KIVA POV.

I kept staring at my hands.

The golden light wasn't spilling from beneath my skin anymore, but I could still feel it under there, tucked away somewhere close to the bone. Waiting. Breathing along with me. Almost listening, like it was paying attention to every thought that crossed my mind.

Tamara stretched out lazily from her spot across the room, completely unbothered by what had just happened to both of us.

"So..." She glanced between me and the Priestess. "Now what?"

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    CHAOS HAS NO MASTER

"Some people inherit power. Others become it."TAMARAOld women who knew too much irritated me. This one irritated me more than most because she was almost always right, and there was nothing more aggravating than someone you could not argue with on the facts. I had spent years sharpening the ability to find the flaw in every argument, every position, every piece of advice offered by people who thought they understood more than they did. The Priestess had no such flaw. Which made her infuriating in a very specific and personal way.I wandered through the outer rooms of the cottage while Kiva remained inside with her, asking what I was certain were a significant number of questions. Typical. My sister had always wanted answers before she moved. I had always preferred moving first and figuring things out from whatever broke on impact. Neither approach was wrong. They were simply different languages for solving the same problems.I picked up a small crystal from one of the shelves. It hu

She glanced between me and the Priestess. "Now what?"The Priestess busied herself pouring tea into three small cups, not even looking up as she answered."Now... we teach your sister."Tamara pressed a hand dramatically to her chest, feigning offense."Favoritism."The Priestess didn't so much as glance her way."You've had eighteen years."Tamara muttered something under her breath that I couldn't quite make out and took the cup that was handed to her anyway. I wrapped both hands around mine too, though I had no real intention of drinking it. My mind was some

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    BLOOD AND BOND

"Some blood carries a legacy. Some blood remembers it."KIVAI couldn't take my eyes off the orb.It rested on the table between Tamara and me, no bigger than a melon, its surface a deep, glassy black that seemed to swallow the candlelight rather than reflect it. There was something about it that felt old in a way I couldn't explain, like it had been sitting there since before the cottage existed, watching kingdoms rise and crumble around it.The Priestess set the ceremonial blade down beside it, the metal catching what little light the candles gave off."You may be wondering why blood is required," she said.Neither of us answered. We just watched her, waiting. She smiled, like she already knew what we were thinking."Because power recognizes truth.""It cannot be deceived.""It cannot be inherited through lies.""It answers only to blood."Tamara didn't wait for more. She reached for the blade almost immediately."So... we just cut ourselves?"The Priestess's hand shot out and slapp

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    THE ORB

"Some destinies are not forged. They are remembered."KIVAI glanced at Tamara. She had been unusually quiet since we entered the clearing of the priestess place."You okay?""I don't like old people who know too much."I laughed softly. "That's oddly specific.""It'll make sense in a minute."The cottage door swung open before I could ask what she meant."I was beginning to think the two of you had gotten lost." The Priestess stood in the doorway, silver hair over her shoulders, with the unhurried air of someone who had been waiting and had never doubted the wait would end. Her gaze moved to me first, then shifted to Tamara.A slow smile spread across her lips. "It took you long enough."Tamara leaned against the porch railing. "I was busy not dying.""I see your sense of humor survived.""Barely.""And your manners?""They died years ago."The Priestess chuckled. "I noticed."I looked between them. "You know each other?"Tamara answered first. "Unfortunately.""I practically raised

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    CAUSING CHAOS IS MINE

“CAUSING HAVOC IS MY JOB.”KIVAWe had barely reached the damaged SUV before Knox straightened despite the obvious pain written across his face. "We need to return to the Northern Gates immediately." His eyes found me. "Luna, Alpha Damien—""I know." The words came out before he could finish. Every second that passed, Damien was out there somewhere. Alone. Lost to whatever darkness had swallowed him in that bedroom. The thought sat in my chest like a stone.Tamara opened the driver's side door, glanced at the wrecked interior, then at the mangled front of the vehicle. "Well. That's not going anywhere." She kicked one of the flattened tires. "What a shame."I almost smiled. She talked about a completely destroyed vehicle the way someone talked about a mildly inconvenient weather forecast.Knox reached for the communication device on his belt. Before he could press it, Tamara spoke. "You."He looked up. "You're going back."He frowned. "Excuse me?""The estate." She pointed back toward

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    IT WOULD BE A FUN RIDE

"Some reunions are quiet. Others arrive with blood, laughter, and promises of revenge."KIVAWe found Knox halfway down the slope where he had fallen. He was unconscious, his left arm soaked in blood from the gunshot. My heart lurched when I saw him. "Knox!" I dropped to my knees beside him and pressed two fingers against his neck. His pulse was weak but it was there. "But it's there," I whispered, and the relief that came with those three words was almost physical.Tamara crouched beside us and looked him over for barely a second. "He'll live."I looked at her. "You can tell that?""I can tell a lot of things."Before I could ask what she meant, she pressed two fingers against Knox's forehead. The crimson markings beneath the skin of her wrist flickered. The air shimmered. Leaves began circling slowly around her hand and Knox inhaled sharply, his body jerking once, the bleeding visibly slowing. I stared. "What—""I stabilized him." She stood. "He still needs a healer. But he won't di

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    "TAKE IT OFF"

"The bravest thing a broken person can do is say yes to something good."KIVA."Yes."The word came out broken by tears, cracked right down the middle, not elegant at all, not the way I had ever imagined saying something like that if I was ever lucky enough to be asked something like this."Yes, Fa

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    "DON'T GO"

“THE DREAMS WE CANNOT CONTROL ALREADY OWNS US”DAMIEN (HADES) POVI am in the dream again, and I always know I'm dreaming the moment it starts, but that never gives me control over it because it just means I'm aware enough to suffer through it properly. It begins in silence, not a peaceful silence

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    YES OR NO?

“ ALLOW YOURSELF TO SHINE WITHOUT BEING SEEN” KIVA POV.He looked at me for a moment like he was deciding how much to say."The Decaulion," he said.I went still. The name alone did that. Even to someone like me, someone who had spent most of her life looking down rather than up at the structures

  • THE VEILED BRIDE    SANDALWOOD. RAIN. HOME.

"The thing about being loved by the right person is that it doesn't feel like anything you were warned about. It feels like finally exhaling."KIVA POV.For a second I could only stare at him. Fabian stood near the library doors holding a bouquet of white lilies and dark red roses in one hand while
