Ava POV

Mornings had become my safest ritual.

I woke Leo, helped him brush his teeth and as usual we argued over socks. Then I braided my hair while he sat on the bed swinging his legs and telling me half-formed stories about dreams that never made sense but always made me smile.

By the time I was dressed for work and Leo was ready for his nanny, I felt put together again, like the cracks inside me had been sealed, at least for the day.

We stepped out of the apartment together,

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    Vanished

Ava’s POVBy the time I got to the nanny’s house, the sky had already turned dark. The streetlights glowed faintly along the quiet road and the night air carried a soft chill that brushed against my skinI knocked softly. The nanny opened it almost immediately, her face showing a mix of relief and concern. “Good evening, ma’am.”“Good evening,” I replied quickly, already looking past her. “Leo?”She sighed and stepped aside to let me in. “He has been crying for a while now.”My chest tightened painfully. I walked inside and saw him sitting on the couch, his small shoulders trembling as quiet sobs escaped his lips.“Mummy!”The moment he saw me, he jumped down and ran straight into my arms. I knelt down immediately and wrapped him in a tight embrace.“I’m here, baby… I’m here,” I whispered softly, stroking his hair. His little fingers clutched my blouse tightly as if he was afraid I would disappear again.“You came late,” he said between sniffles.“I’m sorry,” I murmured, kissing the

Night didn’t just fall gently; It slammed into the city, swallowing the last traces of daylight and leaving the office covered in artificial brightness that only made everything feel colder. The glass walls reflected my image back to me, my rumpled blouse and tired eyes.I was still searching, again.I retraced my steps like a ritual, from desk to drawer to cabinet to shelf to table and even the trash bin that had already been emptied twice. My fingers shook as I opened the last drawer again but it was empty.A sharp breath tore out of my chest, my vision blurred for a second, and I had to grip the desk to steady myself.“No… no, no,” I whispered.Behind me, I heard Aria sigh softly, she had stopped panicking hours ago, and now she is worried about me.“Ma’am,” she said gently, dropping the formal tone. “We’ve checked everywhere.”I spun to face her. “Then we haven’t checked properly.”Her lips parted, then closed again. She chose her words carefully. “It’s almost night, you have be

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    My credibility on the line

I stared at the screen for a second too long before picking up the call, my hands were shivering. “Good day Miss Ava,” “Good day Mr. Cole,” I tried the best I could not to sound nervous. “I hope you are not having any challenges over there.” “No sir” I lied but it's not actually a lie because I have been working smoothly without having any challenge until this morning. “Good to hear. We trust in your capabilities, which is why we have entrusted you with this mission..” That was something I would have blushed about but I could not. My heart keeps racing. “This is just a soft reminder that this project is about to be over. As you know the final meeting is in two days. So prepare all the valid documents.” “Ok sir.” “Good. As we both know, WSM groups are really strict so I urge you to put up your best behavior.” “I will sir.” “I trust you, Miss Ava. Bye for now.” he hung up. Trust. He kept on saying that word, I can't afford to lose that trust. I have worked with t

Then I braided my hair while he sat on the bed swinging his legs and telling me half-formed stories about dreams that never made sense but always made me smile. By the time I was dressed for work and Leo was ready for his nanny, I felt put together again, like the cracks inside me had been sealed, at least for the day. We stepped out of the apartment together, the sunlight spilling into the hallway then someone familiar to my past blocked my path. Jasmine. For a second, I wondered if my past had finally decided to hunt me down in physical form. “Well, well, well.” she said, her eyes dragging over me slowly. “Look who it is. Ava.” I stopped and tightened my grip on Leo’s hand. He leaned closer to me instinctively, his small fingers curled into my palm. “When did you return?” she continued without waiting for an answer. “Wow… you have really changed

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    I FAILED HER QUIETLY

Jasmine? It's been five good years since I threw her out of my house and asked her never to return and since then I haven't set my eyes on her. What is she doing here? “Good morning, Ethan.” “I don't need that, what the hell are you doing in my house?” “Don't worry, I will just go.” “Did you miss the address of the actual place you were heading to?” She didn't reply. Immediately she turned and left shamelessly, she has always been weird. What does she really want? I know for a fact that she is definitely up to something, but whatever it is, it is never going to work. She is not just a slut, she is also a chronic thief. Her parents really thought they had brought up a child in a good manner but unknown to them that she is just another wasted sperm. I went inside the bedroom, Sienna was still sleeping and snoring, disturbing the peace of the house. I went straight to the bathroom, freshened up and prepared for work. I left for work without any ranting because sh

  • THE SON BETWEEN US    I signed my family away

Ethan POV She walked past me like I was invisible, not even a flicker of recognition. Her eyes stayed forward and focused only on my little boy at her side and her hand was also locked around him, so firm and protective, like she was afraid the world might snatch him away if she loosened her grip. I swallowed hard. “Ava,” I called. But there was no response. My chest tightened, I tried again and louder this time. “Ava.” She didn’t even slow down or turn. It was like my voice couldn’t reach her anymore. The boy laughed at something she said as his head tipped back slightly, that sound hit me harder than any slap ever could, I recognized it, the tone and the careless joy. It sounded so much like me when I was younger before I learned how to bury everything that mattered. My son doesn’t even know who I am, that thought made my hands shake. I took a step toward them, then stopped. What would I even say? I’m sorry felt too small, It sounded like a lie even to myself.
