CHAPTER 5: A DINNER FULL OF SECRETS

last update publish date: 2026-10-18 22:18:41

I told myself I would not go to dinner.

At six thirty, I stood before the cracked mirror in my Brooklyn apartment, choosing between two blouses. I settled on cream, then caught the faint scent of cedar on the fabric from the night before. One night, no names, no promises. Damian had already made those rules difficult to keep.

My mother called while I searched for earrings.

"Elena, the hospital needs the surgery deposit by Friday," she said, with the familiar clatter of the bakery behind her. "I told them we are trying."

"I got the job, Mama. Hart Group. Ninety thousand a year."

Her delighted laugh warmed me. "My girl! I knew someone would see what you are worth."

"I will make it work," I promised.

At seven, I stood outside the penthouse, repeating that I had come because I wanted to see him. Not because he was rich. Not because he was my boss. Not because his message had made me smile all afternoon.

Damian opened the door himself. No jacket, white shirt, sleeves rolled to his elbows. His expression softened when he saw me.

"You came."

"I almost did not."

"But you did." He reached for my coat, then paused. "May I?"

I handed it over. The penthouse smelled of garlic, butter, and warm bread. Two plates waited on the table. No staff moving quietly in the background, no formal arrangement designed to impress me. Just Damian beside a pot, looking almost uncertain.

"You cooked?" I asked.

"I hope that sounds like a compliment."

"It sounds like a surprise."

"Those are not always the same thing."

He served pasta with roasted tomatoes and fresh basil. When I noticed flour on his sleeve, he followed my gaze and laughed.

"My mother taught me to cook. She ran a small bakery in Seabrook. When I was a boy, I thought the whole world smelled like bread before sunrise."

"You miss it."

"Sometimes. I miss how simple things felt before everyone started measuring a person by what they owned."

I looked at him more carefully. Newspapers called Damian Hart ruthless. People lowered their voices when they spoke about him. Yet here he was telling me about his mother and a small bakery, and I wondered how many people ever saw this side of him.

"Why did you really hire me?" I asked.

He put down his fork. "You answered honestly, even when the truth could have cost you the job. You were frightened, but you did not let fear speak for you."

"You could have hired someone with ten years of experience."

"I could have." His grey eyes held mine. "And I wanted to see you again."

"That is the reason I was afraid of."

"I will not pretend I did not recognize you. But I was not going to discuss a private night in front of the recruitment team. You deserved to be judged for your work."

"You are my boss now. You can change my salary, my schedule, my future with a sentence. How am I supposed to know you will not use that?"

"You should question me. I have power over your job, and that makes this complicated. If you believe I am using it against you, tell me. I will listen."

"Listening is easy when the other person has no way to make you uncomfortable."

"You are making me uncomfortable right now."

"You look at me as though you expect a monster beneath every decent thing I do," he said. "I would like the chance to show you more."

I lowered my eyes. His honesty made me want to trust him, and wanting was how people got hurt. Daniel had once promised to love me forever. I had believed him until I found him with Vanessa. I could not afford to confuse a beautiful evening with a guarantee.

"What would your mother say if she knew you were cooking for a woman?" I asked.

"She would ask when I planned to bring you home."

I laughed. "You say that like you have already decided I am worth introducing."

"I have decided I want to know you. The rest is yours to decide."

When dinner ended, we carried the plates to the kitchen together. Our fingers brushed when we reached for the same dish. Neither of us moved.

"I have been thinking about kissing you since you arrived," he said quietly.

"You are being very honest tonight."

"I am trying not to hide behind convenient answers."

I wanted him to kiss me. The truth was warm and frightening, but I could not ignore the difference between wanting a man and trusting him.

"I should go," I whispered.

Disappointment crossed his face, but he did not argue. He brought me my coat and walked me to the door.

"I can get home myself," I said.

"I know. I only want you to get there safely."

"Thank you for dinner."

"Thank you for coming, Elena."

I hesitated. "Tonight was nice."

"Only nice?"

"Do not make me regret saying it."

"I would rather earn another evening than ruin this one by asking for too much."

The elevator doors opened behind me. Before I stepped inside, he spoke again.

"Elena, you do not owe me anything. Not because I hired you. Not because of that night. Nothing."

The doors slid shut, leaving me alone with the echo of his voice. For the first time since Daniel left, I wondered whether a man could want me without wanting to own me completely.

My phone vibrated as the elevator descended. A message from Damian appeared.

I hope you will let me cook for you again. Next time, tell me what you love, and I will try to make it.

I would like that.

I sent the message before fear could talk me out of it.

Then I will look forward to seeing you again.

I smiled in the empty elevator, knowing I had given him a reason to ask for another evening together.

My mother was waiting for surgery, and the hospital needed thirty thousand dollars before they would proceed. The payment plan I had requested was refused."I can pay part now," I said into the phone. "Please. My mother has just come through a crisis.""I am sorry, Miss Rose. The account must be settled."The call ended. Pride could not protect my mother.Damian crouched in front of me."Let me cover the deposit," he said. "We can put it in writing as a loan in your name. You can repay one dollar a month until you are able. No interest. No deadline."I stared at him. "You think that makes it easier?""No. I think it gives you a choice when the hospital has left you with very few.""You could solve this with one signature. Then what? Every time I disagree with you, will I remember I owe you thirty thousand dollars?"His jaw tightened. "You will never owe me obedience.""You cannot promise that for the man you become when you are angry."He did not look away. "Then put that in writing t

Damian was already beside the car when I ended the call with the hospital. He opened the passenger door, his expression sharp with concern."Get in, Elena. We are going to Seabrook."I climbed inside with trembling hands. He entered the address into the navigation, then covered my fingers with his."We will get there," he said."You cannot promise that.""No. But I can promise you will not face this drive alone."Rain streaked the windshield as we left Boston behind. I called the bakery twice, but no one answered. Each unanswered ring tightened the fear around my chest."Drive faster," I whispered."I am already pushing the limit. Breathe in for me.""I cannot breathe when my mother might be dying.""Then take one breath at a time. For me."I tried, but the air caught in my throat. I had spent years believing that depending on someone was the first step toward being disappointed. Yet when Damian reached for my hand, I held on as if his touch could keep the worst from happening."Elena

The morning we left for Boston, I told myself the trip was about work. I needed to prove I belonged at Hart Group for reasons beyond the night we had shared. Still, when Damian opened the passenger door for me, my heart reacted as if the gesture meant something. "You could have sent a driver," I said, settling my bag at my feet. "I could have." "But you came yourself." His eyes met mine. "Would you rather I had not?" "I would rather know what you want from me." "Then ask me when you are ready to hear the answer." We stopped once on the drive. Damian returned with coffee and a warm pastry from the bakery counter. He placed them beside me without a word. "You remembered," I said. "I remember what matters to you." For the first time, I wondered whether the man who controlled entire boardrooms could remember a small preference without expecting anything back. By noon, we were inside the Boston conference room. I had prepared the campaign presentation carefully, but the senior e

Daniel stood beside my desk, holding our engagement ring in his open palm. The sight of it brought back my birthday, the room where I had found him with Vanessa, and the awful moment when every promise I trusted turned into a lie."Five minutes, Elena," he said. "That is all I am asking.""You had years.""Can we talk somewhere private?""No. You came here because you wanted to see me. You do not get to decide how this conversation happens."He lowered his voice. "I made a mistake.""You chose Vanessa while I was standing in the next room. You humiliated me. There is a difference between making a mistake and making a choice that destroys someone who trusted you."He looked down at the ring. "I ended things with her. I want to fix what I destroyed.""You cannot undo what happened by ending it with her now.""I still love you, Elena."The words landed without the power they once had. They meant little without honesty behind them."You loved that I stayed," I said. "You loved that I kept

The next morning, I arrived at Hart Group determined to prove that a message had not changed anything. He was already in the office when I stepped out of the elevator. He looked up from a file, and his expression shifted when he saw me."Good morning, Elena.""Good morning.""I got your message last night.""That was not an invitation to discuss it in the hallway.""Understood. I will wait until you choose to discuss it."I buried myself in work, revising the presentation and sending updated figures to the team. Still, my attention kept drifting toward the man behind the glass.Around noon, Sade appeared beside my desk carrying two coffees and a paper bag.She opened the bag. The smell of warm pastry drifted between us. "Eat something before you turn into one of those people who survives on ambition and caffeine.""I had breakfast.""Coffee is not breakfast, Elena." She grinned. "Now, how was dinner?""How do you know about dinner?""My brother spent half the morning looking far too p

  • THE HOOKUP THAT RUINED ME   CHAPTER 6: THE DANGER OF WANTING HIM

I woke up thinking about Damian Hart, which was becoming an irritating habit. His message from last night remained on my phone."I hope you will let me cook for you again. Next time, tell me what you love, and I will try to make it."I read it twice before putting my phone facedown. My mother needed surgery. My rent was overdue. My new job was the first real chance I had to change our circumstances. Those things deserved my attention, not the memory of Damian barefoot in his kitchen, smiling when I teased him about the garlic. Especially not the way I had wanted him to kiss me.By the time I reached Hart Group, I had made a decision. I would behave like a professional woman who had never spent a night in the arms of a man she barely knew. I would do my work, keep my distance, and stop giving one man so much power over my thoughts. The decision lasted until the lobby doors opened.Damian stood near reception in a charcoal suit and white shirt. His gaze found mine immediately. For one d
