ALESSANDRO

I sat at the head of the table, my fingers drummed lazily in the arms rest. The Mexico deal had dragged into its third hour, my patience was wearing thin. Charts were up, screens were shared.

“The Sinaloa contact wants thirty percent. We’ve already negotiated down from forty-five.” Oscar reported, flipping through the digital reports.

I leaned back, eyes narrowing. “They are bleeding us, and they know it. They’re desperate, not confident. No one else will buy from them. Cut it to twenty-five and throw in custom protection. If they won’t budge, we walk.”

Andrea hesitated. “If we walk, we lose the southern port.”

I looked up to him slowly. “Then we build a new one.”

Silence.

“Andrea.” I was still looking at him. “Make the call and set the travel plan. I will go to Mexico myself.”

“Yes sir.”

The meeting adjourned.

Everyone stood up and started gathering their papers. I took out my phone from my pocket, I had silenced it to avoid distractions during the meeting.

ELENA The soft beeping of the monitor was the only sound in the room. I stirred slowly, my body ached all over. my back felt like it had been snapped in half. My throat was too dry. I reached for the table and grabbed some water. I turned my head to the left, the bassinet was there. So was the baby. She was wrapped in a soft hospital blanket, tiny fists balled under her chin, she slept soundly.A hand gently touched my arm.“Hey,” came Alessia’s soft voice. “You’re awake.I blinked. Surprised that she was still here. “How long have I been out?”“Almost six hours.”Six hours?I tried to sit up, but I felt a sharp pain across my stomach and thighs. Alessia found the button by the side of the bed, pressed it and the bed sat up.“You did it,” she said, smiling sweetly. “She’s perfect.”I looked at my baby and felt an intense feeling of love and pride. “I didn’t think it would hurt that much.” I whispered. No one ever does.A pause.I bit my lip. “Where’s he?”Alessia went quiet.Of co

ELENATwo months came by faster than I expected. My belly had grown round and low. Every movement was made carefully. I don’t go out much these days, I sit here in my art studio painting all day.I had found a perfect piece to paint. It goes well with the theme of the art exhibition. ‘A replica of Mother Nature.’ A large canvas sat upright on the easel, I had decided a mother and a child painting was the perfect thing to paint. The woman on the canvas had her back to the viewers, holding a baby to her chest. The mother’s hair was long and red falling around her face. And though I hadn’t painted the baby yet, I find myself staring at the unfinished space where the baby should be. I zone out a lot these days. I dipped my brush and touched it to the canvas, but paused. My hand hover mid air, suddenly trembling. I felt a slow ache at my lower back. I shifted on the stool and placed a hand on my belly.Just a Braxton hick I told myself. They've been happening more lately. My due date wa

ELENAAlessandro was avoiding me like I was a plague. After that night in my bathroom, we had hardly spoken up to ten words to each other. It’s been a week and I couldn’t care less. I sat in my art studio, paint in hand as I stared at the canvas. I had converted one of the free rooms to an art studio and the other one to a nursery for the baby. The interior decorator was coming in today to get the room ready. I wanted to have an idea on what to paint before she arrived, but my mind is blank.A knock came on the door, I looked up to Maria holding a tray in hand. “Care for a light snack?”“Yes please,” I sighed and dropped my brushes. I took the tray from her and took a bite of the cookies and the orange juice. My pregnancy cravings are not craving anything at all. “Where is he?” I had to ask because I hadn’t seen him here. “He’s been in and out. Looks busy these days.”“Hmm,” I nodded, trying not to look like I cared much. “Thank you Maria.” I handed the plate back to her and conti

ELENAThe morning sunlight leaked through the curtains. I slowly opened my eyes and stretched my body. My limbs felt heavy but not in a painful way, just tired. Sitting up, I exhaled and reached for my phone in my nightstand. I needed to go visit the hospital. After yesterday, I wanted to make sure everything is fine. I texted Alessia.Me: Can you come with me to the hospital today? I wanted to my antenatal check-up.Alessia: Of Course. I will be there in an hour. I placed the phone back down and dragged myself to the bathroom. The bathwater scent a reminder of last night. The memory of Alessandro’s hand on me, gentle. Soft. I shoved the thoughts down. I showered and got dressed in a loose beige gown. My hair was packed in a ponytail. I made my way downstairs where one of the staff handed me my breakfast. “Thank you,” I said and sat down to eat. I barely finished it before Alessia arrived, her dark sunglasses and blunt red bob making her look as intimidating as she is.“You look

ALESSANDRO I wasn’t supposed to feel this way. Not while I stripped her clothes, Not while I wrung the washcloth and brushed it over her arms, her legs, her back. Not while she sat there, limp from exhaustion, staring at me like she couldn’t understand the man in front of her.Hell, I didn’t recognize myself too.I rinsed the cloth again, jaw clenched tight, focusing on the slow rhythm of cleaning her skin. Her breathing had steadied, but her eyes stayed on me, wide and confused.Good. She should be confused. I was too. This wasn’t love. It was possession. Rage. My head was filled with images of her and Alex. I knew Alex was going to be an issue, I just didn’t know it was this soon. How were they coincidentally in the same place? Was it a planned meet up? What were they talking about that had her all giggling? If it wasn’t for public decency, I would have dealt with him right there. I hated that I noticed how delicate her skin feels under my touch. She was the daughter of my enem
