Chapter 17.

HOME SWEET HOME.

Clary's POV.

“What's going on?” I stopped walking, and asked as I noticed some people gathering around. “What are they trying to do?”

“Well, what do you think?” Reggie asked, exhaling sharply as he glanced at them too. “The time for the ritual is almost near. So, they've started to prepare. You should also go in and prepare, but make it quick. We don't have much time on our hands.”

By 'make it quick', he meant not to spend so much time with my family. It's been five years since I last saw any of them, and he knew quite well what could happen if I go in there. They would obviously want me to spend some time with them which I would love to.

I mean, it would be difficult to say no to such request. But at the same time, I knew that I would have to refuse such offer. Perhaps, after Eric must have been stopped, then we can all sit and have a good family time. But now? It just doesn't seem like that would be possible.

“Clary? Clary?” Reggie called, nudging me

Chapter 24.AN OFFER.Clary's POV.“You know, it doesn't have to be this way, Clary.” Ryker said, as he brought me to the cell. “It doesn't make any sense that we're doing this right now. If only you'll just—” “I already told you that I have no idea where he is.” I said, the words clenched angrily around my teeth. “Believe it or not.” I had no idea what else they expected me to do or better still say. I'd told them over a million and one times that I had no idea where Reggie suddenly went to. Would they rather have me lie to them? Even if I choose to do that, I'll only end up getting punished for it. So, why can't they choose to believe me? If anything, they searched the house themselves, but weren't able to find him. How's that my fault?“Why are you protecting him?” he asked, in a curious tone. “I don't see any reason why you should. If you ask me, I'll be honest with you. You shouldn't have returned here.” “Well, guess what.” I said, looking him straight in the eyes. “I didn't

Chapter 23.A BATTLE OF WORDS.Clary's POV.“So, the rumors are true.” Eric said, with a hand behind his back and the other in front of him as if holding something while he glanced at the throne before him. “I guess news travels fast after all.” “What news?” I asked, forcefully taking back my arms from the grip of the men who held me. “I don't understand what you're saying.” “Of course, you do.” he said, turning back to face front as a cynical smile twisted his lips. “News does travel fast. Mind you, not just any kind of news.” He pointed a finger through the half empty wine glass in his grip as he walked towards a chair tucked in at the head of the rectory table. “The news of your return does travel fast.” he added, pulling out the chair and settling on it.“I only came here to see my parents.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “Besides, my ban has been lifted already.” “Yes. You don't need to remind me of that.” he said, drinking from the wineglass. “However, you said you ca

Chapter 22.A LESSON LEARNED.Clary's POV.“We know you're in there, Clary. So come out now.” — the firm voice came from the man hitting the door. “We don't want to, but if you refuse to come out now, we'll break down this door and come in.” Sitting on the tiled floor with both arms wrapped around my knees, I exhaled sharply as I hid behind the couch. It was all so sudden, and I really couldn't process a thing in my head. But then, Reggie wanted me to hide myself somehow. I couldn't have possibly gone into his bedroom or restroom. Besides, from the way he sounded, I knew that I had to act fast. So, I saw the couch as the best place to hide myself. However, as I sat there, I felt my entire body vibrating to the thump of my heart. I knew it. I could tell that something like this would happen. From the way they looked at me earlier, I knew that they would do something.Eric must have told them to report to him the very moment they set their eyes on me. And of course, I wasn't surprised

Chapter 21.A ONE-TIME HELP.Clary's POV.“You know, if you're really going to take on Eric, then you will have to do a lot better than that.” Reggie said, his voice came from behind. “You still seem a little weak.” Exhaling sharply, I got on my feet and turned to face him. Perhaps, if he hadn't uttered that spell that suddenly made him invisible then, I might have had a chance at pouncing on him.Nonetheless, he was right: I was still weak. But that wasn't my fault. I've been away from the pack for the past five years. And for that reason, I haven't been able to develop myself enough. The pack should have been the best place to do that.“Fortunately, this isn't some kind of training.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “Besides, I was just this close to hitting you. However, you chose to cheat when you did that spell.” “Cheat? Oh, come on.” he said, crinkling his face at the words. “I didn't cheat. I did what I had to do. But then, it seems like you keep forgetting that I have a

Chapter 20.AN EXPENSIVE JOKE.“Won't you just tell me already, huh?” I asked, following behind as Reggie walked back to the window. Yes. You guessed right. Since the very moment he mentioned that there was a rumor about such child, I'd been trying to get the words out of his mouth. But he just wouldn't say a thing. Instead, he's been taking me all around the room. Just name it, the kitchen, the door, sitting room. Practically anywhere you can think of. But certainly not his bedroom and restroom. However, he's just been making me feel like a girl desperate to get her lover back. It just didn't make any sense. I mean, if there truly was a rumor, then why hide it from me?Besides, it's a rumor. And we all know that more often than not, rumors end up being false news. But maybe, not this one. In the meantime, he paused in his tracks and turned back to face me.“Why exactly do you want to know?” he asked, in a curious tone. “If you haven't heard or seen something, then you wouldn't be

Clary!” I flinched, returning to the moment as I felt a hand on my shoulder.“Are you alright?” my mom asked, sitting right next to me on the couch. “You haven't said a word to anyone since you read the scroll. Is there something wrong? What are you not telling us?” “It is nothing mom.” I said, shaking my head as I tried to pull myself together. “I am fine. You were saying something; what were you saying?” “I asked if you would like a cup of coffee.” she said, holding one in her hand. “You said you had to leave for something important, right? So, I thought about making a cup of coffee for you. Would you like that?” “Uh, I don't think that'll be necessary.” I said, shaking my head with a smile. “It is late already, you should get some rest.” “Alright, but what about you?” she asked, as I righted myself from the couch. “Are you going to return home tonight? Do I need to leave the door open for you just in case you return?” “I also
