My mother's words froze the blood in my veins.

I stared at her.

Her face was still my mother's face, but something about her had changed.

The warmth I had seen in her eyes was gone.

Those beautiful mismatched eyes were now completely black.

Even her pupils had disappeared.

"Mom?"

She tilted her head.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Then she smiled.

"Don't call me that."

My heart cracked.

"Why?"

"Because I'm not the woman you remember."
