My stomach dances around with some unknown emotion. They are just headphones but Aaron got them.

THE Aaron!

“Thank you,” I stutter, clutching the new noise-canceling headphones. “I…I love them. Really.”

I let out a shaky breath. I try not to look relieved for some odd reason. Relief because it’s Aaron, who seems…concerned, almost.

Aaron finally settles onto one of the plush sofas, the leather creaking softly under his weight. He focuses on the plate in front of him, chewing slowly. The television screen glows softly illuminating his face and I almost drool at how he looks.

Normal people don’t look like Greek gods right? His face is something you would imagine in a book or drawn by an animator. I just need him to be my inspiration for my book. Nothing else.

The weird feeling in my chest doesn’t matter. I am just being delusional. I’m a writer after all and we imagine things in different situations. Same thing I did with Drew. This means nothing.

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    Uncovering The Past

MIAI slowly walk to the bus station. My head filled with thoughts. What if I’m on the wrong side of this whole thing? Why did I conclude that Aaron is innocent? Because he didn’t kill me immediately?“Hey!” Someone calls and I turn to see it’s the woman from the Labour union. She smiles at me warmly before giving me a paper. “It’s Larry’s address. In case you want any information, his wife is willing to assist. No reporter has ever asked about his death. Promise me you’ll let the world know the truth.” Let the world know the truth at the cost of my life… how do I tell her that I can’t afford to say anything for now?I smile at her and take the paper. “I promise.”My loud mouth ends up saying before I can consider my choices. Maybe I can find my way around it and jet the news out but not through Laser or Aaron will have my head.I’m playing a dangerous game at this point but my conscience keeps nagging me. My phone rings and I jump. It’s Drew.Shit.I knew itHe’s probably watching m

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    The Lombardi Empire

MIA I wake up the next morning feeling much more refreshed. It’s really nice to have someone to talk to away from this life of chaos. I take a quick bath and dress for work. My stomach churns as I remember Mr Wilson’s task for me which was a direct contrast to what Aaron sent me there to do.I head downstairs and see Stella already cleaning the kitchen counter with my breakfast neatly arranged on one end. She looks up at me and I can swear I saw a flicker of concern before she looks back at the counter she’s cleaning.“I’m fine.” I say.She gives me a blank look before resuming her cleaning. “I did not ask.” She simply replies. Her reply was meant to me stoic and cold but the extra eggs on my plate made me understand her method of showing concern. I rush through breakfast and head to work. In the car, I see my daily order of coffee already bought and I look at Bobby through the rear view mirror. He just nods his head and drives off.It takes me almost half an hour to finally settle

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    A Breath Of Fresh Air

MIATonight, the living room is a no-go area for me. My usual writing spot will have to be vacant tonight because I can’t afford to cross paths with Aaron. Not tonight.I tell myself I shouldn’t feel guilty for telling him to go to hell. He deserved it. His words were hurtful even though they were true to some extent, they were still hurtful.I force myself to focus on my laptop screen, the half-finished chapter of my book mocking me. The longer I stare at the chapter the more I want to highlight everything and delete. What monstrosity.A notification pops up on my phone, pulling me from my writer's block and attempting to murder my chapter. It’s an Instagram message from a user named Natalie. I hesitate for a moment. Drew's warnings about meeting strangers echo in my head. But the need for a distraction, a breath of fresh air in this tense atmosphere, wins out. I tap open the message.“Hey! I love your aesthetic. Your page is so dreamy!” Natalie’s message reads. My face deepens in c

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    Shattered illusions

I walk into my house after a long day at work, still reeling from the news of the leaked article about Aaron. I can feel the tension in the air as I make my way to the kitchen. Something is off. The air is tense. "Miss Corvin, do you want lunch in your room?" Stella asks, her voice barely above a whisper. That is the height of it. Stella never speaks like that. That means something is really off. Her eyes glances behind me with a bit of urgency in her eyes like I should leave to my room fast. Before I can even reply, I hear heavy footsteps thundering down the stairs. Aaron appears in the kitchen, his face beaming with anger."Why didn't you stop the article from being released or at least give me or Drew a heads up?" he demands, his voice tight with anger.I open my mouth to explain, but he cuts me off. "What's the point of you being here if you can't do anything at all? Haven't you forgotten your use to me, which is to find out who is releasing such intel inside Laser?"His words st

  • THE HOSTAGE'S DILEMMA    Lynott's Vendetta

The fluorescent lights of the office didn’t seem like an asylum light to me anymore. I am already getting used to it. I wonder if this is how 9-5 jobs become normalized. Mr Wilson and I finally found a balanced ground to work. After the whole buzz last time, we began to work on actual real articles. Mr. Wilson is behind his desk, his face a mask of concentration as he proofreads the latest article about embezzlement. I’m doing the same, highlighting typos and grammatical errors with practiced ease. This is the type of article that keeps Me Wilson going. The type of news that keeps him glued to his laptop and thankfully, it makes him busy and less of a douchebag. Then, the 'ping' of a new notification slices through the air. Wilson glances at his laptop, his brow furrowing. Another ping. And another. My own laptop lights up with the same insistent alert."What in the hell...?" Wilson mutters, his fingers flying across the keyboard. He clicks on the notification, his face slowly turnin
