I opened my eyes to find my hand under his shirt, warmth jolting through me. I froze, cheeks burning at our closeness. His arm was around me, steady, as if the world might fall apart if he let go. The comfort was overwhelming. Why did it feel so good to be held by him? Did he feel the same, or was he just keeping a promise to Hunter? My heart raced as I melted into him, both grateful and unsure.
My eyes found him. Hunter ordered Nolan to take me to the meet point, but he promised to get me to the settlement. We passed the meeting point, but Hunter will never come. Needing comfort, I kissed Nolan. Did he feel what I did, or was he just honoring Hunter’s promise? Something between us was changing. What truth did Hunter want Nolan to share?
I dropped my forehead on his chest. "Guilt?" he asked softly.
I shook my head. "Just kissed my best friend," I admitted.
He chuckled. "I’ll take the best friend title," he said, and I didn’t lift my head, afraid to look him in the eyes.
His fingers lifted my chin. I closed my eyes, feeling my cheeks red. Then he kissed me softly, then pulled away. "Just paying back the…" he murmured.
I let out a breathy laugh. Then I sat up and took Jay while he gathered the stuff. "Okay, let’s go," he said, looking at Henry. "How long until the settlement?"
"One more day, we can walk during the daytime…" Henry replied.
"No, I won’t take that chance," Nolan replied. "Soon we have to find shelter, and it looks like it's going to rain too."
We moved through the wooded area, passing some farms along the way. Eventually, something caught my eye. I pulled his arm, and he looked at me.
I pointed to the fruit-bearing trees. We walked there, and he picked an apple for me. I bit into it while he watched me, then handed it to him, literally shoving it in his mouth. He bit on it with a laugh.
"More," I said with a mouth full.
"Come here," he said, chuckling. His tongue licked the side of my mouth, and I stopped chewing. His eye glowed. I forgot to breathe.
He picked four more, placed them in the backpack, and handed me another as we were eating, watching us.
Nolan decided to climb the tree to get more, and Henry came next to me. "You do know he’s in love with you," Henry said quietly.
I snorted. Nolan? We’re best friends, I almost said. But the words suddenly felt small. I tried to suppress the flutter in my chest and the ache in my stomach. Friendship isn’t supposed to feel this intense. Nolan’s always been there for me—but if I want more, do I risk everything we have? I wished things were simple. Are these real feelings, or just because of what we’ve been through? I couldn’t tell.
Well, what is he to you, Emily? Henry asked
Good question, I thought. While chasing something with Hunter, I missed what was right in front of me.
He dropped the apples and startled me. I saw lightning.
"We need to move, now," he said. He picked up his backpack and took my hand.
"Keep your eyes open, for shelter will be needed soon. Do you know the area?" Nolan asked.
We hurried in the direction he suggested. Minutes later, the sky fell loose. Rain came in torrents, cold and relentless, soaking us to the bone as we ran, splashing through mud and tangled roots. Lightning flashed through the trees, illuminating the gray haze for split seconds. Soon, we spotted a shelter—an old, battered house hunched in the thick of the woods. The paint was long gone, the wood swollen and dark from years of storms. We dashed up the steps as thunder rattled the air, water sloshing around our shoes. Inside, the place smelled of damp earth and mold. The rain beat hard against the broken windows, droplets streaking in through cracks and dripping onto the warped floorboards. The air was chilly and thick with the must of old fabric and dust. Henry yanked back a faded, dirty rug, revealing a trapdoor underneath. When he opened it, the metallic hinges creaked loudly over the rush of rain. He lit the lantern and climbed down the ladder first. Nolan went next, holding out his hand to help me descend. Below, the space was cramped but safe, dim lantern light flickering over the walls. The shelter must have once been carefully arranged. One end had a sagging couch surrounded by shelves lined with rusted cans and chipped mugs. The other side was taken up by a battered bed with a ripped mattress, piled with threadbare blankets that still looked inviting after the storm outside.
"Undress now," Nolan said as he took his shirt off, then his pants, and I just watched. He smiled. Then he undid the buttons to the shirt, and I didn’t even notice that I shivered. Jay was dry. We held Nolan’s jacket on him.
"Do you want me to take the rest, or will you do it?" he asked, his eyes glowing again.
"I will do it," I said. He took a blanket from inside the backpack.
"Come here," he said as he pulled me against him, wrapping the blanket around us. My cheek was on his warm chest, his arms tightened around me, and my body relaxed.
"Henry, latch the door, and turn in. Let’s get some rest," Nolan said.
"See you tonight," Henry said, laughing.
"Nolan," I said, my teeth chattering, "thank you." "Try to sleep," he said. I took Jay in my arms, and Nolan’s arms had me against him, his chest warm against my back.
"Can you unhook the... I need to feed him," I said. It was dark, and the only noise was Jay sucking on motion. I drifted to sleep.
When I woke up, the world felt still and unfamiliar. Nolan's arms were coiled around me possessively, one across my bare chest, one in the middle. Jay, my baby, was lying beside us, sucking his fist.
I turned my head slightly. "Nolan," I whispered. His eyes opened, glowing amber. "Hmmm?" he mumbled. "I need to feed him," I said. Then he realized his arm was across my chest. I felt his arousal behind me. Good thing he doesn’t feel mine.
"I’m not sorry, I was just keeping you warm," he whispered in my ear.
Emily’s POVMy whole body melted in his arms after we spent the afternoon tangled in bed, skipping lunch. I ached in the best way; every inch of me felt wanted, safe, and impossibly close to him. It was worth it.Nolan worshipped my body. Every touch of his fingers sent electricity over my skin, leaving trails of heat pulsing beneath the surface. His hands, so devoted as they explored me, kindled every nerve ending and made my breath catch, my heart wild in my chest. I felt cherished, alive. His lips traced sensitive places, his breath warm and tantalizing against me. Desire pooled in my core, building a gentle ache, as if I floated in a haze that was all him. I surrendered, mind floating in the glow of his closeness. Even as I drifted off, aftershocks of pleasure shimmering through me, a strange dream pressed in. Emily, a voice called. I need you."Who are you?" I asked. "What do you want from me?""I'm Aya, your wolf. I am a part of you, always meant to be with you, even if you can
Nolan’s POVI let my anger speak, and Dennis sensed me. Fuck. I knew my strength, but the day Emily was taken, something dark came out of me. I was afraid of my own thoughts. I pushed it back and asked Minx.Is you, Minx saidOkay, but why do I feel like a fucking beast about to rip everyone apart?" Because you are a beast Minx said.“You’re not helping," I shouted at him. Now, Dennis looked in terror as my true aura pushed him back. Nolan, Emily said, smiling, maybe he is confusing me with someone else?Yeah, maybe, I said firmly. I took her hand and pulled her behind me. Took a tray and started to put stuff on it. She touched my arm.Nolan, look at me, let’s stay calm, we just got here.I let out a breath, then smiled.Of course, what else do you want to eat besides this favorite of yours? She looked at the tray and saw things I knew she liked. Tears filled her eyes.I put the tray down and pulled her into my arms. I’m sorry, I just can’t help getting so possessive of you. Forgiv
Emily’s POVNolan held my hand, and I looked at him, finally seeing what I had missed. We spent so much time together. I trusted him deeply, and now I realize I want more than friendship. I ache for him, uncertain if I deserve this after everything. Still, I can't hide how much I want him.Hunter swept me off my feet and treated me well, until Isabella came into the picture. The pack pressure, his brother. I was just that human who gave him a son, nothing more. Now to find out I’m actually a wolf. How could they not realize that? How did only Nolan know this?Nolan? I have so many questions about the wolf…"Emily, not now. Remember, a human gave birth to Jay for us," Nolan said quietly. He turned to me and touched my face softly. Leaning in, he kissed my lips."Love birds," someone called from behind us. Nolan turned to see Betty standing there."Good morning," Nolan said to her with a smile. I just followed his lead and smiled too."Let’s get you the supplies," Betty said, waving to
Hunter’s POV"Calm down, or you’ll end up in the fucking dungeon again, Hunter!" Jalen shouted at me. Jalen, my loyal Beta and oldest friend, was always trying to keep me from losing control."I want them back," I said, punching the wall. "Nolan will pay for taking her away from me."The team will be here soon. A knock on the door. Come in! I shoutedThe warrior walked inside. "Alpha, we lost track of them after the rain. Emily was not at the meeting point, so we split up and tried every direction," he reported.I screamed. Jalen gestured for the warrior to leave."Jalen, get a team and have them search far and beyond until you find them. I want my son back," I ordered.Jalen looked at me. "Your son? Not Emily?"I hesitated, fists clenching as the question stabbed at me. Of course, I wanted Emily back. But my son, my son was innocent in all of this, my blood, my heir. He needed me to protect him, no matter what. Emily was strong, I told myself. She'd find a way to survive. Still, a pa
Nolan’s POVI need to stop thinking about what I’m going to do to her and focus on cleaning myself off fast without wasting water. I mean, what the fuck, they have running water?Emily's towel was on the floor, Jay was in the little bassinet, and she was naked under that blanket. I lower the light on the lamp, barely flickering. I got under the covers and turned to her. Our eyes met, and she touched my face softly.I leaned in and kissed her, as I caressed her curves, and pulled her closer. Tell me, I said against her lips, what you want me to do to you?Everything, she answered, and I let out a growl. My lips traced her body slowly down, opened her legs, and ran my tongue over. Fuck she tasted good. I was teasing her with my tongue on her nub, and her hand grabbed a handful of my hair and pulled. I inserted my fingers, and she was tight. Her body trembled, and I let her ride the orgasm, then another. I hovered over her, then slid the tip of my cock on her wet pussy. I pushed in, and
Nolan’s POVEmily's scent drove me insane, and Minx was trashing inside me; my arm was across her chest. I was fucking aroused, and I think she’ll kill me slowly, or I'll die of blue balls. No way I would’ve moved. I felt her body against me, and it felt right in my arms, her soft skin. Fuck.Jay was sucking his fist again. Kid, let me get a fucking turn, I said to myself. Her head turned, and she asked me to move my arm, not mad. Okay. I lowered it, not taking it out.I kissed her neck. Couldn’t help myself, then her shoulder, and she let out a soft moan. I was waiting for Jay to finish eating. She placed him next to her. And she turned, and my lips crashed on her, with need and desperation, as my hands explored her beautiful body.Nolan…she whispered.Tell me, I said against her lips.I…I won’t, I said as I took her breast in my mouth, and she gasped. Her hand touched my arousal, and I growled. My fingers played with her clit, and she moaned. I want to taste you…But it's not the pl
