The Iron Tsar’s Awakening

Tsar Vaelin "The Iron Tsar" Volkov

The obsidian halls of the Iron Peak Citadel were quiet at midnight, save for the low hum of ancient wards pulsing beneath the stone. Outside my observatory windows, the Ural mountains swallowed the Siberian sky in an endless sea of jagged black ice and howling wind.

It was the kind of cold that killed ordinary men in minutes. But cold meant nothing to me. It never had.

I stood before the granite map table, fingers tracing the carved borders of the southern territories. On paper, I was the Tsar of All Russia, the terrifying, undefeated sovereign of the Lycan throne. Shifter lords bowed until their foreheads touched the ice when I entered a room. Rogue warbands scattered at the mere rumor of my shadow.

Yet inside my chest, a slow, agonizing fire was consuming me alive.

I pulled back the cuff of my heavy velvet tunic, looking down at my left forearm.

Beneath my frost-white skin, intricate runic tattoos were inked into muscle, no longer just blue and black. Creeping from wrist toward elbow were thick, jagged lines of pitch-black corruption, veins pulsing with a heat that mirrored the curse buried deep in my bloodline.

Two years, my court physicians had warned in hushed, terrified tones. Two years before the black blood reaches your heart, Your Imperial Majesty. Two years before the beast takes control, and you become the very monster you hunt.

The only thing capable of breaking a blood-hex this ancient was a true Blood Alpha; a rare, legendary lineage thought wiped from the earth two decades ago. For ten excruciating years, my spies had scoured every frozen corner of Russia for even a whisper of that extinct bloodline.

Ten years of dead ends. Ten years of watching the black veins inch closer to my heart.

“You are pushing yourself again, Tsar Vaelin,” a low voice spoke from the arched doorway.

Commander Nikolai stepped into the observatory, iron armor clanking against marble. He carried a leather-bound dispatch scroll, his scarred face grim in the torchlight

“Report, Nikolai,” I said, voice laced with the weight of unyielding Alpha authority. I didn’t turn from the map

“The southern borders are restless, Your Majesty,” Nikolai said, stopping three paces behind me. “The North Ridge Pack is suffering heavy losses along their perimeter. Rogue incursions have increased threefold this fortnight.”

I sneered. “The North Ridge Pack is led by a weak boy playing at being an Alpha. Kirill Rostov possesses neither the stomach for war nor the wisdom to protect his people. If his territory falls to rogues, it is his own arrogance that will dig his grave.”

“Be that as it may, my Lord,” Nikolai continued, “Lord Volkova has sent three emissaries begging for the Citadel’s protection. He offers timber, silver, and political allegiance.”

“Let him beg,” I replied coldly. “I do not bleed for greedy Beta lords who trade their honor for coin. Tell them the Iron Peak does not meddle in small-pack politics.”

“Understood, Tsar.” Nikolai hesitated, gripping the scroll tighter. “There is… one more thing. A strange report from scouts near the Blood Forest.”

I turned slowly to face him, amber-gold eyes narrowing. “Speak.”

“An hour ago, our sensory wards registered a massive localized anomaly,” Nikolai said, brow furrowing. “Brief—under three seconds—but strong enough to crack glass in the eastern watchtower. A sudden, violent thermal spike in the middle of a sub-zero blizzard.”

My heart gave a sudden, heavy thud against my ribs.

“A thermal spike?” I echoed, stepping toward him. The weight of my aura flared, making the wall torches flicker and dim. “In the Blood Forest? That’s dead land. Nothing survives there, let alone generates heat enough to shatter ward glass.”

“We assumed a rift spell, cast by a rogue witch,” Nikolai offered. “We have a squad preparing to investigate at dawn—”

“No,” I cut him off, a sharp, electric static snapping across my nerves.

It was a feeling I had never known in twenty-nine years of life. Deep beneath my skin, right where the black curse burned, my inner beast slammed massive paws against the walls of my mind.

He didn’t growl in pain. He didn’t roar in fury.

He awakened.

A sharp, unbearable pull tugged at the center of my soul, orienting my face south, toward the distant, freezing taiga. The air in my lungs turned to liquid fire. A metallic taste filled my mouth, laced with the phantom scent of crushed pine, fresh snow, and rich, golden blood.

Blood Alpha.

The thought slammed into my brain like a thunderbolt.

It wasn’t a rogue witch. It wasn’t a storm anomaly.

A Blood Alpha lineage, dormant, buried, dying, had just unleashed its raw flare into the Siberian night.

“My Lord?” Nikolai stepped forward, hand dropping to his sword hilt. “Your eyes… they’re glowing.”

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t.

My inner beast roared, a deafening, primal sound that drowned out the howl of the wind outside. The invisible thread attached to my soul snapped taut, dragging me south with a force violent enough to buckle my knees.

Whoever possessed that blood was dying. I could feel it. The flare was a final, desperate gasp of a soul freezing in the dark, calling out before it snuffed out.

“Prepare the war-skimmers,” I commanded, voice dropping an octave, carrying the full weight of the Iron Tsar.

Nikolai blinked. “Now? A level-five blizzard is tearing through the pass. Flying the mountains right now is suicide”

I turned on him, golden eyes burning like molten brass, the black veins on my arm flaring violent and bright.

“I don’t care if the sky itself collapses, Nikolai,” I growled, stepping past him as my fur cloak billowed behind me. “Assemble the elite guard. We fly to the Blood Forest tonight.”

I stopped at the threshold, looking out into the pitch-black storm raging over the mountains. The pull in my chest dragged at me desperate, screaming, impossibly close.

“Hold on,” I whispered into the freezing night, my voice swallowed by the storm. “Hold on… I am coming for you.”

The sub zero Siberian blizzard howled above the rock face, but down here in the shadow of the valley, the air smelled of ozone, copper, and raw, terrifying slaughter.Three massive rogues, beasts that would have taken a full North Ridge hunting party to bring down, lay motionless around me, torn apart in less than three seconds.I could barely lift my chin from the snow.
