~Vixen~

As though to infuriate me, Olaine bent to hug Paul, and even kissed his forehead.

“Son, I didn’t think you’d recognize me,” she said with a grin, a smug expression on her face as she winked at me.

I remained frozen at the spot, wanting to believe that this was a terrible dream. One I would wake up from.

“Mom, dad shows me pictures of you every night. I recognized you immediately. I’m a good boy, aren’t I?”

“Of course, you are darling. Mom’s going to take good care of you now,” Olaine replied with a smile.

My lips parted, but nothing came out.

Paul’s little arms wrapped tightly around her neck, his giggles echoing through the garden.

It felt like my heart was folding on itself, so painful I thought I would die.

For five years, Paul had known only me.

My voice, my arms, my scent, my lullabies and warmth.

Or so I thought.

And now…

He did not even glance in my direction.

Olaine looked at me then, her lips stretched into a sweet poisoned smile as she temporarily stopped hugging Paul.

She stood up, her eyes gleaming with victory.

“Sister,” she continued, “I haven’t thanked you yet. You did an amazing job raising my son.”

My chest twisted.

Her son?

So, this was real.

My pulse thundered under my skin in response to the pain slicing through me.

I took a step closer, and another, my legs trembling under me.

“Paul…” my voice broke slightly. “Please…”

I couldn’t tell why I was begging, but the pain in my chest made it impossible to breath.

Paul looked at me then, his eyes wide with confusion and something pure.

“Mommy, are you alright?” He asked slowly.

It took me a moment to realize he was talking to me. I let out a small laugh, but a tear follow suit.

“I’m alright, love…” I began, walking closer to him.

But Olaine stepped back then, turning his attention back to her.

“Son, your real mom’s here now. Do you want to go checkout the toys mom bought for you?”

Paul’s eyes widened and he nodded, smiling.

Olaine kissed his check.

Rage rushed through me at that.

I rushed forward. “No, stay the hell away from him.”

But before I could get any closer, someone held me back effortlessly.

I looked up, tears blurring my view. But I could make out Kael’s face as he stared down at me.

“Olaine, take Paul back to his room.” He said, his voice controlled.

I watched as she disappeared with Paul in her arms. I wanted to shout, to rush after her and take my son from her arms, but my legs remained rooted to the spot.

“Are you trying to attack Olaine again? Haven’t you done enough damage already?” He asked darkly after Paul and Olaine left.

Blinking rapidly, I tried to force myself to think.

I held unto his shirt, my hands shaking.

“Kael… She is saying Paul’s her son. She’s lying, right?”

Kael looked away then, almost like he couldn’t bring himself to meet my eyes.

“Kael… please tell me this is all a lie.”

It had to be. There is no way Paul’s her child.

But then his voice came, slow and steady.

“It’s true.”

My stomach tightened. “What?”

“Olaine is Paul’s mother.”

I scoffed dryly. “You told me Paul’s mother was dead.”

His eyes darkened. “I thought she was dead. Who is to be blamed for that?”

Everything suddenly became blurry under my feet.

“You made me raise my sister child, and you didn’t think to tell me.” My voice broke slightly.

Something flashed across his eyes. “Would you have ever accepted him if you knew he was her child, or rather try to kill him?”

My hand moved before my mind could keep up. It was only when the loud sound came, that I realized what I had done.

He looked at me, his eyes dark with rage. “How dare…”

I shoved him hard before he could continue. “How dare I slap you? You backstabbing monster. I curse the very day I set my eyes on you.”

His eyes narrowed slightly, his lashes fluttering a little.

But then, his eyes darkened again. “That’s enough. Don’t even think of making troubles for Olaine and my son. Don’t even show up in front of him again, his mother is here now.”

My heart shattered, and the tears followed.

“Kael…” My voice broke slightly.

But he turned to the guards. “Take her back to the dungeon. Keep her there until I say so.”

At that moment, I realized I had nothing left.

~Vixen~Seven Months Later“Luna, the regional press is inviting you for an interview again.” My new assistant, Alora, said. She passed me the tablet, showing me the email of the invite.I handed it back to her, shaking my head. “Turn it down.”It was no use going to interviews nowadays. They always asked the same thing. The war from seven months ago. They already knew everything, but just loved to bring it up because it brought thousands of views. With the dome already broken, Vaelor led the fight against the Vanguards and High Magistrate, eventually winning the war.It turned out my magic didn't just shatter the dome, but also weakened the High Council’s magic.Hearing that the Magistrate had been stripped of his powers, the Royal Enforcers and International Oversight Committee arrived, arresting everybody associated with the High Council. They brought out evidence of their harvesting program, sentencing them to public execution.I still remembered watching as they beheaded them.I

~Vaelor~The victorious smile of the High Magistrate had long vanished. He was shocked and angry when Vie's and I mating bond created a crack on the containment dome. Now they were fixing the crack, desperate not to give us any opening. The containment dome shimmered overhead, a seamless shell of silver light overtaking the sky. Beyond it, the Council's Vanguard Warriors stood in perfect formation with their faceless masks as they poured their magic in repairing the dome.West came to my side, his face crestfallen. “Alpha, we've tried everything. Nothing can pass through it.”My eyes went to the warriors at the border, trying to shoot through the dome.“Did you think modern weapons can match ancient magic? Those things are useless.”He bowed. “We await orders from you, Alpha.”I gestured to the truck behind my car. “I brought magical artifacts with me.The warriors whose wolves have weak powers should take them.” My eyes went to the Vanguards fixing the dome. “Their backbone is magic,

~Vaelor~I returned to the mansion before the sun rose, placing the collar around Vie's neck as she slept.Returning to my personal office, I began to make plans on how to get Vie out of this pack. While I find ways to defeat the council, she must remain safe.As the sun eventually rose, it felt like trouble was rising alongside it.West barged into the office, worry written over his face.“Alpha, they're here.”I didn't need to ask who he was referring to.His expression said it all. They came way earlier than expected. It wasn't even up to forty eight hours.“How large is their army?” I inquired.“A hundred.”My brows furrowed. “Just a hundred?”West nodded. “They don't seem here to fight or negotiate. They're gathered at the pack's border, building some dome.”The Broker told me last night that the council's elite advance force was going to be deployed if things escalated. They were an army of faceless silver masked warriors. These were not ordinary warriors. They are the first wav

~Vaelor~Adjusting my hooded cloak, I left the mansion through the hidden creaking back gate. The night wind made cloak billow behind me as I walked quickly towards the car I hired.I entered the car, the driver staring at me through the rearview mirror. He bowed slightly. “It's an honor to meet you again, Alpha–”“At this moment I'm not your Alpha,’’ I quickly cut him off. “I can be addressed by my former title.”“As you wish, The Shadow.”The Shadow.Hearing that name again brought memories that ought to be long forgotten. But just this once, just tonight, I was going to welcome those memories. I was going to answer my old title before I became Alpha.I looked at the mansion. Not even West knew my whereabouts.I've done everything to draw a line between my past and present, but now I was crossing that line myself.I turned back to the driver. “Hurry up, let's move.”I had to return before Vie noticed I was gone. The ride to the Coven was shorter than I expected, maybe it was because

  • THE LUNA HE NEVER WANTED   238| The Impossible Choice

~Vaelor~Vie sat by my side, the council's scout sitting at the far end of the table. It was clear she wasn't just an ordinary werewolf, probably a hybrid.Probably part witch, part werewolf. Her presence alone radiated ancient magic, as though she has been around here for centuries. She was calmed, composed, and unfazed by anything. It seemed she was focused on achieving her aim for the visit, and nothing could stop her.As far as it doesn't concern my pack or my wife, we would have no issue. After minutes of awkward silence and staring at Vie, the scout finally said something.“We know about the baby.”What a way to start the conversation.“And how does my child have anything to do with you?” Vie asked calmly, but I could sense the edge in her voice. She was nervous, but was putting up a brave face not to look weak.I held her hand tighter. The scout stared at Vie's stomach and scrunched her nose. “It affects our plan.”Vie narrowed her eyes. “Your plan doesn't affect my pack, my ch

  • THE LUNA HE NEVER WANTED   237| The Summons

~Vixen~I stared at the letter through my laptop screen, reading the threat for the umpteenth time.I called it a threat because it was indeed a threat.Especially the last line:“We are therefore sending a scout to claim you. For who you are no longer who you thought you are, but what the council wishes.”I scoffed in disbelief.Who in the heck comprises this ‘High Council'?I've dealt with dignitaries and several people in authority throughout the kingdom, how was it possible I was just hearing about them for the first time?Wait. My eyes scanned the letter, immediately spotting a virtual stamp. This stamp was familiar.I saw the exact stamp in the back of a crumbled envelope in Vaelor's office recently. My eyes shone in realization.Could this be the letter he received? It had to be.It explained why he has been so all of recently.I inhaled deeply as I stared at the glowing afternoon sun.Yet again, I've been confined to my room.Vaelor, this time around, was very strict about me
