Sarah Blackwood - 2

last update publish date: 2026-07-10 14:54:49

Nothing happened for ten days.

Then, on the eleventh day, a new face appeared. A woman in her forties, claiming to be a traveling merchant selling herbal remedies. She set up a small stand in the pack market, friendly and unassuming.

"That's her," Elena confirmed after running facial recognition. "Sarah Blackwood. Different hair color, different name, but same person."

"She came back," Marcus breathed. "She actually came back."

"Don't approach yet. We watch, we wait, we catch her in the act." I

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   The Letter Sarah Left Behind-2

Marcus rode with her to the airport, then returned alone."She didn't even wake up to say goodbye," he said later, voice hollow. "Just unconscious in the back of a van, being shipped away like cargo.""That's probably easier. Goodbyes would've made it harder." I sat beside him. "Marcus, you did everything possible. More than most would.""Doesn't feel like enough.""It never does."Luna found me that night with the letter, reading it again."Is that from Sarah?" Luna asked quietly."Yes. To Alice. For when she's older," I showed her. "Read it if you want."Luna read silently, tears falling. "She's already dead in her mind. This is farewell from a ghost.""Don't say that.""Why not? It's true. Sarah decided that dying was preferable to living with her mental illness. Colorado might delay it, but it won't prevent it." Luna folded the letter precisely. "Alice is going to read this someday and realize her birth mother chose suicide over knowing her. That's going to destroy her.""Then we

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   The Letter Sarah Left Behind-1

Day Sarah transferred to ColoradoMarcus found the letter in Sarah's belongings while packing for her transfer.Sealed envelope addressed "To Alice, when she's old enough to understand."His hands shook as he held it."Sera, I need you to see this." He called me to his quarters, voice tight with emotion.I read the envelope, stomach dropping. "Have you opened it?""No. But I'm terrified of what's inside," Marcus said heavily. "What if it's a suicide note? What if she's planning to try again in Colorado and this is her final message to Alice?""Only one way to find out." I carefully opened the envelope. The letter was handwritten, Sarah's familiar script shaky but legible. My dearest Alice,By the time you read this, you'll be old enough to understand some difficult truths. I'm writing this because I may not be alive to tell you myself, and you deserve to know the truth.I gave birth to you. I loved you from the moment I knew you existed. But loving you wasn't enough to make me a good

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   Breaking Marcus-2

"Of course I can, grabby. Someone has to supervise your chaos." Luna stood. "Come on. Let's practice shields outside."They left hand-in-hand, Alice chattering about something complicated involving flowers and magic.Adrian found me watching Marcus sleep."How bad is he?" Adrian sat beside me."Bad enough that Dr. Moira thinks he's weeks from total breakdown. Bad enough that three days without sleep seemed reasonable to him." I leaned against Adrian. "We're moving Sarah to residential treatment in Colorado. Marcus needs distance from constant crisis management.""How's he going to handle that? She's his mate.""Badly probably. But staying will kill him. At least distance gives him a chance to survive." I closed my eyes. "This is what war costs. Not just the ninety-seven who died. The survivors breaking under invisible weight.""We're all breaking a little. Some just hide it better."Marcus woke after eight hours, disoriented and panicked."Sarah! I need to check on Sarah!" He tried to

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   Breaking Marcus-1

Three days after Sarah's attemptMarcus stopped sleeping.I noticed during Coalition Council when he dozed off mid-sentence, jerking awake with wild eyes."Sorry. What were we discussing?" He tried to focus on the reports in front of him."Marcus, when did you last sleep?" I asked carefully."Tuesday. Maybe Monday. I lost track." He rubbed his face. "Doesn't matter. Sleep means nightmares anyway.""It's Thursday. You haven't slept in three days minimum." Katherine stood. "Council is dismissed. Marcus needs medical attention.""I'm fine. Just tired." Marcus tried to stand, but swayed dangerously.Adrian caught him before he collapsed. "You're not fine. You're experiencing severe sleep deprivation. Dr. Moira, now."Marcus didn't fight as we half-carried him to the medical clinic. He was too exhausted to protest.Dr. Moira examined him quickly. "Blood pressure elevated, stress hormones through the roof, cognitive function impaired. Marcus, you're running yourself into the ground.""Can't

He hung up.Luna approached me after Alice ran off to play. "Sarah was here.""How did you know?""Saw her hiding behind the wall. Recognized her from old photos," Luna's voice was careful. "Does Alice know?""No. Marcus said not to tell her.""Good. Alice has enough trauma without adding 'birth mother visited but didn't want to see you' to the list." Luna watched Alice pick flowers. "Is Sarah okay?""No. She's very much not okay. Marcus is trying to find her before she hurts herself.""Will he succeed?""I don't know, baby. I really don't know."Marcus found Sarah six hours later. She'd walked to the cliff at the territory edge, the same place Damien had thrown me from years ago.She was standing at the edge when Marcus arrived."Sarah, step back. Please." Marcus approached slowly."Why? So I can keep existing in agony? Keep being a burden everyone has to manage?" Sarah's voice was calm, resigned. "I'm tired, Marcus. So tired of fighting myself every day.""I know. But Sarah, please.

  • THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH   Sarah's Return-1

Six weeks after the warSarah appeared at the border without warning. The guards called me immediately, voices uncertain. "Alpha, Sarah Reed is requesting entry. She looks bad. What do you want us to do?"My stomach dropped. "Escort her to the Pack House. I'll meet you there."I hadn't seen Sarah in over a year. Not since she'd visited to watch Alice from a distance, broken and unable to face her daughter directly. She looked worse now.Gaunt, hollow-eyed, moving like a ghost. Her clothes hung loose, her hair unwashed, her hands trembling constantly."Sera." Her voice was barely a whisper. "I heard about the war. About the casualties. I needed to know if Alice survived.""Alice is fine. Safe. Healthy." I studied her carefully. "Sarah, what are you doing here?""I don't know. I just started walking and ended up here." Sarah's eyes were unfocused. "Is it true? Ninety-seven dead?""Yes.""Marcus?""Alive. He fought but survived." I hesitated. "Sarah, does he know you're here?""No. I lef
