now I was taking the man who signed my paychecks into the middle of it."You are doing that thing again," Damian said."What thing?" I asked."Trying to carry every problem before anyone has offered to help," he said."I did not ask you to solve anything," I said."I know," he said. "That is why I am asking to come."His answer softened something in me. I had spent years teaching myself not to depend on anyone. Then Damian Hart had started making room for me."Mom needs this medicine, and the bakery needs money. I cannot pretend everything is fine just because I have you," I said."I would never ask you to pretend that," he said. "But you do not have to pretend you are fine with me."I lifted my chin. "You are not going to arrive in Seabrook and start ordering people around," I said."Would I do that

  • THE HOOKUP THAT RUINED ME   CHAPTER 12: YOUR ARMS FEEL LIKE HOME

The first thing I learned about living with Damian Hart was that the man who could silence a boardroom could not find his own coffee. I watched him open three cupboards. "You live here. How do you not know where anything is?" I asked. "I usually have coffee brought to me," he said. He wore grey sweatpants and a white T-shirt, his hair still damp. Without his suit, he looked less like the man whose name sat on skyscrapers and more like someone I could fall asleep beside. I handed him a mug with one spoonful of sugar. He tasted it. "You hate it," I said. "I am deciding whether honesty is worth sleeping alone tonight," he said. I laughed. "You are sleeping alone if you keep talking like that," I said. He stepped closer. "May I kiss you before you threaten me with solitude again?" he said. I nodded. He kissed me slowly, without the hungry urgency of our first night. This kiss asked me to stay. "That sounded like a yes," he said. "Do not ruin it by becoming smug," I

My mother was waiting for surgery, and the hospital needed thirty thousand dollars before they would proceed. The payment plan I had requested was refused."I can pay part now," I said into the phone. "Please. My mother has just come through a crisis.""I am sorry, Miss Rose. The account must be settled."The call ended. Pride could not protect my mother.Damian crouched in front of me."Let me cover the deposit," he said. "We can put it in writing as a loan in your name. You can repay one dollar a month until you are able. No interest. No deadline."I stared at him. "You think that makes it easier?""No. I think it gives you a choice when the hospital has left you with very few.""You could solve this with one signature. Then what? Every time I disagree with you, will I remember I owe you thirty thousand dollars?"His jaw tightened. "You will never owe me obedience.""You cannot promise that for the man you become when you are angry."He did not look away. "Then put that in writing t
