CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The One Who Chose Him.........

“There are no selections for Kevin Riven.”

The words hung over the arena.

For several seconds, Kevin did not move.

The laughter rolled on. Some people whispered behind their hands. Others pointed openly.

“He really thought someone would choose him.”

“After all that?”

“That five-point Codex didn’t help him at all.”

Kevin stared at the ground, his chest heavy.

He had imagined this moment so differently. He had pictured himself standing among the other candidates, waiting to hear which Order would accept him. He had pictured Arena smiling. His family finally seeing him in a new light. Everyone proven wrong.

Instead, he stood alone.

Rejected.

The announcer cleared his throat. “Kevin Riven, according to the rules—”

“Wait.”

One word.

The laughter died.

Kevin slowly raised his head.

Captain Orion had finally moved.

The Captain of the Veil Order was on his feet. He hadn’t raised his hand when Kevin’s name was called. He hadn’t shown any interest at all.

But now he stood at the edge of his platform, staring straight at Kevin.

“Captain Orion?” the announcer said.

Orion’s gaze didn’t waver. “Give me a moment.”

A murmur swept through the arena. Kevin’s heart began to pound. He didn’t understand.

Orion stepped down from the platform. Slowly. One step at a time. The crowd watched him cross the arena toward Kevin, stopping a few feet away.

Neither spoke.

Then Orion said, “Kevin Riven.”

“Yes, Captain?”

Orion studied him. “You failed your Codex ceremony.”

Kevin’s jaw tightened.

“You struggled in the first stage.”

Kevin said nothing.

“You were knocked down in combat.”

Kevin lowered his eyes.

“And yet you kept going.”

There was no mockery in his voice. Only fact.

Kevin looked up. “I had to.”

Orion raised an eyebrow. “Had to?”

“I wanted to become a Magical Knight.”

A small smile. “Wanting something isn’t enough.”

Kevin knew that. He had learned it the hard way.

Orion folded his arms. “Then answer me something.”

Kevin straightened. “Anything.”

Orion glanced at the five-point Codex. Then back at Kevin.

“Suppose you have enough power to defeat your enemy.”

Kevin listened.

“But using that power will destroy you.”

The arena was silent.

“Would you use it?”

Kevin thought for a moment. “No.”

A few people laughed quietly.

Orion didn’t.

“Why?”

Kevin hesitated. At first, the answer seemed obvious. But something in the way Orion had asked made him dig deeper.

He looked down at his hand. The same hand that had held his Codex. The same hand that had failed again and again.

Then he lifted his eyes.

“Because having the power to do something doesn’t mean I should use it.”

Orion’s face gave nothing away.

“If using that power destroys me,” Kevin said, “then I haven’t truly mastered it.” His hand clenched. “I would only be letting the power control me.”

The arena fell completely silent.

“And if you can’t control it?” Orion asked.

Kevin didn’t answer right away. His mind drifted back to the river. The creature. The moment he had nearly given up. Veyr.

Control. Not power.

He looked at his Codex.

“Then I’ll learn.”

A few seconds passed.

Slowly, Orion’s lips curved into a smile.

Then he laughed.

Not loudly. Not mockingly.

A real laugh.

“I like this boy.”

The crowd stared.

Kevin blinked.

Orion turned to the other Captains. “None of you wanted him?”

No one answered.

Orion laughed again. “Good.”

He looked back at Kevin.

“Because I do.”

Kevin’s eyes widened.

Orion held out his hand.

“Welcome to the Veil Order.”

For a moment, Kevin couldn’t move.

He stared at Orion’s hand. Then at the Veil Order’s symbol on his cloak. The Order everyone knew least about. The Order of physical strength, forgotten techniques, and old magical methods.

The Order many people overlooked.

Just as they had overlooked him.

Kevin slowly reached out and took Orion’s hand.

The crowd erupted. Some cheered. Others were stunned. The whispers changed at once.

“Captain Orion chose him?”

“The Veil Order?”

“Why?”

“He has a five-point Codex!”

Kevin barely heard them.

For the first time that day, the weight in his chest began to lift.

He had been chosen.

Not because everyone believed in him. Not because he had the most powerful magic. Not because his Codex looked impressive.

He had been chosen because someone had seen something else.

Orion released his hand and leaned closer.

“One more thing.”

Kevin looked at him.

Orion smiled. “Once you join the Veil Order…”

A pause.

“There is no going back.”

Kevin stared.

Then Orion laughed again, and Kevin couldn’t help but smile.

“Understood, Captain.”

A familiar voice rang through his mind.

Finally.

Kevin’s eyes widened. Veyr?

I’ve been waiting for someone to say it.

Kevin almost laughed. You knew Orion would choose me?

A pause.

I knew he was watching.

You never told me.

You didn’t need to know.

Why?

Veyr’s voice softened.

Because you needed to learn something for yourself.

Kevin waited.

Being overlooked is not the same as being unseen.

Kevin’s expression softened.

He looked across the arena. Arena stood among the newly selected knights, her eyes full of relief. She smiled at him.

He smiled back.

For years, he had wondered whether he would ever stand beside the people he admired.

Now he had his answer.

He was going to be a Magical Knight.

But not the way he had imagined. Not through applause. Not through everyone believing in him.

He had earned his place by refusing to stop.

The announcer returned to the center. “Kevin Riven has officially been accepted into the Veil Order!”

The Veil insignia blazed across the screen. The crowd erupted again.

Kevin looked up at it. The symbol seemed different now.

It was no longer just another Order.

It was his.

Orion turned away. “Come.”

Kevin followed.

As he took his first step toward the Veil Order, he glanced back at the arena. At the place where he had been laughed at. At the place where no hand had risen for him.

He remembered the feeling.

He would never forget it.

But he would not let it define him.

Remember this moment, Kevin, Veyr said.

Kevin kept walking. Why?

Because one day, people will look back and wonder how the boy nobody wanted became someone they could no longer ignore.

Kevin smiled.

He looked ahead.

For the first time, he wasn’t walking toward a dream alone.

He had an Order.

He had a Captain.

He had his Codex.

He had Veyr.

And his journey as a Magical Knight had finally begun.

But neither Kevin nor anyone watching from the arena knew the truth.

The five-point Codex had not chosen an ordinary boy.

And the Veil Order had not simply accepted another young mage.

Something had begun.

Something far older than Valeris itself.

And somewhere deep within Kevin’s Codex…

Something was still sleeping.

The royal headquarters rose from the heart of the Capital like a fortress carved from silence.Towering walls encircled it, layered with ancient protective magic. Guards stood at every entrance, utterly motionless. Unlike the Order's bustling halls, the air here felt heavy, as if the very stones were listening.Kevin tilted his head back and stared up at the enormous structure."Do we really have to go in?"The captain didn't turn around. "Yes.""I was only asking.""And I answered."Kevin sighed. His bandaged arm throbbed with every movement, and the thought of repeating the whole mission from the start made him want to lie down on the steps and never get up.They were nearing the entrance when the great doors swung open from the inside.A familiar figure stepped out.Kevin froze."Arena?"His twin sister stood at the top of the stairs in her Order uniform, flanked by two fellow mages, one of them clearly a senior member of her squad. Surprise flickered across her face."Kevin?"Her

Chapter 24: The Temple That VanishedThe ground began to tremble.Kevin barely had time to react before the stone beneath him crumbled away, sending him sliding toward a gaping hole in the earth. His injured arm screamed in protest as he clawed at the ground, searching for anything to hold on to."KEVIN!"A hand shot out and caught his wrist. For one terrifying moment, he hung above the darkness, legs dangling over a pit that seemed to have no bottom. Loose stones tumbled past him and vanished into the depths. They never made a sound."Pull me up!" Kevin gasped through clenched teeth."I'M TRYING!"Another teammate threw himself forward to help. Together, they hauled Kevin over the edge, and he collapsed onto the ground, chest heaving, his injured arm clutched against him."Wonderful," he wheezed. "We survive a temple full of monsters, only to get buried alive on the way out.""Can you stop complaining for five seconds?" someone snapped."Can you stop saving my life in the most painfu

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREEThe Voice Beneath the TempleThe treasure chamber shook again.BOOOOOOM!Dust rained from the ceiling. Ancient crystals shattered.Kevin looked up. “That doesn’t sound good.”Veyr sat comfortably on his shoulder. “Your ability to identify obvious problems continues to impress me.”“Can you be serious for five minutes?”“I am serious.” Veyr pointed at the ceiling. “That is definitely going to fall.”Kevin looked up.A massive crack spread across the stone.“…Oh.”“EVERYONE MOVE!” Kael shouted. The chamber exploded into chaos. The researchers bolted for the entrance. Liora threw up both hands. “Water Barrier!” A wall of water formed overhead, and chunks of stone slammed against it. Damon seized one of the researchers and dragged him away from a collapsing wall.Kevin stood frozen, his eyes locked on his Codex. The golden mark was still there. One of the five points now carried a faint golden glow.He touched it.The instant his finger met the mark—A whisper entered

Liora stood with one hand raised, water suspended around her fingers. Damon’s blade hung halfway out of its sheath. Even the dust drifting through the air had stopped.Kevin stared. “What…”He slowly turned his head. No one moved.“Kael?”Nothing.“Liora?”Nothing.“Damon?”Still nothing.Kevin swallowed. Then he looked at the figure in the center of the chamber. The stranger was no longer smiling. His dark cloak stirred faintly in the frozen air. His eyes were fixed on Kevin.“You can move.”Kevin stepped back. “Apparently.”The stranger tilted his head. “That should not be possible.”Kevin glanced at his Codex. The five-point symbol on its cover glowed faintly. Veyr was perched on his shoulder, and the little dragon’s expression had changed. No sarcasm. No smirk.Only suspicion.“Veyr?”“Don’t.”“Don’t what?”“Do an

Branches scraped against the sides of the magical transport as the Veil Order beasts drove it forward.Nobody was talking anymore. Not even Damon. The golden light from the temple had vanished. The forest was pitch black.Too dark.Kevin stared through the window. “That’s strange.”“What?” Kael asked.“The light. It disappeared.”Liora closed her book. “That’s probably worse.”Kevin turned. “How is that worse?”“Because whatever created that light no longer needs it.”Silence.Kevin looked at Veyr, still perched on his shoulder. “You have anything useful to say?”Veyr yawned. “No.”“Nothing?”“I could tell you we’re probably going to die.”“That’s not useful.”“It is if you enjoy being prepared.”Kevin sighed. “You’re terrible.”“And you’re alive because of me.”“Unfortunately.”Veyr’s eyes narrowed. “Say that again.”Kevin smiled. “Unfortunately.”Veyr opened his mouth. The c
