LOGINI sat in my office, the pink stone glowing faintly on my desk. The room is quiet except for the faint ticking of the clock and the scratching of my pen against a parchment. Stupid reports from the border, requests from council about if I had found my mate yet. Like those fools aren't aware that I've not.
I lean back, pressing the bridge of my nose. "They are mocking me," I mutter, picking up the pink stone on my desk. It flickers faintly as if in response. "I'm possibly cursed. A twenty three years old royal wolf with no mate, definitely cursed." I could feel the ache burning in my heart, reminding me of the fact that I'm not complete.
I grab my necklace pendant, rubbing it against the pink rock. "Why did it lead me to you? What mystery is hidden…"
"Huh?" I sniff noisily like a hungry dog as a scent, soft and sweet like jasmine mixed with wild honey and a pint of cinnamon waffles through the air, sharp enough to make my throat close.
My pen slips from my fingers as I freeze. My muscles lock as the scent wraps around me, invading every corner of my office.
Just then, a familiar feminine hum sounded behind me and I look around to see…
"Eliza?" I called.
She startles slightly from where she was arranging scrolls by the shelves. I did not even notice her entering. She turns, dressed in the familiar blue uniform for palace maids, her brown curls pinned neatly, a faint smudge of dust on her cheek.
"Yes, Your Highness," she says quickly, moving a bit forward and bowing her head. "Forgive me, I didn't mean to disturb. The Head Maid said to clean your study before dinner."
My heartbeat stumbles as the scent intensifies the moment she steps closer. Eliza was my playmate when my mother was still alive until she suddenly changed on her eighteenth birthday and started staying away from me, mostly avoiding me like a plague.
"Eliza," I say again, slower this time. "You… smell different."
Her hands paused mid-movement, the cloth crumpling between her fingers. "I beg your pardon, sire?"
"That scent," I murmur, my gaze sharpening. "It's… Mine."
"Eliza…" I breathe out her name, half in awe, half in disbelief. "It's you. You're my mate."
Her eyes widened for a second — just long enough for me to see the flicker of panic there — before her expression shifts.
"Your Highness—"
"It's you," I repeat, rising from my chair. The words came out rough, unsteady. "The reason I've never felt the bond… is what I don't understand when you have been right here all along."
She steps back, shaking her head. "Please, don't."
"Eliza." My tone softens. "You feel it too right? I know you do."
Her breathing quickens. "It doesn't matter what I feel."
"It does to me."
"No, it shouldn't!" She snapped. She takes another step back, glaring angrily at me. "You think fate makes the choice for us? You think I will let some stupid bond decides who I love?"
"Eliza—"
"I'm in love with someone else," she blurts.
"…What?"
She clenches her fists. "I love your brother. I want him, not you."
For a moment, I swear I did not hear her right.
"You're joking." I laughed
"I'm not."
"Eliza." I spat, my voice coming out sharper than I intended, "You don't love him. You can't love him. You're mine."
"I don't belong to anyone!" she snapped back, her eyes blazing. "Maybe him, but definitely not to a weak man like you. I choose who I love."
I take a breath and a step closer despite my hurting heart. "When?" I ask quietly. "When did this happen? You've known we're mare for a long while" I stated
Her gaze falters for the briefest second. "It doesn't matter."
"Tell me the truth."
She exhales shakily, eyes darting to the door, then back to me. "When I clocked eighteen. I'm sorry but your brother, he's everything I want in a man."
"Eliza…" My voice drops, almost a whisper. "I can be whatever you want in a man, please …"
"But you'll never be."
I shake my head slowly, my heart pounding too loud. "What you have is a lie. You're my mate, Eliza."
"A term I hate so much. Do you know how far I had gone just to hide it?"
I blink. "Hiding it?" I thought she had just been good at avoiding me.
She lets out a bitter laugh, "I've been taking a acotinum every moon to mask my scent, to keep you from noticing."
My blood runs cold. "You've been— what? That's dangerous for your health. Where did you get it?"
She lifts her chin up. "I got it from the witch market. Burned in my quarters and brewed into bitter tea. Anything to stay invisible to you."
"You've been poisoning yourself just to avoid me?"
"To avoid this," she spits. "This ridiculous claim that I'm meant to spend my life chained to someone I don't love."
"I can't stop," I say quietly. "The bond won't let me."
"Then you'll have to reject me. I can't reject you because of your royal blood but you can reject me to spare us this shit"
I reach for her arm before I can stop myself. "Please. Don't go."
She jerks back like my touch burns her. "You don't understand. He loves me and I love him too. That's something you can't force."
She turned, gathered her cleaning cloth with trembling hands, "I'll be awaiting your rejection my lord." and slammed the door behind her.
Amelia's POV The carriage rolled out of the portal, coming to a stop, and I could hear the murmuring of voices outside. Kealen straightened, adjusting his collar with a sign. "We're here," he said, “Mia, make sure they don’t get lost throughout our stay here.” “Yes your highness!” She whispered softly. “It’s a bit disheartening that you would think I would get lost though.” I attempted a pout, knowing I probably look like a confused owl with a wonky beak. Mia was already peeking through the curtains, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Your Highness, there are... there are so many of them. And they're all so..." "Good looking?" Kealen supplied, his voice flat. "Yes, I know. The vampire clans have a reputation." "Good looking isn't the word I was going for," Mia whispered. "I was going to say terrifying. They're all so pale and still, like statues that might suddenly come to life." Kealen ignored us and opened the carriage door. The moment he stepped out, a wave of whispers rippled t
Amelia's POVThe carriage fell into a heavy silence, broken only by Mia's ragged breathing and the distant sound of the guards finishing off the remaining bandits outside. The man on the floor lay still, his blood seeping into the wooden planks beneath him, creating a dark stain that seemed to grow larger by the second.Mia hadn't moved. She stood frozen, the sword still clutched in her trembling hands, her grey eyes fixed on the body at her feet. Her face had gone pale— paler than I thought possible and her lips were parted in a silent scream that never quite escaped."I killed him," she whispered again, her voice cracking. "I actually killed him."I shook off the lingering dizziness from being thrown against the wall and hopped closer to her, my heart aching at the sight of her distress. She looked so young in that moment—just a child who had been forced to do something no child should ever have to do.The carriage door swung open, and Kealen appeared, his sword still drawn. His eye
Amelia's PovMia was still talking, her words tumbling over each other in her excitement."I've read so many books about dragons. There's one in the palace library that's supposed to be a complete account of dragon history, but it's written in some ancient language that no one can translate. I've been trying to learn it for years, but it's really hard. Do you think Ruby's history is in that book? Do you think she knows her history? Do dragons have culture? Do they have families? Do they—""Mia," Kealen interrupted gently. "You need to breathe."
Amelia's POVThe carriage swayed gently as it rolled along the uneven road, the rhythmic clatter of hooves and wheels creating a hypnotic melody. I watched from my cage by Kealen's side as the palace grew smaller and smaller in the distance, until it was nothing more than a speck from afar.It felt strange, leaving behind the only place I had known since arriving in this world. Strange and a little terrifying. The trees moved in the opposite direction, a blur of green and brown as we passed through the forest. Birds chirped overhead, and somewhere in the distance, I could hear the sound of running water.Ruby was asleep by my side, her tiny body warm against my feathers. She had barely stirred since we left, mostly eating and sleeping was her routine plus being exhausted from everything that had happened. I couldn't blame her. I was exhausted too."You know," I said through our telepathic link, "for someone who's supposed to be banished, you seem awfully relaxed."Kealen was leaning
[Pov: Amelia]"She's old enough to know what she's doing.""She's still a child!"Mia, oblivious to my internal protests, was studying me with a look of pure wonder."Your feathers," she murmured. "They look so soft. Can I touch you?"I looked at Kealen again."I think I’ll like her," I said. "She keeps asking permission. How is a thirteen-year-old more respectful than most adults?""Because she was raised right," Kealen replied. "And yes, you may touch her. Gently."I huffed."Fine. But if she pulls a feather, I'm pecking her."Mia reached into the cage slowly, her fingers hovering just above my feathers."Is it okay if I...?"I tilted my head, meeting her grey eyes. The girl is asking permission again. I might have to keep her."Go ahead," I hooted softly.Mia's fingers touched my feathers. Her touch was impossibly gentle, like she was handling something precious and fragile. She stroked my plumage with the lightest pressure, her face alight with joy."Oh," she breathed. "You're so
[Pov: Amelia]I watched from my cage as servants came and went, their arms laden with boxes and bundles. The room that had once been so grand and imposing was slowly being stripped bare.Ruby slept through most of it, her tiny body curled against my side. I envied her ability to find peace in the middle of all this madness. Every time a servant passed too close to the cage, I tensed, my feathers ruffling with anxiety."Easy," I told myself. "They're just doing their jobs. They're not going to hurt you." I can’t also always trust the system to save meBut the cage felt smaller with each passing hour.Eventually, the last crate was carried out and the servants filed out, leaving behind an almost empty room and a loud silence.I was alone.Well, alone except for Ruby, who was still snoring softly against my side.I stared at the room, my mind racing with questions I couldn't answer. Where were we going? What would the vampire clans be like? I can’t remember any vampire stuff happening in
