CHAPTER 4: MY ONE NIGHT STAND IS MY BOSS

last update publish date: 2026-10-17 15:46:50

Monday arrived with rain against my window and a message from my landlord.

Pay the overdue rent by Friday, or I will begin eviction.

My mother needed thirty thousand dollars for heart surgery before Friday, and Hart Group was my last chance at a salary that could change everything. I dressed in my best black skirt and cream blouse, pinned my hair back, and left Brooklyn before fear could stop me.

At reception, a woman with a dark ponytail checked her tablet.

"Elena Rose?"

"Yes. I am here for the executive assistant interview."

"I am Sade." She offered me a coffee. "You look like you have been fighting a war since breakfast. Drink this before you faint on our expensive carpet."

I took the cup with both hands. The heat steadied me.

The interview room had glass walls and three people waiting with copies of my resume. I sat opposite them, portfolio on my knees, trying to ignore the tremor in my fingers.

One interviewer frowned at my resume. "Your experience is mostly retail. This role supports a CEO who expects precision, discretion, and long hours. Why should we take a chance on you?"

"Because I know how to listen before I react," I said. "I can manage pressure without making it someone else's problem. I learn quickly, I am organized, and I do not panic when several people need something at once."

I pressed my palms against my skirt beneath the table. I was not the girl who had cried in a hotel bathroom or the fiancee Daniel had discarded for my cousin. I was a graduate who had worked every extra shift, learned to stretch a paycheck, and comforted my mother over the phone when neither of us knew what to do next. Damian could unsettle me, but he could not decide my worth.

Then the door opened.

A familiar scent reached me first, cedar and clean fabric with a hint of spice. My body recognized it before my mind could. I turned, and the room tilted.

The man from The Pierre walked in wearing a charcoal suit and crisp white shirt.

Damian.

His grey eyes found mine. He did not look surprised. He held my gaze with quiet confidence.

"Mr. Hart," one interviewer said, standing quickly, "we are discussing our final candidate."

"Then let us finish." Damian took the chair at the head of the table. "Miss Rose, is it?"

My mouth went dry. "Yes."

He opened my resume. "How would you handle confidential information if it involved someone you knew personally?"

"I would protect it and follow company policy."

"And if that person had power over your future?"

"I would still tell them the truth."

"Even if honesty cost you the job?"

I thought of the hospital estimate, the rent notice, and the white shirt hidden in my bag.

"I would rather lose a job than become someone who cannot trust her own word," I said.

Something flickered in his expression. Approval, or something more dangerous.

"That is enough," he said, closing my resume. "The other interviews are cancelled."

Silence fell.

"Mr. Hart," the recruitment director said, "we still have two candidates this afternoon."

"I have made my decision." His gaze stayed on me. "Elena Rose is the candidate I want."

He turned to me.

"Ninety thousand dollars a year. Executive assistant. You start today."

I stared. "You are offering me the job?"

"I am."

"Because of what happened between us?"

His gaze sharpened. "No. Because you answered every question well. Do not insult yourself by assuming you have nothing else to offer. You earned this."

"I accept," I said, steadying my voice. "But I expect to be judged on my work."

"Good. I would be disappointed if you asked for anything less."

He called for Sade. "Move her desk into my office. Beside mine."

Sade blinked. "Beside your desk?"

"Did I stutter?"

"No, sir."

His office overlooked the city, all glass and steel. A second desk stood beside his, close enough that I could see his blotter and silver watch. Everyone on the thirty-second floor could see us.

I set my bag down, keeping the white shirt hidden inside.

I had barely opened the folder when Damian appeared beside me. His cologne drifted close and every sensible thought scattered.

"You took something of mine," he said quietly.

My cheeks warmed. "I will return the shirt. My dress was torn."

"Keep it."

"I do not need a souvenir."

His gaze lingered, making me forget the glass walls. "Then stop looking at me as if you remember every second of last night."

"I remember we agreed to no names and no promises."

"And yet you left without saying goodbye."

"You said no strings."

"I said no strings. I did not say I wanted you to disappear."

His hand settled on the edge of my desk, close to mine but not touching. The restraint felt more intimate than a kiss.

"Dinner tonight, Elena. At seven."

"Is that an order from my boss or an invitation from the man at the hotel?"

"Which answer would make you accept?"

"Neither."

He leaned closer, voice only for me. "If I were not your boss, would you still want to see me?"

"That is not a fair question," I whispered.

"Perhaps not. But I prefer an honest answer."

He walked back to his desk, leaving me with a new job, a desk beside his, and a heart that had forgotten how to behave.

I told myself I would refuse dinner. My mother needed surgery, my rent was overdue, and falling for a billionaire was a complication I could not afford.

Then my phone vibrated on the glass desk.

At seven. Wear something you feel beautiful in. Tonight, I want to meet the woman behind the reasons she keeps running.

I stared until the screen went dark.

The worst part was not that he expected me to come.

The worst part was that I was already deciding what to wear to his place.

My mother was waiting for surgery, and the hospital needed thirty thousand dollars before they would proceed. The payment plan I had requested was refused."I can pay part now," I said into the phone. "Please. My mother has just come through a crisis.""I am sorry, Miss Rose. The account must be settled."The call ended. Pride could not protect my mother.Damian crouched in front of me."Let me cover the deposit," he said. "We can put it in writing as a loan in your name. You can repay one dollar a month until you are able. No interest. No deadline."I stared at him. "You think that makes it easier?""No. I think it gives you a choice when the hospital has left you with very few.""You could solve this with one signature. Then what? Every time I disagree with you, will I remember I owe you thirty thousand dollars?"His jaw tightened. "You will never owe me obedience.""You cannot promise that for the man you become when you are angry."He did not look away. "Then put that in writing t

Damian was already beside the car when I ended the call with the hospital. He opened the passenger door, his expression sharp with concern."Get in, Elena. We are going to Seabrook."I climbed inside with trembling hands. He entered the address into the navigation, then covered my fingers with his."We will get there," he said."You cannot promise that.""No. But I can promise you will not face this drive alone."Rain streaked the windshield as we left Boston behind. I called the bakery twice, but no one answered. Each unanswered ring tightened the fear around my chest."Drive faster," I whispered."I am already pushing the limit. Breathe in for me.""I cannot breathe when my mother might be dying.""Then take one breath at a time. For me."I tried, but the air caught in my throat. I had spent years believing that depending on someone was the first step toward being disappointed. Yet when Damian reached for my hand, I held on as if his touch could keep the worst from happening."Elena

The morning we left for Boston, I told myself the trip was about work. I needed to prove I belonged at Hart Group for reasons beyond the night we had shared. Still, when Damian opened the passenger door for me, my heart reacted as if the gesture meant something. "You could have sent a driver," I said, settling my bag at my feet. "I could have." "But you came yourself." His eyes met mine. "Would you rather I had not?" "I would rather know what you want from me." "Then ask me when you are ready to hear the answer." We stopped once on the drive. Damian returned with coffee and a warm pastry from the bakery counter. He placed them beside me without a word. "You remembered," I said. "I remember what matters to you." For the first time, I wondered whether the man who controlled entire boardrooms could remember a small preference without expecting anything back. By noon, we were inside the Boston conference room. I had prepared the campaign presentation carefully, but the senior e

Daniel stood beside my desk, holding our engagement ring in his open palm. The sight of it brought back my birthday, the room where I had found him with Vanessa, and the awful moment when every promise I trusted turned into a lie."Five minutes, Elena," he said. "That is all I am asking.""You had years.""Can we talk somewhere private?""No. You came here because you wanted to see me. You do not get to decide how this conversation happens."He lowered his voice. "I made a mistake.""You chose Vanessa while I was standing in the next room. You humiliated me. There is a difference between making a mistake and making a choice that destroys someone who trusted you."He looked down at the ring. "I ended things with her. I want to fix what I destroyed.""You cannot undo what happened by ending it with her now.""I still love you, Elena."The words landed without the power they once had. They meant little without honesty behind them."You loved that I stayed," I said. "You loved that I kept

The next morning, I arrived at Hart Group determined to prove that a message had not changed anything. He was already in the office when I stepped out of the elevator. He looked up from a file, and his expression shifted when he saw me."Good morning, Elena.""Good morning.""I got your message last night.""That was not an invitation to discuss it in the hallway.""Understood. I will wait until you choose to discuss it."I buried myself in work, revising the presentation and sending updated figures to the team. Still, my attention kept drifting toward the man behind the glass.Around noon, Sade appeared beside my desk carrying two coffees and a paper bag.She opened the bag. The smell of warm pastry drifted between us. "Eat something before you turn into one of those people who survives on ambition and caffeine.""I had breakfast.""Coffee is not breakfast, Elena." • THE HOOKUP THAT RUINED ME   CHAPTER 6: THE DANGER OF WANTING HIM

I woke up thinking about Damian Hart, which was becoming an irritating habit. His message from last night remained on my phone."I hope you will let me cook for you again. Next time, tell me what you love, and I will try to make it."I read it twice before putting my phone facedown. My mother needed surgery. My rent was overdue. My new job was the first real chance I had to change our circumstances. Those things deserved my attention, not the memory of Damian barefoot in his kitchen, smiling when I teased him about the garlic. Especially not the way I had wanted him to kiss me.By the time I reached Hart Group, I had made a decision. I would behave like a professional woman who had never spent a night in the arms of a man she barely knew. I would do my work, keep my distance, and stop giving one man so much power over my thoughts. The decision lasted until the lobby doors opened.Damian stood near reception in a charcoal suit and white shirt. His gaze found mine immediately. For one d
