Chapter 10

KAIA'S POV:

I wake up to silence. Not the kind that feels peaceful. The kind that feels… wrong. Like the world is holding its breath.

Even the birds aren’t chirping.

I sit up slowly, rubbing my eyes. The room is cold. Too cold. The window is shut but the air bites at my skin like frost. My hand finds the necklace around my throat - the silver fang charm resting against my collarbone like a promise I don’t understand yet.

The dream from last night lingers like fog. Not as sharp as the nightmare before, but something heavy presses behind my eyes. Like I was somewhere I shouldn’t have been. Like something followed me back.

I get dressed without thinking. Jeans. A hoodie. Sneakers. Just enough to blend in.

I want to feel normal today. I need to feel normal. I also want today to feel normal for once. But school has other plans.

****

The hallway buzzes with low chatter when I get there, but it quiets unnaturally when I walk in. Eyes slide toward me. Whispers rise like steam.

KAIA'S POV: The smell of cafeteria food lingers in the hallway as I shut my locker, trying not to think too hard about the whispers that seem to follow me through the school. It's been a few days since I met Rhea, and even though we’ve only shared a few glances, there's something about her that draws me in. She's always alone. Always quiet. Like me. I catch sight of her walking down the corridor, books clutched tightly to her chest. Her dark hair is tied in a messy bun, and she's hunched in that way people get when they’re used to making themselves smaller. A few steps behind her, I spot a group of girls - three, maybe four, trailing after her like predators. One of them stands out immediately: the tall blonde with icy eyes and the fang symbol on her shirt.Her. The stupid ass bitch. The same girl who shoved me aside my first week here."Hey freak," the blonde girl snarls, kicking Rhea’s heel hard enough to make her stumble. Her books scatter across the floor, the sound

The image of their limp bodies sprawled on the floor won’t leave my mind. My hands still feel too warm, like the ghost of the fight is trapped under my skin. I keep hearing my own growl, alien and raw. That wasn’t me.Except it was. It’s morning now, and I stare at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. My eyes look normal. Brown. Tired. Human. But I know better. Something inside me is different now. Awakened. A knock rattles the door. "Kaia?" It's Rowan. His voice is softer than usual. "I'm almost done," I call back, trying to sound normal. Not like someone who nearly killed three people. I pull on my hoodie, yank the sleeves over my wrists, and avoid the mirror on my way out. I don’t want to see what else I might notice. Rowan stands there, arms crossed. He doesn’t ask if I’m okay. He just nods toward the hallway. "Lucien’s dr

KAIA'S POV: The walls of the principal’s office feel like they’re closing in on me. My palms are sweaty, heart thundering as I step inside. Principal Davis sits stiffly behind her desk, her lips pressed into a thin line. But it’s the two unfamiliar people seated across from her that make my stomach sink. Social workers. I’ve seen enough movies to recognize that kind of calm, the kind they put on when they’re about to drop a bombshell. Tight-lipped kindness. Gentle voices. Soft destruction. "Kaia," Principal Davis says, her voice unnervingly gentle. "Please, have a seat." I hope I'm not in any trouble but I can't even think of anything that can cause social services to show up here except... I hover for a second, already on edge, then drop into the chair like I’m about to be sentenced. The woman to her right leans forward, her blazer too neat, her clipboard too full. "My name is Mrs. Jennings, and this is Mr. Cole. We’re from Child Protective Services." Panic skit

KAIA'S POV: The morning feels colder than usual, even with spring creeping in. Maybe it’s the nerves, or maybe it’s the fact that I’m leaving everything I’ve ever known behind. The thin air outside bites at my skin as I zip up my hoodie and step out onto the porch, my duffel bag over my shoulder. I didn’t sleep last night. How could I? Between the silence of an empty house and the suffocating thoughts swirling in my mind, I barely managed to close my eyes. A black SUV, the kind that screams government or someone very rich, rolls up to the curb. Mrs. Jennings steps out from the backseat, her professional smile still intact. "You ready, Kaia?" she asks like this is a casual road trip and not the dismantling of my entire identity. I nod, too tired to form a real answer. My limbs feel detached from my body as I slide into the back seat. The door shuts with a dull thunk, and that’s it. No goodbyes, no last glances. Just... gone. The drive to the airport is quiet, fill

KAIA'S POV: The knock at my bedroom door is soft, almost uncertain. I sit up on the edge of the bed, where I’ve been pretending to unpack the same sweater for the last twenty minutes. My palms are still clammy from the car ride over. I haven’t seen the brothers since last night in the living room. I haven’t been ready to face them again. "Yes?" My voice comes out small. I hate it.The door creaks open, and Rowan steps in. He looks taller in the daylight, even though his posture is stiff. Like he’s nervous. He’s dressed in a black Henley and jeans, simple but tidy, like someone who wants to make a good impression without trying too hard. He clears his throat. "Dinner’s ready. If… you’re up for it. It's chicken and chips." I nod, brushing imaginary lint off my leggings. “Okay.” He waits a beat, maybe expecting me to say more. I don’t. I follow him out. The hallway is warm and inviting, lined with soft lighting and thick carpet that muffles our steps. Framed pho

KAIA'S POV:The next day, the morning sun coming into my room is too bright that it almost takes my eyesight. No kidding. It streams in through the lavender curtains, painting stripes on the floor like it’s proud of waking me up. I lie still, tangled in silky sheets that still feel too luxurious for someone like me. For a moment, I forget where I am until the weight of it all comes crashing back.Canada. Brothers. A new school. I groan and drag myself out of bed, padding barefoot to the closet where someone, probably the maid, has already hung up the new clothes we got yesterday. It’s still bizarre, being taken to a massive mall with a black credit card and told to "get whatever you want." I’d never had the freedom to choose before. I didn’t know it could be so… overwhelming. I haven't even gotten any new clothes since my 16th birthday. I slip into a dark purple hoodie and skinny jeans. Comfortable armor. Downstairs, the scent of cinnamon and something buttery wafts

KAIA'S POV: I stand frozen by the door of the classroom, stunned by what I’ve just seen, two boys staring at me like I’ve risen from the dead, then sharing a look that screams something I don’t understand. Then one word. One strange, spine-tingling word. “Mate.” I blink rapidly. Did they just say… mate? Maybe I misheard them. Maybe this jet lag is finally messing with my ears. I force my legs to move, slipping into an empty desk as the teacher starts roll call. I keep my head down, pretending to scribble something in my notebook, but my skin is buzzing like I brushed against an electric fence. They’re still staring at me. The taller one, Kai, I think, is tense, jaw locked. The other one, Axel, looks more confused than angry now, his eyes flicking to me and then back to Kai like he’s trying to make sense of something. “Kaia?” the teacher calls out. I raise my hand halfway. “Here.” A few more names are called. Then, the class moves on to some kind of ice-breaker activity where

AURORA'S POV: I don’t go downstairs the next morning.I stay curled on the edge of my bed with my knees pulled to my chest and my arms wrapped around them like a cage. I haven’t cried, not yet, but my head feels like it’s been crying all night. Heavy. Foggy. On the verge. There’s a knock at my door. It's soft and gentle."Kaia?" Ezra’s voice.I don’t answer. "Okay. I’m just gonna leave this here." A pause. "It’s cinnamon toast. You liked that, right?" The plate clinks softly as he sets it on the floor. Then silence. I wait until I hear his footsteps fade before I crawl over and open the door just a crack. The plate is still warm. The toast is perfectly golden. It even smells like childhood, like something I was never allowed to want.I take a bite, chew slowly. It tastes like guilt.**** When I finally drag myself downstairs, Rowan is already waiting at the bottom, leaning against the railing like he’s been there for hours."We need to talk." I groan. KAIA'S POV: I have been avoiding the mirror all morning. I know what I saw last night, well, what I think I saw but I also know how dreams mess with your head. I haven’t slept right since I got here, and maybe I’m just cracking under the weight of all the weird. Still, I brush my teeth with my head down and tug a hoodie over my tank top like it’s armor. When I finally look up, my eyes are their usual muddy brown. No gold.No wolf.Just tired, heavy-lidded Kaia.***** Rowan isn’t at the breakfast table. Neither is Lucien or Ezra. There’s a plate of eggs on the counter, but no note. No footsteps. No noise. It’s eerie. That's so not weird. I sit and eat half, more out of obligation than hunger, then grab my backpack and head out the door. The walk to school is quiet. Too quiet. • THE LOST WEREWOLF PRINCESS: MATED TO THE RIVALS   Chapter 7

KAIA'S POV: Another day, another silent battle not to scream. The school feels off today. It’s not something I can explain. Just a low hum under my skin, like I walked through a static field and it hasn’t stopped buzzing. I tug my hoodie tighter around me even though the halls are warm. It’s not cold. I just feel exposed. Axel’s leaning against my locker when I get there, grinning like the hallway is his runway. This guy is such an attention seeker. There are some students looking at the scene he is low-key creating. Oh Lord."Good morning, sunshine," he drawls. He says it every day now, like he’s trying to brand the phrase into my brain. I roll my eyes and give him a stiff smile."I don’t shine." "You glow, then," he corrects, and those dimples flash as he winks. If that's his idea of flirting then he is failing woefully."Annoying," I mutter."Charming," he counters. From behind me, I feel it before I see him. That shift in the air. Like the hallway just tensed.

KAIA'S POV: I lie awake in the bed that’s too soft, staring up at the ceiling that’s too high. The room smells faintly of lavender and something sweeter I can’t place, like fresh snow or expensive perfume. It should feel like a dream... being taken from a life of misery and dropped into luxury. But all it does is make the pit in my stomach twist tighter. All the what ifs that keep popping up in my mind... I can’t stop thinking about the way Axel and Kai looked at me today. The exact same moment their eyes glowed. That flash of blue so vibrant, it made me think I imagined it. And the way they whispered the word "mate" like it meant something, something terrifying and unchangeable. I turn on my side and squeeze my pillow, trying to smother the memory. It doesn’t work.A soft knock sounds on the door. I sit up, brushing my hair out of my face. "Yeah?" The door creaks open, and Ezra leans in. "Hey, kid. Can’t sleep?"This is definitely new....I shake my head. He
