Chapter Two: Stromhaven

The packhouse was awake even at midnight. I sensed it before I saw it. The low hum of dozens of wolves breathing under one roof, their bonds weaving through the building like something alive.

Power. Not loud. Not aggressive. Just constant.

The vehicle rolled through the iron gates, and Stromhaven came into view.

Four stories of dark stone, older than anything in my father’s territory. Ivy climbed the walls like it belonged there.

Narrow windows cut through the upper levels, built for defense long before comfort.

It didn’t feel like a home. It felt like something built to last. I stepped out before anyone could open the door for me. Cold air hit my skin, and I welcomed it. Somewhere inside was what I had come for: the sealed room, the artifact, the truth my mother had died trying to protect.

“Don’t wander.”

The voice was sharp, controlled. I turned.

The woman at the entrance stood perfectly still, like she had been there long before I arrived.

“Maren,”

she said. “I manage this house.” Her eyes moved over me once, quick and precise. assessment. conclusion. filed away.

“The Alpha will see you in the morning. You’ll follow instructions until then.”

“Understood.”

She watched me a moment longer than needed, as if searching for something that didn’t fit her expectations.

Then she turned. I followed. Inside, the air felt different. Not warmer, but older. Lived in.

Stone walls held years of voices, decisions, things that had happened and stayed. This wasn’t my father’s packhouse. This place had weight.

I noticed the tapestry right away. It was faded but intentional, showing a wolf mid-leap beneath a moon. Behind it, the wall shifted slightly. There was a second door, hidden and useful. I kept walking. My room was on the second floor.

Last door. east corridor. prepared. too prepared.

The bed was large. The furniture was solid, old but well cared for. Clothes in my size were already waiting in the wardrobe. He had done this before. I didn’t let myself dwell on it. Maren stood in the doorway.

“Meals at seven, noon, and seven. You’ll report to the east dining room. west wing is restricted. Lower level requires permission.” A pause. “

do not leave the grounds.”

“I won’t.”

Her eyes narrowed a little. “You’re calm.” “I’ve had practice.” Something in her expression changed. It was small, but real.

“Get rest,” she said. “You’ll need it.”

She closed the door. I waited and listened as silence settled. Then I moved. One minute. That was all I gave myself. One minute to feel where I was. Inside Stromhaven. Under his roof. In the place I had spent three years trying to reach.

Then I stood and went to the window, measuring the drop. Not to escape, but to know. Voices came through the wall, muted and controlled, but clear enough. 'The acquisition was unnecessary.' The voice was smooth and calculated.

“we have enough variables.” “She’s not a variable.”

Zayden!

My body stilled.

“She closed a debt,” he continued.

“That’s all.” “You paid double.”

Pause.

“The debt needed to end completely.”

Silence stretched. then...

“Your wolf has been unstable for months.”

Another pause. Longer.

“He’s watching you.” “You don’t need to monitor me.”

“I need to keep you alive.”

The words landed differently. He didn’t respond immediately.

When he did, his voice was lower.

“then find the source.”

a door opened. Closed.

Silence returned...I stepped back from the wall slowly.

His wolf was unstable. Worse than the rumors, and it was happening faster than expected. That was good. And dangerous. Sleep came without warning—shallow, light, controlled.

I woke before dawn. I was still, alert, and certain that someone had been outside my door. I wasn’t guessing. I knew.

My wolf sensed it. The trace of a presence lingered like a shadow that hadn’t fully left. They hadn’t tried to enter. They just stayed, waiting and watching.

I sat up slowly. Something white rested on the floor—a folded piece of paper, slipped under the door. I crossed the room, picked it up, and opened it.

Four words.

"You are not safe"

I read it once, then again. I folded it carefully and deliberately.

Someone knew something about me. about this place. about what was coming.

I hid the note, changed my clothes, and pulled myself back under control. If danger was here, I would find it before it found me.

I stepped into the corridor and walked toward it.
