Rabid.

That is how Louisa’s father is behaving.

A rabid, uncultured dog.

I shouldn't be surprised, really. The Blood Moon Pack have prided themselves on being isolated from everyone else.

The issue with that is they have no standard to compare their behaviors with and hence, they behave like mad dogs when exposed.

"Open this door! That is my wife in there!"

The pounding has been going on for ten minutes, giving me and everyone else with me a raging headache.

SELENE"I knew you'd come eventually," I say, not even bothering to look up.I was halfway through a glass of red wine and a stack of boring paperwork when Gaines is shown in.My study is on the top floor, glass on three sides, the whole city glittering below like spilled jewelry, and I chose the chair behind the desk specifically so he would have to walk the entire length of the room to reach me. He takes his time doing it, jaw set, hands flexing at his sides.Oh, he absolutely hates this.“Don't flatter yourself,” he mutters under his breath, probably thinking I wouldn't hear it.What an ignorant fool. He believes he is the apex without even trying to understand his enemies or allies. That idiocy will be a useful tool.“I was hoping you would call sooner," I continue without offering a seat. I turn one page, then another, and only then do I set my pen down and look up, giving him a surprised look at his standi

GAINESThe only warning I get is the sound of hurried footsteps before my study door bangs open against the wall hard enough to make the portrait of my father rattle in its frame“What the-”“Alpha!” I don't get to finish the sentence as Roarke stumbles in like a drunk. His shirt is torn at the collar, his left eye is swelling shut, and there is a smear of dried blood under his nose he hasn't bothered to wipe. He leaves dirt on my cream carpet from the doorway to the desk.I sit back in my leather chair with my fingers steepled and watch him lower himself to his knees wincing.I don't say anything at first. I don't do anything either. I just stare at him, because I have learned that a man tells you more when you let him suffer a little first.“I… I failed you, Alpha,” he whispers, his head hanging low.I close my eyes for a few seconds, reigning in my disgust before I open them back.“Take a seat, Roarke,”

LOUISAA few minutes earlier“What do you mean he is the father of your children?!” My mother asks, confused. “You have children?"“Yes, mum. I have children -”“How?! When?! His children? I thought… I thought you just recently got to this pack?!”“I did. It's… it's kind of a long story.”“I'll take the summarized version.”Through the wall the pounding keeps coming, dull and steady, and every time it lands my mother's shoulders jump up toward her ears but she still manages to keep her focus on me.“Right,” I say as I get up, drag her chair a few inches so her back is to the door, and sit down across from her again. “So, you remember that day, years ago, when I uh… pushed fa- Roarke out the window.”“Yes, how can I forget? It was the last time I ever saw you.”“Right, so the night before, I uh… sneaked out to a party.”“You did what?!” “Water under the bridge mum. It's been years, I am an adult, I have done worse things than that. Moving on.”“Okay. Okay.”I tell her everything, from

LOUISA “You don't know what you are doing…” he begins. “I won't let you.”“I, Louisa Stone…”“SHUT UP!”“...a rogue by choice,” I continue, ignoring his screams.“I SAID SHUT UP GIRL! DO YOU HEAR ME!” he snarls as he launches himself at me but Travis is faster. He grabs him by the arms and locks them behind his back.“Continue,” Travis tells me.“...stand here, before the goddess and witnesses. I call on all to witness my choice, swine never to regret. I remove my ties to the Roarke Family. I remove their authority over me. As of today, I stand apart from them. Never to acknowledge them as blood.”“Lou,” my mother whines as a blue line glows between her, me, and my dad. It glows and glows, so bright that we all have to shield our eyes from it and then… it snaps. It is done.“YOU FUCKING BITCH!” My father roars as he pushes off Travis in adrenaline and rushes at me, slamming me against the wall, his claws scratching at my neck but he is not there for long.Travis snatches him by the

  • THE LUNA'S RECKONING    CHAPTER 22: FAMILIAL TIES 2

LOUISA “Breathe, Lou,” I whisper to myself. “Just breathe. You can handle this. You have handled worse confrontations. This is nothing.” My parents arrived less than an hour ago and had been shown into a room to wait for me. Tammy had shown up with two caretakers and had even stayed behind to watch over them while another wolf had led me here. Except now… I have been standing in front of the door for more than five minutes and I just can't seem to get my legs to move. “Come on, Lou,” I whisper again, shaking my fingers out. “Just move.” But I don't. I can't. I thought I could handle this. That I could handle seeing them again, but I can't. All of a sudden, I am that girl again. Hiding from her father. Scared. Alone And then… a hand slips into mine. Warm. Strong. Confident. I lift my head to see Travis standing by my side, his eyes on mine, firm. Warm. “You are not alone you know?” He says quietly. “At least… you don't have to be. I am right here with you, if you
