LOGIN“Our mate is really something else," Griffin said fawning as she watched a live video footage of our mate intentionally bumping into a vase with exaggerated movements.
There was no audio from the footage but I could imagine the ear splitting sound that could come from that vase shattering.
My heart dropped, reacting as though she was on the edge of a cliff as she maneuvered through the shards then she carefully swept them together not throwing them away but keeping them aside.
Did she do that out of frustration?
I had already explained why we couldn't be together, couldn't she just quietly live in the annex where all her needs were catered to?
" You know our mate is anything but that kind of woman,"
At that moment my aide Jace walked in, I shut my laptop with more first than necessary straightening out my features as I said, “Jace, knock next time, would you?”
" My deepest apologies Alpha, but your council members have been waiting for you…"
My eyes traveled up to the wall clock and then my jaw to the ground with a smack.
The meeting was supposed to start at 10:30 am and it was already 12 minutes after 11am.
How had I missed it?
“We were watching our mate," Griffin said unhelpfully as if that was an excuse I could give to the council?
I didn't wait for Griffin's reply before I pushed myself off the table and started heading out to my throne room already seated as Jace had said with my council members, exchanging murmurs that floated in the air and ended the second I stepped in.
“Sorry I made you all wait this long. I was held up by something," I said as an explanation before taking the seat on my throne.
“Let us begin…”
As we delved into a long discussion about the taxes for the pack my mind would regularly slip over to her, what was her goal of breaking that vase? Should I send someone there to help her sweep up broken pieces to make sure that she doesn't step on any of them?
This is ridiculous, I should focus she's fine, I'm fine everyone's fin-
" I hope I'm not too late!” A voice that was as familiar as it was irritating announced loudly throwing open the double doors of my throne room. A vein appeared in my head, a normal reaction from his presence.
" Cassius you're not late for anything because you're not invited to this meeting,”
He placed a dramatic palm against his chest as if I just drove a dagger into it.
" Isn't that a little too cruel to say to your dear brother?"
I placed my fingers against my temple trying to massage the incoming headache.
“Just take a seat and don't interfere," I told him.
He settled down on one of the empty chairs, taking this time with it as if he had all day then he crossed his legs and looked at me.
“Oh brother I wouldn't ever dream of interfering, but as your next of kin something has been brought to my attention by the people…"
“If my pack needs something that is what my council is here for," I told him straight forwardly.
"Yes yes of course and I would never take that away from them they do such an excellent job, but I don't know there's just something about me that makes the people capable of telling me their truest thoughts…I wish I didn't give off such I reliable aura,”
The bite to his words was not lost on me, indirectly he was saying that I wasn't reliable enough for the people to lay down their deepest worries. Griffin told me to discipline him, but I had learned to choose my battles with my brother. If I responded to every slighting comment we would be bickering like children everyday and I refuse to stoop down to his level.
And Cassius wasn't stupid either, he knew how to thread the lines very carefully, enough that if I immediately pulled out a punishment I would be seen as an insecure leader with an ego that was as fragile as a dried up stick in autumn.
“And what was it that the people felt so inclined to tell you?" I said just deciding to humor him.
“I overheard that you would be talking about taxes today,"
I found myself smiling but it didn't reach up to my eyes, he was barely even hiding it anymore that he had spies in my council because that's the only way he knew what we would be discussing.
“And?" I said I wanted this to be over and done with.
He cleared his throat.
" For the people that own slaves they have noticed that they are forced to pay an exorbitant amount of taxes, and regularly the rate keep going up without any reason,”
" If they can afford to buy slaves then they can also afford to pay those taxes, “ I said bluntly.
In truth this was one of my efforts to discourage slavery at least in my own pack, and it had worked to some extent. Many people went back to their books and realized that owning a slave in the long-term while added to the taxes would be more disadvantageous and paying them a salary would be far better.
Of course many were stubborn about it.
“Anything else Cassius?"
Griffin thoroughly enjoyed the way he struggled to keep that smirk plastered on his face, no matter how petty he decided to be. I was still the one on this throne and he was no more than an ant.
I thought he was about to leave after I more or less dismissed what he had come to announce with such grandiose when he had a smile on his face that made me sick to my stomach.
" While we are on the topic of Slaves there is something that I have been dying to bring to your attention for a long time….” He paused as if he needed a moment to check if all eyes were on him. Once his curiosity was satisfied his attention returned to me and he completed his words, " it's about those slaves that you bought from Clawsbane recently, particularly the one with red hair.”
I wasn't able to sleep early that night, when I woke up the next morning light pouring into the bedroom I couldn't push away in the feeling of unease-the fact that it all felt so temporary. But I already had a plan in motion... If everything goes right.... Then... I jumped out of bed deciding that I was not going to spend the rest of the day just thinking about that and have to begin preparing breakfast for me and Ian. First I began with some of the cleaning of the annex, the headmaid occasionally dropped in from time to time to see if I was actually maintaining the place and since I could not explain my true relationship with Ian yet I had to keep this up, also it kept me occupied when my mind would have been wandering around on its own to memories that I needed to leave be for now.I was taking the broom to the living room when there was pounding on the door and I was confused it was repeated another loud too.Setting the broom aside I went over to the door to inspect what was go
It seems like I might have underestimated Scarlet a bit, I keep forgetting that I should not expect the same humbleness that one would get from other slaves from her. I gave my watch another glance. "They'll be here soon," I see the first word of exchange between the two of us after 5 minutes of stretched silence. She was appearing then disappearing into other rooms of the annex, I said there's just that she was entering the living area. "Who is the person?" She asked and you could tell how the guardedness slipped right into her voice like a cloth it was wearing over. "Just someone to help with our plans," Her lip curved downward. "What? Are you displeased that you are not my only partner? Don't worry the person that is coming is not barely as attractive as you are,"She gave me a cutting look. "I'm just worried... The more people that get involved in this more likely it could leak out to your brother aren't you worried about that?"I shook my head. "No, he is someone that ha
The day ended with me at the annex, and something about that made me want to punch a hole through the wall. I was charming, I was caring. Ian reciprocated to it all. You could tell that he had to keep his wolf on a very tight leash. After all our first-and only-night together was something that I thought would have been repeated by now. Yet even on the moments when it felt like he was finally about to quit and give in he was so frustratingly resilient. "Couldn't he cave just once? ""Who isn't caving?"It was like cold water had been splashed over my back and and began to rapidly trickle down I turned around gasping and swinging my fist in reflexive protection a grip stronger than I had expected held my hand in place."Didn't you know it was me?" He said the group softening as he robbed around my wrist a yanked my hand away from his."I already knew who it was from your annoying voice," I told him. He chuckled, "well at least my voice is memorable to you. That's a good thing righ
Ian returned, a maid trailing behind him with a trail of food. She gave me a sour but brief look as if demanding to know what gave me the audacity to casually rest myself on the sette.Noticing her displeasure I spread myself more comfortably crossing my legs and the gesturing for the food she was holding, by the time she reached me her face was filled with all the blood in her body red with rage that she couldn't do anything with." Thank you," I greeted her with a syrupy voice, and Her face got more red And it even got worse when I added, you can leave now," Her lips twitched.Slaves were regarded lower than the dirt they walked under, And Since mates were usually amongst the lowest ranks of wolves Slaves were the only people they could stomp on.Too bad she wasn't going to get that opportunity now.But she had not understood yet she looked towards Ian."Grand alpha is there anything else you need me to do?" Intentionally ignoring what I had told her earlier. Without taking his eye
The way Ian yelled, I couldn't believe it. Even I myself was shaking. His full Alpha aura came out, and I wondered if I had gone too far. I decided that maybe I had, because as I gradually stood up, I saw him looking at the chef with murderous intent. To make sure that no blood was shed, I shoved past the chef and rushed over to Ian. "Good morning, Grand Alpha."Normally I would just call him by his name, but I was referring to him this way because we were amongst other people and they didn't need to know how close we were just yet. For them, they should just see me as a pitiful slave. For anyone that was also vying for the position, they shouldn't see me as a threat, or else they might choose to get rid of me before I even have the chance to claim what is meant to be mine. His hand was reaching up to touch my cheek, and I signaled for him not to with a small shake of my head. Those fingers curled into a tight fist, and he looked at the chef again.Still looking at me, he told the che
"You're supposed to be his older brother!"My father's voice roared back into my mind as it always did, constantly clawing its way into my thoughts to torment me. I could still see myself as a young boy standing before him as he fussed over Cassius after we had a fight and both of us had injuries from it."You're supposed to be more mature than this!" he would roar at me, and then proceed to beat me up to prove his point—for some reason that rationalized what he was doing. He never addressed what had caused the altercation between me and Cassius because, at the end of the day, his dear golden boy could do no wrong. I, for expressing any kind of discomfort or defending myself, was the one out of line.It was the same with our mother too, though at least she pretended as if she didn't have a favorite."You know how Cassius is, Ian. You have to be more understanding of him because he is your brother, and family helps family and forgives too."But this only worked towards Cassius. Even wh
