Three days.

That’s how long the new mark in the ash had continued to vibrate in a steady motion like a beating heart in the earth. No one spoke about it, they all just watched in silence. Their eyes flicked skyward with unease, waiting, watching for something that hadn’t yet arrived. Something was coming and that they were all certain about.

Isabella stood on the edge of the cliffs, in deep thoughts, watching the packs as they were rebuilding. More out of habit now, splitting firewood, beefing up the watchtowers, and repairing all that had been broken in the battle, but their eyes never strayed far from the sky. There was a quiet fear settling over them all, an unspoken fear that the worst wasn’t behind them.

Lyon hadn’t spoken since the First Wolf vanished. It was not because he couldn’t but because he didn’t want to. He had seen something in the fractured sky. Something worse than what had already come, something that lingered just out of reach, waiting to make its move.
