CHAPTER 3: A NIGHT WITHOUT TOMORROW

He held my gaze after I told him I was staying. When the elevator doors opened, he led me down a quiet corridor to a suite overlooking the city. He unlocked the door and stepped aside so I could enter first. I was too aware of him standing behind me, waiting for me to decide whether the night would continue.

No names. No promises. One night.

He offered me his hand.

The hours that followed belonged to us alone. He was patient when I grew quiet and drew me close when my nerves made me retreat. I had expected desire, not the comfort of being asked what I wanted.

When he kissed me, he never treated my silence as permission. When I hesitated, he waited. I was not used to being given room to change my mind. With Daniel, even my smallest objections had become arguments I was expected to lose. Here, the silence held no demand. I could choose the next step without being punished for it, and that freedom made me brave enough to stay.

Later, we lay beneath the sheets while Manhattan glittered through the curtains. His fingers rested around mine, tracing the small lines across my palm.

"What do you do when you are not rescuing strangers from bad nights?" he asked.

"I work at a perfume shop. I have a marketing degree and an interview on Monday."

"That sounds like two different lives."

"It feels like three. The woman I studied to become, the woman who works extra shifts, and the daughter trying to keep her mother alive."

His hand stilled. "Your mother is ill?"

"She needs heart surgery. The deposit is thirty thousand dollars before Friday."

He looked at me. "You have been carrying that alone?"

"I have to. There is nobody else."

"My father left when I was ten," I added. "Mom kept our bakery open in Seabrook even when she was exhausted. I remember finding her crying in the storeroom and pretending I had not seen it. I promised myself I would never make her feel abandoned too."

He did not offer money or tell me everything would be fine. He simply held my hand again, his thumb brushing once over my knuckles.

"You should not have to be strong every minute," he said.

"Do not be kind to me because you feel sorry for me."

"I do not feel sorry for you."

"Then what do you feel?"

His gaze lowered to our joined hands. "I have not decided what to call it yet."

For once, I had no answer ready. He brushed a strand of hair from my face, and the tenderness frightened me more than his earlier intensity. I wanted to know whether he would remember this night after sunrise.

Instead, I rested my head against his chest and listened to his heartbeat until sleep came.

I woke before sunrise with his arm around my waist. Monday returned in pieces: the interview at nine, the rent that was already late, the surgery deposit due Friday, and the life waiting beyond these windows.

My dress lay on the floor, its strap torn. A white shirt lay across a chair. I pulled it on and buttoned it to my throat. The fabric smelled faintly of cedar and him.

My phone lit up beside my purse. The Hart Group recruiter reminded me to arrive early and bring my portfolio. Beneath it, my landlord demanded to know when I would pay the overdue rent.

One chance to move forward, and another threat pulling me backward.

I gathered my purse and reached for the door.

"Leaving without saying goodbye?" his voice asked behind me.

I turned. He was awake, his hair untidy, his face softer without the guarded expression he had worn at the bar.

"I thought no names meant no goodbyes," I said.

"It means I do not know what to call you. It does not mean I wanted you to disappear."

I tightened my grip on my purse. "I cannot make this into something else."

"I have not asked you to."

But his eyes made me feel that he wanted to.

He came closer, stopping before he touched me. "Take the shirt. Your dress is ruined."

"I will return it."

A faint smile touched his mouth. "Then I will have a reason to see you again."

My heart betrayed me with one hard beat.

"You will probably forget me by breakfast," I said.

"Will you forget me?"

"I have an interview," I said instead.

"So you told me last night."

"And I need this job."

"Then go and get it."

There was no mockery in his voice. He looked at me as if he believed I could walk into that room and earn my own future without anyone's help.

I opened the door, then looked back once. He stood beside the bed, watching me with an expression I could not read.

"I meant what I said last night," I told him. "One night. No promises."

"I heard you, beautiful."

The endearment followed me into the corridor and clung to my skin like his cologne.

I leaned against the wall outside his door and closed my eyes, forcing myself to breathe slowly. I had wanted to feel desired for a few hours, then return to my life untouched. Instead, I was leaving with his shirt against my skin and the unsettling sense that some part of me had stayed behind in that room with him, tangled in the sheets where he had held me all night long.

Monday mattered more than a stranger. The interview would put me in front of a hiring panel, not as a woman leaving his room, but as a candidate waiting for a job that could save my mother's life and finally let me pay our rent without begging anyone.

I had no idea what he would do when he saw me again, and I was terrified to admit what I secretly wanted him to do when he did.

My mother was waiting for surgery, and the hospital needed thirty thousand dollars before they would proceed. The payment plan I had requested was refused."I can pay part now," I said into the phone. "Please. My mother has just come through a crisis.""I am sorry, Miss Rose. The account must be settled."The call ended. Pride could not protect my mother.Damian crouched in front of me."Let me cover the deposit," he said. "We can put it in writing as a loan in your name. You can repay one dollar a month until you are able. No interest. No deadline."I stared at him. "You think that makes it easier?""No. I think it gives you a choice when the hospital has left you with very few.""You could solve this with one signature. Then what? Every time I disagree with you, will I remember I owe you thirty thousand dollars?"His jaw tightened. "You will never owe me obedience.""You cannot promise that for the man you become when you are angry."He did not look away. "Then put that in writing t

Damian was already beside the car when I ended the call with the hospital. He opened the passenger door, his expression sharp with concern."Get in, Elena. We are going to Seabrook."I climbed inside with trembling hands. He entered the address into the navigation, then covered my fingers with his."We will get there," he said."You cannot promise that.""No. But I can promise you will not face this drive alone."Rain streaked the windshield as we left Boston behind. I called the bakery twice, but no one answered. Each unanswered ring tightened the fear around my chest."Drive faster," I whispered."I am already pushing the limit. Breathe in for me.""I cannot breathe when my mother might be dying.""Then take one breath at a time. For me."I tried, but the air caught in my throat. I had spent years believing that depending on someone was the first step toward being disappointed. Yet when Damian reached for my hand, I held on as if his touch could keep the worst from happening."Elena

The morning we left for Boston, I told myself the trip was about work. I needed to prove I belonged at Hart Group for reasons beyond the night we had shared. Still, when Damian opened the passenger door for me, my heart reacted as if the gesture meant something. "You could have sent a driver," I said, settling my bag at my feet. "I could have." "But you came yourself." His eyes met mine. "Would you rather I had not?" "I would rather know what you want from me." "Then ask me when you are ready to hear the answer." We stopped once on the drive. Damian returned with coffee and a warm pastry from the bakery counter. He placed them beside me without a word. "You remembered," I said. "I remember what matters to you." For the first time, I wondered whether the man who controlled entire boardrooms could remember a small preference without expecting anything back. By noon, we were inside the Boston conference room. I had prepared the campaign presentation carefully, but the senior e

Daniel stood beside my desk, holding our engagement ring in his open palm. The sight of it brought back my birthday, the room where I had found him with Vanessa, and the awful moment when every promise I trusted turned into a lie."Five minutes, Elena," he said. "That is all I am asking.""You had years.""Can we talk somewhere private?""No. You came here because you wanted to see me. You do not get to decide how this conversation happens."He lowered his voice. "I made a mistake.""You chose Vanessa while I was standing in the next room. You humiliated me. There is a difference between making a mistake and making a choice that destroys someone who trusted you."He looked down at the ring. "I ended things with her. I want to fix what I destroyed.""You cannot undo what happened by ending it with her now.""I still love you, Elena."The words landed without the power they once had. They meant little without honesty behind them."You loved that I stayed," I said. "You loved that I kept

The next morning, I arrived at Hart Group determined to prove that a message had not changed anything. He was already in the office when I stepped out of the elevator. He looked up from a file, and his expression shifted when he saw me."Good morning, Elena.""Good morning.""I got your message last night.""That was not an invitation to discuss it in the hallway.""Understood. I will wait until you choose to discuss it."I buried myself in work, revising the presentation and sending updated figures to the team. Still, my attention kept drifting toward the man behind the glass.Around noon, Sade appeared beside my desk carrying two coffees and a paper bag.She opened the bag. The smell of warm pastry drifted between us. "Eat something before you turn into one of those people who survives on ambition and caffeine.""I had breakfast.""Coffee is not breakfast, Elena." She grinned. "Now, how was dinner?""How do you know about dinner?""My brother spent half the morning looking far too p

  • THE HOOKUP THAT RUINED ME   CHAPTER 6: THE DANGER OF WANTING HIM

I woke up thinking about Damian Hart, which was becoming an irritating habit. His message from last night remained on my phone."I hope you will let me cook for you again. Next time, tell me what you love, and I will try to make it."I read it twice before putting my phone facedown. My mother needed surgery. My rent was overdue. My new job was the first real chance I had to change our circumstances. Those things deserved my attention, not the memory of Damian barefoot in his kitchen, smiling when I teased him about the garlic. Especially not the way I had wanted him to kiss me.By the time I reached Hart Group, I had made a decision. I would behave like a professional woman who had never spent a night in the arms of a man she barely knew. I would do my work, keep my distance, and stop giving one man so much power over my thoughts. The decision lasted until the lobby doors opened.Damian stood near reception in a charcoal suit and white shirt. His gaze found mine immediately. For one d
