MIA

I sit at my desk. Mr. Wilson’s office feels too quiet. The hum of the computer is the only sound. I stare at the screen. It shows an unpublished article. My eyes scan the words, but they do not register. My mind is filled with thoughts of Aaron and his engagement.

He is getting married to someone else. The thought makes my stomach twist. I see her face in my mind. She is beautiful. She is elegant. She is not me. This news hit me hard. It was everywhere. On the news channels, in the papers, and on every gossip site. A sudden, public announcement. No warning. No explanation. Just a picture of their faces, their hands clasped. Everyone is talking about it. They’re the it couple in the country. My world spins out of control.

Mr. Wilson clears his throat. We are currently reading celebrity articles, as everyone is interested in them.

“Corvin,” he says. His voice is a low rumble. He points to the screen. “We need something fresh. Everyone knows about the engagement. The dress, the fami

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Price Of Defiance

AARONI watch Mia’s expression change from pure hate to concern then shock. In a matter of seconds, her head tilts, her eyes lose focus, a sudden, alarming blankness replacing their usual vibrant sparkle. “Mia?” I ask, my voice sharper than intended, a prickle of unease starting in my gut.She sways in a way that makes me stand alert. It’s too late to steady her with gentle hands. Her knees buckle before her body goes limp. The world tilts on its axis as I lunge, my arm shooting out, muscles screaming in protest as I anticipate her fall.I catch her, my hands a steel trap around her waist, pulling her flush against me just as her head lolls back. Her weight is suddenly dead in my arms, and for a terrifying second, I think she’s gone. Panic, raw and unadulterated, claws its way up my throat.“Mia! Mia, goddammit, wake up!” I bark, my voice strained, slapping her cheek, not too hard, just enough to shock her. Nothing. Her skin is cool, almost clammy against my palm. Her eyes remain shu

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    She's Gone

MIAA drop of rain touches my face, followed by another, and in seconds, it’s pouring heavily. I don’t care about getting wet as my legs carry on. I just keep walking, my pace quick and determined, each step a futile attempt to outrun the anger and pain in my gut. I have no destination, just an overwhelming need to be anywhere but near him, anywhere but that house with him in it. Then, a sleek black car glides to a halt beside me on the deserted stretch of road. The tinted window lowers revealing Aaron. I roll my eyes wondering what he will say next to completely ruin me.“Mia,” he says, his voice a low rumble. “Get in.” I don’t even break stride. My jaw tightens, a muscle ticking in my temple. “Fuck off, Aaron.” He doesn't move, just watches me, that infuriatingly calm look on his face. “Don’t be difficult. Just get in the car.” “Difficult?” I scoff, my voice cracking slightly with the effort of holding back a scream. “You think I’m being difficult? You’re delusional.” I keep wal

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    You Said 'See You Soon

MIAA few weeks has gone by since the whole Texas incident. Drew had taken me to a new house instead since the old one became easily accessible. This time around the house is hidden and in a private estate. As much as I want to feel at peace here, my heart still longs for something.. or someone. I haven’t heard a word from Aaron since his text. No calls not even to Drew. So much for telling me to see you soon. Maybe he’s too busy or got caught up in a family emergency.I am in the living room today. I ended up getting a new favorite spot in the living room. For some reason, it feels like the spot is made for me. There’s a soft bean bag with a reading table in front. My laptop is currently on the table as I work on my book. I tried changing it up to a little bit of fantasy but I ended up getting stuck. Maybe it’s because I cannot focus. My mind keeps drifting. It drifts to Aaron. I wonder if he is okay. I wonder what he is doing. He always finds a way to invade my thoughts as much as

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Weight Of One Call

AARONI walk into the grand home office. The door is heavy. It closes softly behind me. The room smells of old paper and leather. My grandfather is here in his wheelchair. His back is to me. He takes a stack of files. He wheels his chair. It rolls smoothly over the thick rug. He goes to a tall bookshelf. He reaches up. He puts the files on a high shelf. His movements are slow but sure. He is an old man. But he is still strong… and dangerous. He turns his wheelchair and looks at me. His eyes are sharp. They meet mine and he lets out a low grunt. It is a sound he often makes. It is a greeting. It is also a command. I stand still. I wait for him to speak. He does not speak. He just watches me. I clear my throat. I know I should speak first."Grandfather," I say. My voice is steady. I show no fear. I never do. "You called me. Why am I here?" I look around the room. I see no urgency. The house was normal and I didn’t get any other calls apart from that of his Secretary asking me to return

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    Packed and Missing

MIAI wake up slowly. The bed is soft. The sheets feel like silk against my skin. I sigh and stretch my arms above my head. My eyes open fully. The room is bright. Sunlight streams through the wide windows. I look to my side. The space next to me is empty. Aaron is not here.A small sigh escapes me. I shrug it off. Maybe he is making coffee. I sit up. My feet touch the cool floor. I notice something different. My smaller carry-on bag is zipped up by the closet. All my things are packed. This is strange. I did not pack them.I reach for my phone on the nightstand. The screen lights up. I see a new text message. It is from Aaron. My heart gives a little flutter. I open the message. It is short. "I have somewhere to be. Drew will pick you up. You two will travel back to New York together. See you soon Kitten."I read the words again. "See you soon Kitten." A warmth spreads through my chest. Butterflies erupt in my stomach. This feels different. Last time we were in a situation like this,
