CATALINA

I tightly shut my eyes when the sunlight hit my face as I stepped out of the lawn area of the women's penitentiary. My eyes were swollen from crying the whole night, and I couldn't believe I was sleeping on a cold floor in a small room with two unfamiliar women.

While the case is still ongoing, I need to stay here until my innocence is proven. I still couldn't move on about the passing of my father, but everyone accused me of murdering the person I cherished in my entire life.

They said he was poisoned by the food I delivered to him. But I don't remember delivering any food to my father's house. Fingerprints were discovered in the food pack, and it belonged to me, which is absurd.

My chest tightened at the fact that no one believed me. Not even my husband, who didn't visit me since I was captured out of my will.

A woman suddenly pushed me behind, causing me to walk forcibly to the lawn. They say we can play on this huge lawn for an hour under the sun. But I want to tuck myself under my sheet rather than enjoy the sunlight with these unfamiliar faces.

I'm scared.

They are criminals, and I'm afraid they will hurt me.

I sat on an empty bench, away from the others, to avoid being in trouble. As much as possible, I need to lie low and think of a way to get out of here. I hope James and Fiona are doing something to prove my innocence.

But… that smirk...

No! I just saw it differently. I'm thinking negatively, and it's not helping my mentality.

I caressed my stomach, feeling pain just by thinking that my child would suffer the most after this. I still have to tell James about my pregnancy. But he didn't even visit me or talk to me to clear these things out. Does he believe their accusations?

Damn it! I'm anxious as hell.

“Hey, pretty princess.”

I flinched and protectively covered my stomach with my hands when someone wrapped her arms around my shoulder. I swallowed the lump in my throat as soon as I saw a tattoo covering her left arm.

I didn't dare to raise my head and look at them. One... two... there are four pairs of legs in front of me and one sitting beside me. I heard the woman beside me scoff before pulling me closer to her. I smell trouble.

“Come here.” Before I could protest or look for a police officer for help, she dragged me to the corner, pinning me on the wall.

“What is it?” I bravely asked.

A finger touched my chin and lifted my head until I got eye to eye with a woman whom I believed was the leader. Her blonde, messy hair and tattoo on almost half of her face made it even scarier to look at.

I looked away as I held my breath.

“I heard you're a heiress.”

My hands tightened in my belly. “So what? Do you need money from me?”

“Give us a lawyer.”

I immediately look at her with furrowed brows.

“A Lawyer?”

“And help us get out of this hell.”

“I…” I can do it, but... “I couldn't even get a hold of my lawyer–”

I groan in pain when she grasps my hair all of a sudden.

“Complaining?”

“I-Is this even allowed here?!” I cursed under my breath.

“What do you think, princess?”

“Let go of me, please,” I begged.

I don't want this to go further, and I'm afraid she will hurt my baby, too.

“Don't order me around. I'm the boss here.” They all laugh as if there's something funny in her words. “So if I tell you to get us a trusted lawyer that can twist the evidence, you should obey and give me that goddamn lawyer–”

She groaned and immediately let go of my hair when something hit her arm. It’s a cigarette with a lit and smoke. Cigarettes? Is that allowed here?

“No littering here.”

We all look at the woman who appeared all of a sudden. She sighed in annoyance as she walked in our direction.

“Mind your own business!” The bully growled at her.

“She's my business.”

“I said–”

A shoe flew in our direction and hit the face of the bully. Yeah, bullseye. She fell to the ground with a bloody nose. The rest of the women panicked and were about to attack the woman who just saved me, but the leader stopped them.

“Get lost,” My savior firmly commanded.

She stared at the woman, and something might have scared her off as her eyes suddenly panicked and ran away from us, followed by her minions.

What was that? Is this woman also a leader here?

I held my breath as she got nearer to me, picked up her shoe, and put it on without a word.

As I stared at her, she was a black woman, and her pixie-cut hair looked good on her. I then noticed the dragon tattoo around her neck. Even though she has one, she doesn't seem scary at all.

“T-Thank you.”

She stood up and picked up the cigarette on the ground. Is she going to put it back– okay, she did put it back in her mouth.

“I'm only carrying out your husband's orders.”

My ears perked up at her words, which lightened my face. “Husband? My husband?”

James… I know you really love me.

***

Two months passed, and yet, James and Fiona didn't show up. My lawyer did the same. I kept calling my family lawyer, but I couldn't get hold of him.

Why is no one here to help me out? Not even my husband.

My case is still in deep silence, which added to my frustration. I touched the little bump in my tummy, trying to calm myself.

“Catalina Gomez.”

I glanced at the police officer outside the cell.

“Yes?”

“You can come out now.”

My brows furrowed in confusion. “W-What?”

“Your case was dismissed.”

I-I… I’m free?

CATALINAThe baby in my arms moves as her tiny mouth twitches in sleep. I adjust her gently, just enough not to wake her. Her warmth anchors me, but my eyes drift again to the balcony, to where Dante and Karen were talking about work-related matters.“Why are you anxious?”“I don't know–” I paused and gazed at Abby, whose brow raised. “I'm not anxious.”“It’s obvious, ma'am.”“I was just looking at them.” I avoided her eyes and just looked at Lia on my lap who was sleeping peacefully.Abby didn't say anything after that. I know she's not convinced, and I'm glad she's not the type of person who will force you to speak up.She excused herself to get some water in the kitchen. I watched her walk away and I couldn't help but look at the balcony again.Suddenly, Dante leans against the railing while gesturing toward something on the tablet Karen is holding. They’ve been out there for nearly an hour and I can’t hear everything, but I know enough that it’s serious. I glance back at the liv

CATALINAThe scent of warm vanilla and melted chocolate wrapped around our home like a gentle embrace. It was Sunday afternoon, the kind of day when the sun dribbled lazily through the curtains and everything felt just a little slower and softer. In the kitchen, chaos and joy mingled like old friends.Cassie, Abby’s six-year-old daughter, was perched on a stool, elbows deep in cookie dough, wearing an apron three sizes too big. Her giggles erupted every time she squished chocolate chips between her fingers before popping them into her mouth.Abby stood close by, her sleeves rolled up, guiding Cassie with the kind of patience I get to see from her when it comes to my and Chen’s stubbornness. She was gentle, almost maternal in a way that tugged at something deep in me. Watching them together made me see Abby not just as someone who protects me, but as a mother trying to savor stolen moments.Chen zoomed around in a blur of excitement, a cookie bandit on a mission. He’d sneak spoonfuls

CATALINAWe were seated near the window, the sunlight poured across the table like a spotlight neither of us asked for. The restaurant was quiet for lunchtime, low jazz humming through the speakers, the kind of place where conversations were meant to be murmured, not shouted. I appreciated the atmosphere. It gave my silence room to breathe.Dante ordered without asking. He always did that, which was somehow both thoughtful and irritating. Grilled salmon, risotto, and lemon water with mint. He knew my preferences as well as he knew his quarterly projections. But something about today made it feel like he was performing muscle memory rather than genuine care.I pushed the risotto with my fork, watching the steam rise but barely tasting it. My mind kept circling back to the glances, the hesitation, the weird shift in the air back in his office. He noticed. Of course he did.“You’re quiet,” he finally said, eyes scanning mine. “Too quiet.”I tilted my head. “Am I?”He gave a soft smile, t

CATALINAI pushed the door open, expecting to see Karen perched behind Dante’s desk. She was someone’s assistant. I don't remember who’s under her. All I remember was that Karen was efficient, poised, and slightly terrifying to anyone who couldn’t hold eye contact for more than two seconds. When she looked up, her eyes widened ever so slightly, like someone caught mid-thought or mid-sentence.“Catalina,” she said, rising quickly. Her voice was steady, but her posture betrayed the startle.I smiled. “Hi, Karen. Sorry, didn’t mean to jump-scare you.”She blinked, then smiled tightly. “I just didn’t realize you were here.”I walked in, setting my drink on Dante’s desk like I owned it because, in a way, I did. Or at least shared pieces of this world with him. I noticed a stack of papers slightly askew from earlier, a pen uncapped, and the faint scent of Karen’s perfume lingering in the air, a little sweeter than usual.“No worries. I figured I’d wait here again. Dante should be back so

CATALINAI stepped into the sleek, glass-paneled lobby of my husband's company, the familiar hum of quiet productivity washing over me. The receptionist greeted me with a polite smile. I returned the smile and asked if Dante was in.“Mr. Marcellos just stepped out for a meeting, ma'am. You're welcome to wait in his office."Of course, he wasn’t here. That man and his calendar, a whirlwind of boardrooms, briefings, and business lunches. I thanked her and headed toward the elevator, heels clicking softly against the marble floor. His office was exactly as I remembered: minimalist, but elegant. Clean lines, glass desk, curated art pieces that suggested taste without showiness. I sank into the leather chair opposite his, letting my fingers drift across the armrest as I looked at the city skyline.I loved the way sunlight poured into this place. Even in his absence, it felt like him. I pulled out my book, but the pages blurred as my thoughts wandered. I imagined him walking in, surprised t

CATALINAMy heels clicked across the marble lobby of my building, the sound sharp and grounding. Employees greeted me with polite surprise, clearly not expecting me after I had taken a leave for six months. Seeing my husband looking so tired from taking care of the two companies, I decided to handle everything from now on. I’d left Daneliya and Chen at home curled up with Abby, who was probably letting him climb her like a jungle gym while keeping an eye out for roaming dinosaurs and snack emergencies. That kid… he’d roared himself to sleep last night, still wearing his dino onesie, tail dragging behind him like a flag of victory. She’s the only one I can trust right now. Dante still doesn't know that I’m coming back to work, so I will give him a surprise lunch later at his company.I met with my executive assistant, reviewed the quarterly numbers, and signed two critical contracts with a sense of calm I hadn’t expected. The time away had sharpened my perspective. I didn’t need to mi
