Dorien had swiftly rejoined, and moments later, they had all felt a presence as Marian joined the group.

Marian’s connection had been completely open and pliant. There had been no reservation in her connection.

Before Dax could utter a word, Marian had supplicated.

“My Alpha, I greet you. Father, I greet you. Mother Luna, my Noble Alpha, my warrior brothers, I greet you all,” she commented steadily, her tone humble, her greeting to the Betas reminding them of who and what she was.

“I have done something without permission, but I am not here to apologize for it. That would demean everyone involved.”

“My heart calls to Reyland, your son, my Alpha, and I present myself to ask for your mercy.”

“This one time, my Alpha, for any love you may have had for me, when I was young, when you cared for me, please, Alpha, let me stay with Reyland.”

“I will never harm him. I will never hurt

Reyland did not move, did not speak. He knew his father well. This could not be rushed.Dax circled Reyland, twice.“What…has happened?” Dax whispered hoarsely.Reyland smiled in his heart. He had expected, ‘what have you done’ or ‘what has she done to you’, but instead, his father, the Alpha of Lightmoon pack, the wolf he respected and loved more than any who had ever existed, had asked a question that did not cast blame on anyone. He wanted to kneel, to kiss his father’s bare feet, but this was not the time.“Her blood, father, it is like fire,” Reyland replied in awe as he watched his father assess him.“Are you in pain?” Dax asked slowly.“No. I feel strong, I feel energized. It’s like there is electricity running through me,” Reyland responded confidently.“When did you notice this?” Dax inquired breathily.“I didn’t. It happened after we – I ingested her blood and I woke up like this,” Reyland said, editing the events for his father’s ears, and the wellness of his father’s mind.

“Because of their unique lineage, red wolves found it difficult to impossible to find mates among other wolves,” Corien continued steadily.“Many regular, other wolves, could not stand the red wolf. Their rage, their inclination to fight, to seek out wars – joining them, or starting them – their proclivity for being surrounded by pain or strife.”“So even if mates were found, who were not red wolves themselves, many were rejected, that alone kept their numbers small.”Corien drank from his water and proceeded calmly at a steady pace, his tone somewhat nostalgic.Corien, Gravan, and Marian had all blocked all sound from reaching unwanted ears.Their conversation, from the very beginning, had been private.“But they were warriors, raiders, what they could not get with affection, they took by force. And for their troubles, their offspring were hunted, abused, used, for what their blood and parts could give.”“Those who survived kept thei

“I’m going to answer your question while telling you what I promised, Marian. Please don’t interrupt.”“Okay, Dad.”He nodded, still facing the wall.He exhaled loudly and sat back in his chair. He crossed his leg, ankle over knee, and rested his arms.Eyes closed, he spoke. No one interrupted.“Red wolves, fire wolves, are gifted with sight. Foresight. Not all of them, and some more strongly than others. This Sight could be easy to understand, or it could be confusing. When it’s confusing, we need help from seers, Elders, witches, other sources,” he began in his deep, steady voice, which sounded like water rushing over rocks. His pace was not fast, not slow.He continued, keeping his eyes closed and his mind calm, his breathing was steady, and his energy, his vibration, was firm.“When it’s clear, there’s no need for outside help.”“I have a loosely related power to the Sight. I have dreams. Not all the ti

At the back of her mind, Marian hugged her giant, her plushie bear, as she shook her head mentally at herself for resisting his decision to leave. If Alpha Dax had seen him the way he looked before he left here, I don’t think I would still be breathing, she mused distractedly, while bearing the weight of Dax’s hot anger.Marian had decided not to dredge anything up, but she would not hide either. She was done hiding.“I lay with him,” she replied flatly.“And?” Alpha Dax growled.“Nothing, Alpha,” she responded flatly.Dax had sensed her hesitation.“I. Will. Kill. You,” he stated slowly, each word spoken on its own.His link had flared up again, this time directed at her.Marian gasped, recalling how he had choked her on Christmas morning, using only his mind, and quickly, carefully, she spoke up.Just before she began her recount, she re

Marian laughed. But it was not directed at Dorien. It was a self-abasing chuckle.“To think that I had been under your spell once,” she said, her voice almost a whisper.Louder, in a stronger voice, she continued, “Dorien Aldon, I will never have anything to do with you or your household.”“Let’s keep it that way, shall we?” she concluded, her voice tight, her eyes clear, her lips quivering.Dorien’s eyes roamed over her face.“You’re lying to me,” he whispered, shaking his head slowly.“Yes,” she whispered back, “but only partly. I loved you once, and I will continue to believe that you cared for me as well.”“But things changed. I changed, but so did you. I don’t care to hear it,” she said quickly, raising a hand and looking away as his face fell and lips parted. In a firm, quiet tone, she continued, “Let’s stop here, Dorien. You and me. Right here. I want Reyland. And only the moon goddess herself can keep him

No matter what, this is not my problem, is it? Marian mused as she watched Dorien, her eyes not quite meeting his, but not looking away from him either.I haven’t done anything here.I didn’t cause any of this. It’s not like Dorien and I were mated, and I stepped out on him with his brother. We were already done, and HE was the one who broke us up.I never knew Reyland.I didn’t target him.I wasn’t looking to have anything to do with Dax or any member of his family.I was supposed to leave, today.Get here, spend time with my father, do my duty to my mother and Jake. And get out.But in the end…I couldn’t do any of these things. Not a single one.Her pulse quickened as her heart sank for a moment, as she reminded herse

Marian had pulled his knife from his back and placed the blade underneath his chin, raising hers in silent command. The pack Beta raised his chin in response to her order, but his hard eyes issued a silent dare as he gazed down at her, lips pursed.Marian smiled mischievously at him.She shifted her eyes to the Alpha heir, now the only one left from the impromptu conclave. He had witnessed the whole exchange. He stared at her with a hunger that should have been hidden, but he could not disguise. Not anymore.THIS was the woman he had fallen for.THIS was HIS Marian. She straightened her head, and her smile widened as she held the blade against Beta Brock.==========Brock was the pack Beta.Of course, he was strong; he was powerful. But at that moment, he was also injured.Healed, physically, yes, but his mind was not yet steady. This was the wolf who had nearly killed him three days ag

Breaking through the throng, the pack doctor, Byron, rushed forward, speaking to both shifted alphas in the mind space, his hands outstretched in a calming gesture. The Luna, seeing the order the Alpha heir had brought, joined in the link as Dorien also reentered. Both Betas checked their flanks and the positions of their closest allies and quickly joined the link as well. And right there before the whole pack, a silent conclave took place. The situation was dangerous. The seven most significant pack members in Lightmoon.Their Alpha, Dax.Their former Alpha, Corien,The two Betas. The Luna. The Alpha Heir. The pack doctor. We're all occupied.Even though a link only took a moment to break, to have such powerful pack members ‘away’ from the pack was unsafe. The Lightmoon pack never let go of their vigilance, no matter what.Their system was simple, it was the same rul
