Morning After The Storm

Sunlight stabbed through the heavy curtains like a warning. Elara woke with her heart already racing, the mate bond humming in her chest like a live wire that refused to shut off. Married… Mated… Trapped. The words looped in her head as she sat up in the spare room bed, sheets tangled around her legs.

She dressed fast in simple jeans and a soft sweater that hid the way her hands still trembled, then stepped into the main suite. Kai stood by the breakfast table in a crisp black button-down, sleeves rolled up, looking every inch the future alpha… and every inch pissed off. Dark circles under his eyes said he hadn’t slept much either.

“Coffee’s ready,” he said without looking up, sliding a mug her way. Black… Exactly how she used to drink it years ago. The small detail stung worse than it should.

Elara took it, letting the heat burn her palms. “Of course it is… Wouldn’t want the forced bride to complain.”

Kai finally met her eyes over his own cup. His gaze lingered a second too long. “You’ve changed. University looked good on you.”

The words were neutral, almost careful, but the mate bond didn’t care. It flared hot in her chest, sending warmth curling through her veins. Her wolf wanted to preen. Elara shoved the feeling down hard.

“I had to change,” she said coldly. “The pack didn’t leave me much choice after what Serena and Lila did… After what you believed.”

A sharp knock cut off whatever he might have said. A beta enforcer poked his head in. “Alpha Garrick wants you both early. Tension’s building in the hall… And whispers about the bond are getting loud.”

Kai set his mug down hard. “Let’s go.”

The walk to the grand hall was silent and charged. Kai stayed close… too close. Every accidental brush of his arm against hers sent sparks racing over her skin. The bond loved it. She hated how much she noticed. How much her body leaned toward him before her mind yanked it back.

Pack members they passed stared openly. Some whispered behind hands while others glared at her like she was the plague who came back to finish the job. The old rumors were already waking up.

Inside the grand hall, long tables still held remnants of the interrupted wedding. Alpha Garrick sat at the head like a king, flanked by elders. Lila and Serena were already there. Lila smiled like the perfect victim. Serena’s glare could cut glass. Lila’s rogue mate, the same scarred bastard from years ago shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“Son. Daughter-in-law,” Garrick boomed, voice full of authority. “Sit…”

Elara took the chair beside Kai, chin high even as the bond pulled her to lean into his side. Serena’s eyes burned into her across the table.

Garrick wasted no time. “The bond is recognized. The marriage stands but old rumors are stirring again. We need unity, not division, especially with challengers testing our borders.”

Serena jumped in, voice sweet as poisoned honey. “Unity? How can we have unity when she’s back? Everyone remembers how she tormented Lila and me. The lies... The rumors she spread. Kai knows, he saw the evidence before he left for training.”

Elara’s hands clenched under the table until her nails bit skin. The bond flared in response, feeding her Kai’s tension like it was her own. He stiffened beside her but said nothing.

Lila dabbed at her eyes dramatically. “She made our lives hell. Turned friends against us. I still have nightmares.”

The rogue mate stayed quiet, eyes darting away every time Elara looked in his direction. Guilt? Fear? She couldn’t tell.

The meeting dragged through border reports and alliance talk, but the real war was under the surface. Every time Serena spoke, she twisted the knife. Every time Garrick looked at Elara, his gaze weighed her like she might break the pack. Kai stayed mostly silent, but she felt the bond humming between them, protective instincts clashing with his lingering doubt.

When it finally ended, Kai pulled her into a quiet side hallway away from prying eyes. The moment the door closed, he turned on her.

“That was rough in there,” he muttered, voice low. “You okay?”

She shrugged, keeping her walls up even as the bond tugged harder. “Survived worse. Remember? Or did Serena’s version erase that too?”

The bond pulled again, stronger this time. Kai stepped closer, eyes darkening. The air between them thickened, his hand lifted like he might touch her cheek, then dropped at the last second.

“I’m starting to see holes in the old stories,” he admitted, voice rough. “Things don’t line up the way I remembered but I’m not ready to burn everything down on a feeling... Not yet.”

Elara’s chest ached with the force of the bond and the sting of his words. “Of course not. Wouldn’t want to disappoint Serena. She’s been so loyal all these years.”

Before he could answer, Serena’s voice echoed from around the corner, sweet and demanding. “Kai? We need to talk about the eastern patrols.”

Elara stepped back, breaking the almost-touch. “I need air.”

She spent the afternoon wandering the pack grounds alone. The familiar forest paths should have felt comforting. Instead they felt like traps. The bond tugged at her constantly, pulling her thoughts back toward Kai no matter how far she walked. Every breeze carried hints of his scent, every shadow made her wonder if Serena or Lila was watching.

By dusk she was exhausted but no calmer. When she returned to the alpha suite, Kai was already there. His shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up, revealing tense forearms. He looked like he’d been pacing.

“Dinner’s here,” he said, gesturing to the table. “We should talk... Really talk.”

But the second Elara stepped inside and closed the door, his phone lit up with a new message. His entire face hardened as he read it.

“What?” she asked, stomach tightening.

Kai looked up, voice cold and dangerous. “Anonymous tip. Someone just sent the pack the old photos again… the same ones from back then with a new note saying my mate is the same girl who tried to ruin us all.”

He stared at her. Suspicion and the mate bond warred violently in his storm-gray eyes. The pull between them crackled like lightning ready to strike.

“Tell me you didn’t have anything to do with this leak, Elara.”

The accusation hit like a slap. The bond screamed in protest, flooding her with his conflicted heat while her own anger burned cold.

She stepped forward until they were only inches apart, looking him dead in the eyes.

“If you really think I’d humiliate myself like that just to trap you,” she whispered, voice shaking with fury, “then maybe you deserve everything Serena’s feeding you.”

The bond surged hotter than ever, demanding he close the distance. Demanding he choose.

Kai’s breathing roughened. His gaze dropped to her lips for one dangerous heartbeat.

Then his phone buzzed again, another message.

This time the preview glowed between them:

“Want the real proof? Eastern woods. Midnight… Come alone.”

Kai’s eyes met hers, dark and stormy.

“Are you going?” she asked, voice tight.

His answer came low and final.

“Yes.”

But the bond wasn’t letting either of them walk away that easily.
