Purged in the Obsidian Ravine

Bronislava “Slava” Ignatova

The glowing Blood Oath crest hung between our joined hands like a living ember, casting a harsh violet crimson shadow across the ruined cabin of the war skimmer.

Vaelin’s hand was rigid in mine. I could feel the violent, rhythmic pulse of his heart hammering through his leather glove, matching the wild, erratic thrumming in my own chest. The black veins along his arm were shrinking at a terrifying speed, forced backward by the raw, untamed force of my awakening blood.

A Blood Oath Bond.

The words echoed in my head, cold and terrifying. I tried to yank my hand back, a sudden wave of panic choking my throat. “No… take it back! I didn’t mean to…”

“Slava, wait…” Vaelin warned, reaching for me with his free hand.

He was too late. The moment I forcibly tore my fingers from his palm, the crimson crest between us didn’t dissolve. It shattered like brittle glass.

A violent, pressurized shockwave detonated in the center of the cabin.

The force of the magic backlash blew through the open rift in the skimmer’s ceiling, tearing the heavy iron doors right off their hinges. The vessel pitched violently to the left, dropping two hundred feet through the sky in a blinding blur of gray clouds and ice. I lost my footing completely. The floor tilted, and before Vaelin’s outstretched hand could catch the edge of my sleeve, I tumbled backward into the screaming void of the Siberian night.

The wind tore the breath straight out of my lungs.

I fell through the pitch black sky, tumbling through layers of frozen fog, the cold air whipping my hair across my face like rusted wires. Below me, the ground rushed up, not the flat, snow covered forest, but the jagged, yawning jaws of the Obsidian Ravine.

CRASH.

I slammed straight through the thick, snow draped pine canopy at the edge of the canyon. Branches snapped like dry bone against my back, slowing my momentum just enough before I hit the steep, icy slope of the ravine.

I rolled down the embankment, hitting rocks and frozen mud, until I finally slammed into the floor of the gorge.

I lay flat on my back in the knee deep snow drift, staring up at the narrow slit of dark sky high above. The pain hit me a second later, a dull, crushing ache in my ribs, raw scrapes across my arms, and a sickening heat rising from the base of my neck.

I tried to push myself up, but my arms buckled immediately.

“Ah…!” A ragged scream scraped past my lips, dissolving into a fit of harsh, wet coughing.

It wasn’t just the fall. Something far more dangerous was happening inside my body.

The forced severance of the Blood Oath, combined with the extreme physical impact, had shattered the final remnants of the chemical cage Matrena had built inside me. The years of silver laced wolfsbane, the dark, bitter tea she had forced me to drink every morning since I was eight years old, weren’t just burning away anymore.

My blood was violently purging them.

My body began to convolve on the frozen floor of the ravine. A wave of liquid fire exploded through my stomach, rushing outward into my limbs with such agonizing intensity that I clawed at the snow, my fingernails snapping against the hidden ice beneath.

“Stop… please, stop…” I sobbed into the dark, my chest heaving in violent, ragged gasps.

It felt like my veins were being scraped clean with broken glass. I could taste the acrid, metallic tang of silver and wolfsbane on my tongue as black, oily drops of fluid welled up from my throat, spilling past my white, cracked lips into the pure white snow beneath my cheek.

My body was purging eighteen years of quiet, systematic poison in minutes.

Every organ burned. Every bone felt as though it were being melted down and recast in liquid iron. The crimson aura beneath my skin flared out of control, pulsing in jagged, unpredictable bursts that melted the snow drift around me into a pool of bubbling, steaming water.

I dragged my shivering hands to my face, clutching at my head as a sharp, agonizing pressure flared at my scalp.

“My hair…” I gasped through the agony, my sight blurring as I brought a lock of my own hair into view.

The jet black strands I had carried my entire life, the color every Omega in the North Ridge had mocked, were changing. Starting from the roots, a brilliant, terrifying silver was eating through the black, traveling down the strands like a fuse lit on fire.

By the time the surge reached the tips, my hair was no longer black. It was a striking, iridescent blend of dark obsidian and shimmering platinum silver, the legendary mark of a true Blood Alpha royal.

My wolf thrashed inside my chest, no longer a trapped, whimpering ghost, but a wild, ancient force tearing through the broken bars of her cage.

We are unchained, her voice resonated in my mind, deep, fierce, and dripping with a dark, primal rage. Let them burn.

“No…” I choked out, fighting against the sudden, overwhelming wave of dark power threatening to consume my mind. “Not like this…”

I rolled onto my stomach, my hands sinking into the icy slush. The purging process was taking everything I had left. My pulse was racing at a terrifying speed, my lungs burning for clean air as my core temperature spiked to a feverish heat.

I was changing. My body was adapting to a power it had been denied for almost two decades, but the toll was too great.

My vision began to fade into a dark crimson haze. The roaring wind at the top of the ravine sounded smaller, distant, fading into the background of my failing consciousness.

I can’t stay here, I thought, taking one shuddering, painful step forward on my hands and knees before collapsing back into the mud. If I pass out here… the cold will take what the poison didn’t.

Through the haze of my dimming sight, a low, heavy sound echoed down the narrow corridor of the ravine.

Step.

Step.

It wasn’t the sound of a wolf. It was the slow, deliberate crunch of heavy iron shod boots stepping over the frozen rocks.

I forced my head up, my silver black hair falling across my wet face, my eyes straining into the pitch black darkness of the gorge.

A tall figure emerged from the shadow of the rocky cliffs.

He didn’t wear the obsidian cloak of Tsar Vaelin. He didn’t carry the silver crest of the Imperial Guard.

He wore a dark velvet tunic embroidered with silver thread along the collar, a heavy broadsword drawn in his right hand.

Kirill.

He stood ten feet away from me in the narrow ravine, his face pale, his hazel eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of disbelief, horror, and a sudden, dark obsession as he stared down at my glowing, silver black hair and the black poison dripping from my lips.

“Slava…” Kirill whispered, his voice shaking as he took a slow step toward my helpless form. “What… what have you become?”

"Touch only what you must."The lead physician, Dr. Kaelia, raised a slender silver testin
