Chapter 7

Midnight Static

Adrian POV

I remain motionless, listening as the last squeal of my tire disappears into a suffocating silence of the deserted road. The air inside the car suddenly felt thin, tasting faintly of iron and the cold river fog that pressed against the glass.

My breath caught, fogging the windshield in a jagged half moon as my trembling fingers inched upward, gripping the rearview mirror and tilting it down just enough to catch the dark, wet stretch of road behind me.

Just the empty street curving away beneath the pale yellow glare of the overhead sodium lights, flanked by towering brick facades and the dripping shadows of the park.

My chest rose and fell rapidly, each breath strained by the surge of adrenaline. I exhaled a shaky breath, a pathetic attempt to steady the static roaring in my ears.

A prank. It has to be so a twisted prank “i said softly”

A random spam number or a cruel neighbor playing off the mist and the late hour.

I pulled the mirror back into place, put the car back in drive, and forced my foot onto the gas, though every muscle in my body screamed at me to turn the wheel and run.

My mind raced in frenzled movement, a suffocating spiral of fear.

My phone ringing

I looked at it and it was my wife Vivian calling i picked up the phone

Hi babe guess what am at the airport, please come pick me

Vivian was flying in tonight. And I didn't know about it.

I had convinced myself or tried to that leaving her locked inside the house while I pretended to head to the late night office emergency was the safest play, thank God she left.

For three terrifying seconds, I stared at the pulsing green button, my thumb hovering over it like it was coated in venom.

By the time I pulled my sedan into the vast, dimly lit arrivals lane of the airport terminal, my shirt was soaked through with cold sweat.

The terminal was mostly dead at this hour, a sprawling expanse of polished vinyl flooring and echoing footsteps where weary travelers dragged heavy bags toward waiting cabs.

but I didn't get out right away. I sat there in the shadows, my eyes darting desperately across every face passing beneath the sliding glass doors, looking for a camera lens, a familiar coat, a watcher in the crowd.

Then I saw her.

My wife Vivian stepped through the automatic doors, pulling her dark roller suitcase behind her.

She looked tired, her shoulders collapsed beneath a heavy wool coat, stray strands of dark hair clinging to her damp cheeks.

But the moment she spotted my car waiting  by the car park her face softened with an expression of profound, aching relief. She quickened her pace, waving slightly, and my chest tightened with a crushing weight of guilt overwhelming love.

She had no idea. She had spent the last six hours in the stifling quiet of a metal tube thousands of feet in the air, completely oblivious to the nightmare waiting for her at home.

I pushed the door open, forcing a tight, reassuring smile onto my face as I stepped out into the freezing night air to meet her.

"Adrian," she breathed out the moment she reached me,

letting go of her travelling bags handle and stepping straight into my arms.

She felt so real, so fragile against me. I wrapped my arms around her tightly, burying my face in her hair, inhaling the familiar scent of lavender and travel worn wool.

But even as I held her, my eyes were scanning the upper level of the parking structure across the way, tracking the slow sweep of a security camera, wondering if someone up there was watching the lens zoom in on us right now.

"You are back ," she whispered, pulling back just an inch to look up at me, her dark eyes searching my face with a gentle, instinctive gentleness that always managed to disarm me.

"I was so worried you wouldn't make it with the mist. You said work was a crisis tonight... are you okay, honey? You’re freezing."

But you said the travelling is a three day journey how come you are back so quickly “i asked softly”

"I'm fine,"don't mind me. It was all a joke. sorry I lied, my voice sounding hollow and strained even to my own ears. I reached down and grabbed her travelling boxes, hoisting it into the trunk with jerky, trying too hard. Just... a long night at the office. Glad you're back."

She slid into the passenger seat, and I hurried around to the driver's side, locking all four doors the second I climbed in. The heater kicked on, blowing mild air against our lower legs, but the chill in my bones refused to leave. I pulled away from the curb, merging into the sparse highway traffic that crawled back toward the city limits.

For the first few miles, the car was quiet save for the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers.

I kept my eyes rigidly fixed on the road ahead, my hands locked at the ten-and-two position on the wheel, white knuckled and rigid. Every set of headlights in my rearview mirror felt like a threat.

every shadow cast by an overpass felt like a staged ambush.

Vivian moved beside me, breaking the heavy silence. She turned her body slightly toward the center console, resting her elbow on the armrest as she studied my profile in the dim dashboard light.

"Adrian,"she started her voice so soft tingled with mounting concern

"I'm just driving, Viv. Just trying to get us home safely in this mist.

"No," she insisted, her tone shifting from gentle concern to something sharper, more  observant.

She had known me too long; she could read the micro tremors in my jaw, the frantic dart of my eyes.

"You’ve barely said anything since I got into the car. You’re shaking. And your hands... you're grasping that wheel like we're about to crash. Babe, what is it? What's going on?"

I kept my eyes on the tarmac, swallowed by the dark. "Nothing. Just tired."

"Don't say that " she said, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a weight that forced me to briefly glance her way. She was staring at me steadily, her eyes wide with a sudden, dawning fear that mirrored my own.

"Don't shut me out. When I called you from luggage collection you sounded like you'd seen a ghost. And now... you're acting like we're being hunted. Why are you not relaxed? What happened while I was away?"

I opened my mouth to brush it off, to feed her another practiced lie about how work has been stressful and looming deadlines, but the words died in my throat.

Because right then, as we took the exit ramp toward our neighborhood, my phone sitting face up in the dashboard cradle lit up the dark cabin with a sharp, silent flash.

I didn't touch it. I didn't even have to look down to know what it was.

Vivian’s gaze darted from flicked from my face down to the screen, then back again, and  her breath catching was noticeable in her throat as the screen glowed with a fresh notification pop on the screen coming from a number I didn't recognize.
