POV: VAREK

The kid says her name.

“Malia.”

The sound of it stops me cold.

Not slow. Not soft. It hits hard. Like a punch straight to my chest. Like I forget how to stand.

I can't help but stare at him in complete shock, frozen. I don’t blink. My hands feel wrong. Too heavy. Too far away from me.

“No,” I say. My voice cracks. I hate that it cracks. “You don’t know that name. How do you know that name? Did your mother tell you about her?”

The boy just looks at me. He is small. Too small for this. His eyes are big. Bright. Too bright for the dark. And yet… It is like he sees everything. Knows everything.

I shouldn't be surprised though. He has her blood running through his veins.

“You are sad,” he says. Not asking. Just saying it. Like it’s a fact.

I take a step back and the porch creaks under my boot.

“Don’t say that name again,” I tell him. “And no, I am not sad.”

He frowns. “But she cried. And it made you sad.”

My wolf surges as the pain rolls through me. Hot and sharp.
