You Are My Ruin

POV: Bronislava "Slava" Ignatova

The threat of midnight hung in the air like an iron blade. Eight hundred miles away, Matrena and my former pack were burning a master vial of my unsealed blood over a dark altar, trying to collapse my heart before the clock struck twelve.

I didn't give Vaelin a chance to answer Nikolai's panicked warning in the sanctuary. As the dark blood claim spell spiked violently in my chest, pain shot through my sternum like liquid fire, and the world went completely black.

When awareness finally crawled back into my head, the agonizing tightness in my chest had subsided into a dull, hot thrumming.

My lungs burned as I dragged air back into my throat, gasping sharply as my eyes snapped open. I was no longer in the cold granite sanctuary with the trembling doctors. I was lying in a massive four-poster bed framed by pillars of carved obsidian. Rich crimson silk sheets were draped over my legs, and a roaring hearth across the grand bedchamber bathed the room in a deep, flickering amber glow.

The air smelled rich and heavy, thick with the scent of crushed pine, vanilla, and hot iron.

Vaelin.

Panic flared instantly through my veins. Eighteen years of abuse had conditioned me to view every room I didn't recognize as a trap, every highborn Alpha as a tormentor. My unsealed Blood Alpha instincts, still raw and volatile from the poison purge, screamed at me to defend myself.

I sat up too fast, the room tilting dangerously. My hand swept across the polished nightstand beside the mattress, my fingers locking around something cold and metallic.

A silver butter knife.

It was small, dull, and entirely useless against a true Lycan, but to my cornered mind, it was steel. I scrambled back toward the carved wooden headboard, pulling my knees up, clutching the handle so tightly my knuckles turned white.

A quiet rustle of fabric sounded near the hearth.

Vaelin stepped out of the shadows. He had stripped off his heavy armor and bare-chested furs, wearing only a loose charcoal linen shirt and dark trousers. His platinum hair fell slightly over his forehead, and deep shadows bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He looked exhausted, yet his towering frame still commanded every inch of space in the room.

"Slava," he murmured softly, raising his hands, palms open as he took a slow step toward the bed. "You are safe. The midnight deadline passed. I disrupted their altar's anchor through the ward stones."

"Stay back!" I rasped.

My voice sounded wild and cracked, layered with the strange, double-tonal echo of my wolf. The sight of his massive form approaching triggered every survival mechanism in my body.

Vaelin didn't stop. He took another step, his molten gold eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding intensity.

Driven by pure, frantic instinct, I didn't think. I lunged.

I threw myself off the pillows, launching my small body straight at him. I was still weak, my limbs shaking from the lingering venom, but my awakened blood gave me a dangerous burst of speed. I slammed into his chest with everything I had, driving him back a single pace until his broad shoulders clipped the carved obsidian pillar of the bed frame.

I pulled myself up, my left hand clutching the open collar of his linen shirt, and shoved the dull silver edge of the knife directly against the pulse point on his throat.

"I said stay back!" I breathed, my face inches from his. My entire body trembled so violently that the dull metal rattled against his warm skin. "Don't come near me!"

The room fell dead silent, save for the crackle of the hearth fire and my own ragged, desperate breaths.

Vaelin didn't strike me. He didn't unleash his suffocating aura to crush me to the floorboards. His hands remained open at his sides, his chest rising and falling in heavy, controlled surges against my knuckles.

Slowly, his eyes drifted down to the dull blade pressed against his throat, then back up to meet mine. A faint, dangerous heat ignited in the depths of his golden gaze.

"If you want to cut me, little wolf," Vaelin whispered, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly rasp that sent a jolt straight through my stomach, "you need to press harder than that."

Before I could process his words, Vaelin moved.

He didn't pull away. Instead, his large, calloused hands reached up, sliding smoothly around my waist. With effortless, terrifying strength, he lifted me off my feet and turned, pressing my back flat into the soft mattress.

A sharp gasp tore from my throat as the world spun.

Vaelin didn't let go. He stepped right into my space, his towering frame crowding over me as he settled between my parted knees. His broad chest pinned mine into the mattress, his heavy hips settling firmly between my thighs until there wasn't a single inch of air left between us.

The silver knife slipped from my fingers, clattering uselessly against the stone floor.

"Vaelin..." I choked out, my hands flying to his broad shoulders to push him off.

He didn't move. He leaned down further, his weight pressing me deep into the silk sheets. My thighs naturally framed his hard, muscular hips, trapping us in a position so shockingly intimate that my breath locked in my throat. The sheer, overwhelming heat radiating off his body flooded my senses, melting away my aggression and replacing it with a thick, suffocating wave of pure electricity.

His gaze tracked down my face, lingering on my mouth. His lips were inches from mine, so close I could feel the searing warmth of his breath against my lower lip.

"You came at me with steel," Vaelin growled softly into my mouth, his thumb sliding up my neck to rest gently against my jawline, anchoring my head to the pillow. "You bared your teeth at a Tsar. Do you have any idea what that does to my beast?"

A dark, electric shiver shot straight down my spine, pooling low in my belly. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, no longer from fear, but from the terrifying, intoxicating friction of his body pressed flush against mine. My inner wolf let out a low, contented purr, stretching greedily toward his heat.

"I am not... your captive," I rasped, struggling to hold his molten gaze as his thumb smoothed over my lower lip, leaving a trail of liquid fire behind.

"No," Vaelin agreed, his voice dropping into an agonizingly slow, gravelly whisper that vibrated down my neck. "You are my ruin."

He lowered his head, his lips brushing the sensitive skin just beneath my ear. The deliberate, agonizingly slow touch made my back arch off the mattress, a soft, breathless gasp escaping me before I could bite it back.

He didn't rush. His heavy hips pressed firmly against mine, pinning me into the velvet, anchoring me to his raw, overwhelming presence. Every rise and fall of his chest rubbed against mine through the thin linen of his shirt, leaving me completely at the mercy of the suffocating, slow-burning heat threatening to consume us both.
