She didn’t respond, even though I wished desperately that she would say something, anything to give me even the slightest flicker of hope.

But her lips remained sealed.

I laughed at myself for even hoping in the slightest. I looked at her closely, only then did I notice that her lips were trembling.

I stepped forward again, gently gathering her into my arms. I stroked her hair gently, enjoying how the soft texture of it felt against my hand.
