ISABEL

The heavy timber gates of Rivercrest stood wide open, framing a winding southern road that vanished into the thick forest.

I tightened my grip on the worn leather strap over my shoulder. Everything I owned fit inside that single bag: two plain dresses, a faded shawl, a wooden comb missing half its teeth, and a small wolf carving my old nurse had secretly slipped into my hands on my tenth birthday.

"Every human deserves someone who believes in them," she had whispered before pressing it into my palm.

She was gone now, but that tiny piece of wood was all I had left of someone who had once looked at me with genuine kindness.

The courtyard overflowed with people. Pack members lined both sides of the stone path, speaking in hushed tones as I kept my chin up, my eyes fixed on the muddy gravel. After twenty years of being the pack's disappointment, pretending not to hear had become second nature to me.

Ahead of me waited Fireclaw. Warriors sat perfectly still atop their enormous black horses. Not one spoke. Their silence was disciplined.

Standing at the front was Asher Rowan, the future Alpha.

"Isabel."

Father's deep voice cut across the courtyard.

I turned toward the stone steps where Alpha Darius stood flanked by Mother and Vivian.

I lowered into a curtsy.

"Father."

"From this day forward, you carry Rivercrest's name," he said, his voice echoing across the courtyard. "Conduct yourself with dignity. Remember the blood in your veins, and do not bring shame upon this pack."

"I understand, Father."

That was all. No blessing. No embrace. Not even a simple wish for my safety. Disappointment tightened inside my chest, and I hated myself for expecting differently.

Beside him, Vivian folded her arms with a dry, bitter laugh.

"The Moon Goddess truly enjoys cruel jokes," she whispered as she walked toward me, her eyes traveling down my plain blue dress. "The future Alpha of Fireclaw... and he ends up with you. The moment he discovers you're a wolfless failure, he'll send you crawling back."

Mother stepped forward next, tears shimmering in her eyes for the crowd to see as she pulled me into a tight hug.  But her fingers pinched sharply into my skin.

"You had better pray every night," she whispered softly into my ear, her voice cold enough to freeze blood. "If your wolf doesn't awaken before Fireclaw discovers what you are, you'll regret it. No one will protect a wolfless disgrace."

She pulled back, gently wiping away a tear that didn't exist.  "My sweet girl, take care of yourself. You will always have a home here."

Home.  The word felt hollow. Rivercrest had never been a home. It was simply the place that taught me love was conditional.

Without looking back, I climbed into the waiting carriage. The heavy wooden door shut.

The iron wheels began to turn, and my past slowly disappeared behind me.

The carriage rolled steadily down the winding forest road, its wheels crunching over wet gravel. I stared blankly at the seat opposite me, waiting for my chest to ache.

Instead, there was only a heavy emptiness. Twenty years inside those stone walls, and I was leaving behind nothing that would miss me. I had no friends.

Outside, the Fireclaw escort rode in tight, flawless formation. They didn't chat or laugh, speaking only when necessary.

Hours passed as daylight faded, stretching long shadows over the narrow road. The forest went dead quiet—not even the birds made a sound. Then, the carriage ground to a halt.

"Form a perimeter!" a warrior shouted outside. "Protect the carriage!"

A terrifying howl broke the silence, answered by several others, and everything turned to chaos. A massive gray wolf burst from the brush toward one of the riders. Before it could strike, a broadsword flashed, its steel bursting into bright flames that lit up the trees.

More attackers charged, but Fireclaw held the line effortlessly. One rider shifted mid-stride, his black wolf slamming into the enemy while heat radiated from its fur. Another swung a flaming blade, raising a wall of fire that cut off the attackers' advance. The rumors were true. They really did command fire.

"Archers!" a voice shouted from the ridge.

Arrows tore through the trees. The attackers moved in organized groups, dressed in dark leather. This wasn't a rogue attack. It was an ambush.

The carriage lurched as something slammed against its frame. I gasped, my hand flying to the carriage handle on instinct, but I stopped myself. I couldn't fight. I couldn't shift. I didn't even have a wolf. Stepping outside would only make me a burden. Slowly, I pulled my hand back into my lap, feeling helpless.

Through the curtain, I saw a Fireclaw warrior thrown into the mud. Before the enemy could finish him, another rider cut in between them while two others dragged their injured comrade to safety. No hesitation. No one was left behind.

I swallowed hard. Rivercrest would've left me behind without a second thought.

"Fall back!" a voice barked.

Just like that, the attackers retreated into the woods, leaving behind smoke and the quiet crackle of burning brush.

A shadow fell across my window. Asher and Alpha Rowan rode alongside the carriage, their horses stepping carefully over the scorched ground. Faint embers still glowed along Asher's sword.

He glanced through the curtain, his eyes meeting mine for a brief moment. His gaze lingered on the fading mark on my cheek, but he didn't say anything.

Neither did I.

ISABELThe pack members turned. Asher stood several feet away, his expression cold as his gaze settled on his sister, before he began walking toward us with measured steps."She is my responsibility now." he said, his voice flat, giving away nothing of what he was thinking or feeling. There was no warmth in his tone, no anger either, only the detached certainty of a man stating a fact he had already accepted. His expression remained unreadable as he looked at his sister, making it impossible for me to tell whether he was defending me out of duty or because he genuinely cared. His sister's jaw tightened. "Your responsibility?""Yes.""She is a Rivercrest." She said sharply."She was."Asher stopped beside me, his towering presence immediately changing the atmosphere around us. "The moment Isabel stepped across the Fireclaw border, she became part of this pack's household," he said. "She is no longer an enemy standing on the other side of our walls, and I will not allow anyone under

ISABELDid he just call me his wife?I stood beside the carriage for a moment, watching the attendant hurry toward the eastern wing as Asher's words repeated themselves in my mind. She is my wife. I sighed softly, wondering if he had even realized what had slipped from his mouth, because perhaps he had only said it to make me feel welcome in a place where I knew no one.Either way, I wasn't going to mistake one small gesture for acceptance. One of the young omega servants eventually approached me, lowering her head respectfully before gesturing toward the entrance."My lady, the chambers have been prepared, and if you require anything, you only need to tell us." I gave her a small smile and shook my head, quietly declining her offer because I didn't know what I could possibly ask for when I had spent my entire life learning not to ask anyone for anything.I followed her inside, my eyes moving over the enormous hall as we entered. Fireclaw's pack house was nothing like Rivercrest, with

ASHERThe last of the attackers vanished into the thick undergrowth, leaving behind the hiss of dying flames and the uneasy snorts of frightened horses.Smoke drifted low through the towering pines, carrying the bitter scent of fresh blood. I stayed high in my saddle, keeping my horse steady while my eyes scanned the blackened clearing. My father turned toward me and gave a slight gesture."Maintain the perimeter," I commanded, my voice flat and even. The order barely left my mouth before the men moved. Half of the warriors locked into position around the convoy, while the rest fanned out into the tree line with weapons drawn, searching for any sign of a second strike.Fireclaw hadn't survived centuries of mountain warfare by celebrating too early. A retreating enemy was often nothing more than a waiting enemy. The flames wrapping around the length of my sword gradually died down, revealing the polished steel beneath."Alpha."Beta Kael dismounted and approached my father."Our losses

ASHERMy name is Asher Rowan, heir to the Fireclaw Pack, the strongest pack in the North. From the day I was old enough to understand the weight of my title, I was taught that a weak Alpha doomed his people, and a hesitant one buried them in forgotten graves. I never questioned my duty, nor did I flinch from the bloody realities of our borders. That was simply the way of our world... until my father decided I would marry the daughter of our greatest enemy. My gaze settled on the young woman standing at the edge of the courtyard.So... this was Isabel, daughter of Alpha Darius and Luna Jade. She stood quietly in a simple, unadorned blue dress, her fingers tightly clasped in front of her as though she wished she could disappear from everyone's sight. She was beautiful; there was no denying that. The rumors of Rivercrest women had spread far beyond their borders for generations, tales of beauty blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, and looking at Isabel now, I understood why those storie

ISABELSilence settled over the courtyard. For a long moment, no one spoke as I looked at Alpha Rowan, convinced I had heard him wrong. Future Luna? Me? Confused murmurs spread through the crowd."What did he just say?""Future Luna?""I thought she was being sent to Fireclaw because of the treaty.""So... she's not going there as a servant?"My mother stared at Alpha Rowan in disbelief. Father frowned, and even Vivian looked confused.Alpha Rowan glanced around the courtyard before speaking again. "I assume the details of the treaty were never shared with you." No one answered, and he continued, his voice calm. "The peace treaty between Fireclaw and Rivercrest is more than an agreement to end a war. It is an alliance."More whispers spread through the crowd."My son, Asher Rowan, heir to the Fireclaw Pack, has accepted the treaty." He turned slightly toward the young man standing beside him. Only then did I look at him again. He stood quietly beside his father, his expression unreada
