Seraphina froze as a small, unmistakable pressure pressed against the inside of her ribs. Five tiny fingers. A palm no larger than a coin, mapping the contour of her heart with startling clarity. Her breath caught hard in her throat.

"Elara?" she whispered.

The tiny hand curled into a fist. Seraphina’s knees buckled under a sudden wave of vertigo, but Kael caught her by the waist before she hit the stone floor.

"Seraphina!" he shouted, his face tight with alarm.

"I can feel her," she breat

  • THE NIGHT MY MATE BURNED ME ALIVE    CHAPTER 162: The Hand He Couldn't Let Go

“I was holding someone's hand.”The crowned warrior stared at his fingers. His right hand trembled slightly, and he pressed it against the edge of the table.Seraphina watched him carefully.“Can you remember whose hand it was?”“No. I remember the fingers. They were small.”“A child's hand?” Kael asked.“I don't know.” The warrior rubbed his thumb against his palm. “It was cold. Someone was pulling me backward, and the person in front of me was trying to hold on.”“Did you let go?” Aurelith asked. His head lifted.“No.”The voice beneath the floor gave a faint scrape.“He let go.”The warrior stiffened.Kael stepped toward the eastern wall. “You've been accusing him of leaving someone. If you know what happened, tell us.”“He knows.”“Then let him remember.”A low sound travelled beneath their feet.“He chose which hand to keep.”The warrior gripped the table.“I didn't choose to leave anyone.”“You chose which one crossed.”Seraphina moved closer. “What does that mean to you?”He sh

  • THE NIGHT MY MATE BURNED ME ALIVE    CHAPTER 161: The Name He Couldn't Speak

“I know the name,” the crowned warrior whispered. “I just can't say it.”Seraphina stayed beside him. His fingers were still dug into the chair, and a tremor ran through his knuckles. She'd seen him struggle with broken memories before, but this was different. He seemed to be fighting to keep something from slipping out.“Don't force it,” she said. “Tell us what you remember around it.”He took a breath. “A corridor. A lamp burning near the floor. Someone behind me, close enough that I could feel their breath against my neck. They said the name once. I turned, and they told me not to repeat it.”“Did you recognize the person?” Kael asked.“No. I never saw their face.”Aurelith opened the inventory again. “The child said its mother warned that you mustn't speak the name until you knew which door was open. That suggests the name was connected to a particular chamber or person.”“Or the voice wants us to believe that,” Kael replied. The child sat very still beside Rowan. “Mother said the

  • THE NIGHT MY MATE BURNED ME ALIVE    CHAPTER 160: The Passage That was Left Open

“Keeper, you left me on the wrong side.”Nobody moved. The voice had come from beneath the fallen section of floor. Seraphina could hear breathing below them, uneven and shallow. It sounded close enough to reach, yet the darkness concealed whoever was making it.Kael tightened his grip on her arm. “Everyone step back.”Aurelith moved away from the opening, keeping her eyes on the exposed stones. The crowned warrior remained where he stood, staring into the passage.“Do you recognize that voice?” Seraphina asked. He swallowed. “I've heard it before. I know that much.”“Where?”“I can't remember.”Kael crouched several feet from the opening. The passage descended at an angle, its sides lined with old stone blocks. A narrow metal plate had been fixed to one wall, almost hidden beneath the dirt.“There's something attached to the wall,” he said.Aurelith approached carefully. “Don't touch it.”“I wasn't planning to.”She leaned forward to inspect the plate. Three shallow cuts ran across i

  • THE NIGHT MY MATE BURNED ME ALIVE    CHAPTER 159: The One Beneath the Stone

“You buried the wrong one, Keeper.”The crowned warrior stood staring at the eastern corridor door. His fingers trembled against his palm, and his jaw tightened as he struggled to understand what he'd just heard. Seraphina still held his arm. Beneath her hand, the muscles in his forearm had gone rigid.“What does that mean?” she asked. He shook his head. “I don't know.”“Do you remember burying someone?”“I remember closing a chamber. I remember being told nobody could enter again.”Kael lowered his sword slightly. “The voice wants us to believe you buried someone. We don't know whether it's telling the truth.”Aurelith remained beside the table, watching the warrior. “Even if he did bury someone, the statement might refer to something other than a body. We need to establish what happened before accepting the accusation.”The child had retreated into the corner. It wiped its cheeks with its sleeve, leaving damp streaks across its face. Seraphina released the warrior and crouched besid

  • THE NIGHT MY MATE BURNED ME ALIVE    CHAPTER 158: The Voice Behind the Door

“Keeper.”The crowned warrior stood motionless.“You brought it back.”The voice came from beyond the eastern corridor door. It sounded male, low and strained, as though the speaker had been shouting for a long time.Kael moved in front of Seraphina. Rowan approached the map room entrance, but Aurelith stopped him.“Don't open it.”“The guards are outside,” Rowan said.“Tell them to move away from the entrance.”Rowan knocked twice and gave the order. Footsteps retreated along the corridor. The voice spoke again.“Why are you keeping me waiting?”The crowned warrior took a step forward.Seraphina caught his arm. “You recognize that voice?”“No.”“Then why are you moving towards it?”His eyes remained fixed on the door. “It called me Keeper.”“That title appeared in the inventory,” Aurelith said. “It doesn't establish who is speaking.”The voice gave a short laugh.“You still need records to tell you who I am?”Aurelith's expression tightened.Kael looked at the warrior. “Does the voice

  • THE NIGHT MY MATE BURNED ME ALIVE    CHAPTER 157: What the Cord Was Hiding

“I wasn't wearing it when I left the chamber. Someone put it back on me afterwards.”The crowned warrior kept his eyes on the leather cord. His fingers remained pressed against his throat, as though he could still feel the weight of the metal against his skin.Seraphina studied him. “Do you remember who removed it?”“No. I remember someone pulling it from behind me. I thought they were taking it away.”“And you didn't put it back on?”“I don't remember doing that.”Kael moved closer to the table. “Then we need to find out what this thing was used for before we decide why someone returned it to you.”Aurelith lifted the cord with a strip of linen. The leather had been cut near its fastening point. She examined the rough fibres, then turned the metal fitting towards the light.“This wasn't ordinary damage,” she said. “Someone cut through the cord.”Rowan leaned forward. “Could it have happened when the wall was sealed?”“Possibly. The condition of the leather alone cannot tell us when.”
